So I went and beat the entire game but I had nooo idea where to go to get the dragon scale that you get from killing the dragon near andraste's ashes forged into something useful. Is the scale even worth forging into anything? Does it give you anything worthwhile?

It gives you some of the best armor in the game. You get to pick from light, heavy, or plate armor. All of these armors have very high armor values for their type, low fatigue values, and extremely high fire resistance. The dragonskin, drakeskin, and dragonscale armors are some of the best armors for mages if you take 1 point in AW so they can equip them (very worth it.)
