I know. I do it to see him die later in that cutscene with the door.

Then don't fight the Collectors when Garrus is shuffling down the tube. Run around them or incapacitate them somehow as you're running through so that you can stay ahead of Garrus.

I wouldn't get too worked up about story rumors until you hear that sort of thing from BioWare. There'll be a ton of speculating about characters, romances, plots, etc between now and launch. Read all of it, but take it with a grain of salt until you hear any such rumor confirmed by BioWare.
