I agree that on my first playthrough right now it isn't brutal, but parts can be initially if too low of a level. I'm smart enough not to waste time and resources too much and, move on, jotting down the location and a description as a note for future preparation so I don't miss any fun, pathway connections, souls, loot drops or pickups.

I'm playing as a Pyromancer with zero armor so I can keep my mobility, but I haven't hardly leveled Intelligence at all. Or Attunement...no need to yet. I also try and maintain a steady supply of firebombs at my early level. I backtrack as far as necessary to get them sometimes, especially in Darkroot they're handy and easier to throw without getting hit by whipping branches.

The way I'm playing I have no problem grinding when necessary for souls. Many times I'll advance so far with lots of souls, and when I get too low on flasks or I feel content I made good progress and now possess lots of souls, I'll return to the nearest bonfire, then set out on mini expeditions to farm and level before progressing. Not all the time, but most or the time that's what I do.

I'd have to look to see if there are official stats, but at level 24 and 15 or so hours in I've probably died close to 100 times.

*edit...eh...120 may be too high...100 may be closer.

Pyromancer, eh? I tried that out but wasn't overly fond of it - I've been playing a Holy Paladin. It's been a sturdy and intuitive build so far, perfectly suited to the sword and shield playstyle I like to use in these types of games (what can I say? Zelda games have spoiled me) with some miracles thrown in for good measure.

Also, with Havel, I used a cheap tactic by luring him up to the top of the tower and hanging around the door leading back out to Undead Burg - he won't come outside and start retreating back down the tower when you step outside, but come back to attack you when you step back into the tower. It's easy to exploit that to where you can continuously land blows on him while more easily dodging his one hitter quitter attacks.

Lol one hitter quitter :P.

I want to get that Knight at the top of that tower, first. I have a plan on how to get him...and I just thought of it right now while typing. I'm gonna lure him to the gate near the church AMD try and close that sucker on top of him.

I remember my first time exploring the area. I went under the bridge where the dragon is and went past the rats, up the ladder.

'Oh cool, a winding stair up. Wonder what's up here!'

20 seconds later: respawn at my local bonfire, shaking my head

The tower Knight is definitely tougher than the one in the Undead Burg - I beat the first one by luring him into a fairly open space and dueled him. There doesn't seem to be such an area outside of that tower, though, and that two-handed sword he wields is a beast of a weapon.

Yeah definitely. Fighting in that narrow hall is suicide, especially because he jabs at you intelligently every time you try to flask, but I ended up luring him out, too. Firebombed him until I was stunned my stamina could withstand his full swings, just had to manage my stamina closely, releasing block so it could recharge faster and getting my shield back up in time. Had to have been a level 40+ enemy.

Gonna play a lot tonight. Can't wait :)

Made a lot of progress. Beat the Moonlight Butterfly and finally that a-hole, Capra Demon. I died 15-20 times against it...I used to get slashed immediately, lose 2/3 of my health, then lose the remainder, with poison and massive blood loss, to those damned poison dogs. Finally beat him. Then went to the Depths.

I have never in gaming felt so immersed in any environment or atmosphere as the dark, filthy, wet, rotten, deadly and dangerous Depths. Got cursed twice, didn't know it stacks and had 1/4 health...had to spend a lot of souls to get rid of it. I got pretty far then. That rotten pit of filth and death and danger is spectacular. Having an absolute blast, and with imminent death anywhere at anytime, its absolutely spectacular.
