(Maybe this is all head canon though.)
The other way to look at it is that in the 3 years between Acts 1 and 2, Hawke is busy getting her life in order -acquiring the estate, moving out of Lowtown, etc. She might be difficult to pin down.

Isabela was also quite busy searching for leads regarding her missing 'relic' so she might have been gone a lot.

This is what I presume.

Plus, Isabela was probably searching for clues to the relic the whole time.
And annoying Aveline.

I could see christening the canopied bed and all, but that implies that if they were having sex prior to act 2, at no point did Hawke start to ask some questions about matters of love. And this may be back to the dueling head cannons, but most of my Hawkes would have wanted to get to know the person they were rolling on the straw mattress with.jlb524 wrote...
Some headcanon it that they did sleep together (and the scene you see at the estate was just their first time at the estate). ^^ like Mr. House (just saw this post)

Unless of course the key word here is "love", from that post-coital on-screen conversation - that it's only after several pleasurable evenings that Hawke gets up the nerve to approach her own feelings from an angle, and thus the act 2 romp is not about the sex being the first, but about the conversation.

Yeah, that interpretation depends on Hawke. If Hawke pulls a 'Merrill' and blurts out 'I love you' right after you have sex for the first time... nah...wouldn't work.

- They were already sleeping together during those 3 years
- Hawke and/or Isabela was playing hard to get
- They had been flirting with each other constantly, but stayed friends. I have a friendship with a girl that is like this. We're both flirty by nature and we've known each other for years (and indeed we flirted with one another when we first met) but nothing's ever really come of it. Though I can't really speak for what the future holds.
Me? I'm inclined to believe the third one.

So now I want Varric to narrate all 3 scenarios, but to make the first one extra saucy, just for Mr. House's sake.Mr.House wrote...

I can just see Hawke having hot, raunchy angry sex with Isabela to get rid of all that anger from what happened to the sibling

Why wouldn't she go for both?
*not at the same time, of course*

Yes
Edit:
It's why Bethany accidently calls her "Bela" once.

The great Kirkwall cheese shortage of course. Practically all romances were on hold in the Free Marches because of a catastrophic lack of cheese wheels.
Sheesh.
I don't even know how people would have sex without a cheese wheel.

From the contextual clues in the dialogue, this is what I know happened:
1. Isabela was visiting Hawke's Estate for the first time when they knock boots on camera ("So this is where you live. Not bad.")
2. It is apparently the first time that Hawke's brought up feelings (hence the conversation)
It's entirely possible that they had been sampling each others' sushi before then, and it was only when Hawke had finally settled into her new home that she thought it would be a good time to bring up the feelings. It's also entirely reasonable that the two had been busy, just friends, or possibly just too busy up to that point. I've had relationships with folks I knew for a while, but never got into until the right set of circumstances.
In the fanfic I wrote, it was the first time the two got together, because Isabela's primary focus was still the relic and she had other lovers in the meantime. Circumstances pushed her toward Hawke while she searched for the relic, she followed them, and then ended up in a relationship that evolved far past their initial 'friends with benefits' relationship.
