Malcolm says "I may have left the Circle but I swore an oath......."
Was this his own personal promise to himself or was it an oath he swore to the Templar Carver?
Or is it an oath that mages who are permitted to depart from the Circle are required to make before they do so?   So Templar Carver just made Malcolm swear something that was already established practice.
I don't feel that the Mage Warden is relevant since it would probably be assumed that the Warden's Oath would supercede any other oath anyway.

"My magic will serve that which is best in me, not that which is most base".   This shows that it is the mage who controls the magic, not the other way around - "magic was made to serve man, never to rule to over him."  It also seems to suggest that it is the intent of the mage which determines the nature of the magic, which is in keeping with the Chant of Light.  It seems like the sort of oath that Andraste might have used with her followers, or even sworn herself if she was a mage, but is not in keeping with the sort of sentiments expressed by Meredith, Cullen and even Greigore that magic is a curse and what the Templars, certainly those high in the order, seem to believe.

Any thoughts on the matter?

About the oath your guess is as good as mine, but i think it's a personal oath, or perhaps one given for his love of Leandra.

Last part i agree with, it always seemed to me that all mages could choose how they would use their magic and not that it is juat a timed bomb ready for impact.
