While I've enjoyed the many posts celebrating female Shepards, especially this excellent Femshep Fan Thread , I never planned on making one. With limited gaming time, I figure I'll have only a few playthroughs before ME3, which I want to continue with my Shepguy.
But I kept hearing good things about Jennifer Hale's voice acting, and I learned I could switch to a
Shepgal in a game I'd already started, courtesy of Gibbed's Save Editor.

You can switch mid-career?
Yep. See the instructions for the mechanics. Note that you may need to switch a few times depending on your romance preference.
So I tried it, and she's grown on me quite a bit. I may have expected too much from the voice acting, because my new Shepard initially sounded bored to me, but now she strikes me as worldly-wise. I like it.

Tell me this isn't about the little black dress.
While my Shepgal does look great, what I like best about her is how much better the customization feels. I never did make a Shepguy head that suited me - I had better luck with DA:O there - so this is my first non-standard Shepard, and it gives me a different take on the game. Plus, she's a badass:

Hmmm. Is there more to this than looks?
Absolutely! The game feels fresh, there are different dialog options even for minor encounters, and you can be far more relaxed about your body language:

I can't believe you put that in there! You are such a boy!
The appeal really is about more than looks! NPC comments reflect the composition of your groups. One was highly disrespectful of my 'girls,' with a comment totally absent when playing a Shepguy:

The whole experience is fun. I find myself listening more carefully to all dialog, seeing how much of the galaxy reacts to gender. There is more, isn't there?

You won't get secrets from me.
Some things you just have to try. Now I like my gal so much, I kinda expect to see her in ME3. She's sure not going away quietly.
