Just wanna thank anyone who takes their time to help out in advance. This is ruining my experience of an otherwise excellent game. I fear I will forget to save one day and have to redo a difficult part of the game.

Running Steam downloaded ME2.

MassEffect2.EXE: 1.02
Launcher.EXE: 1.01
Config.EXE: 1.03

AMD Phenom™ II X6 1075T Processor: 3003 MHz clock
6.00 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
1.00 GB VRAM
Video card driver: (blank)

Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Sound card driver: 6.0.1.5983

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
DirectX 10.0  (Mar2009) or later

Problem:

Happens once in a while.... most of the time while in combat or otherwise, using the squad command HUD screen (default = left shift key) works fine. Occasionally, it will crash the game. My computer is absolutely fine during this period, and even Windows says that Mass Effect 2 had a problem, not Windows itself.

Started occuring.... ?

Downloaded all the free DLCs as soon as I installed it. Started playing subsequently after that, and the problem occured sometimes. It has happened in the prologue of the Cerberus facility after I just restarted my computer and even after playing for a while.

Where it occurs

Anywhere. It only happens while I'm in combat though (So far)

Replication

Run up to and see bad guy while in combat state. Hold left shift to bring up powers/commands HUD in order to make squadmate to use a power or to assess the situation. Game freezes. Happens whether or not a power is used. Sometimes the mouse cursor is still controllable and visible, with no sound or video (game is frozen) but can't access game menu with Esc key. Must use ctrl alt del to close game.

Game modifications

Problem occured before any modifications were made, and still occurs afterwards.

Using notepad++:
Modified mouse settings in coalesced.ini (game still starts though, obviously) as well as doubleclicktime (only removed zeros)
Changed filenames of intro movies so that game skips right to "Press any key" screen upon startup
Max anistrophic filtering: set to 8x in Config

ME1 save file was imported through config file, but not altered in any way.

if more info is needed on the mouse settings, or otherwise let me know. I did a whole bunch of them and it might take a while.... not sure if they really matter. The graphics card driver version doesn't show up for some reason, so I'm downloading that now and will try to check back in.

Retail or download? It might sound completely dumb but in the case of a downloaded version did you try verifying files? Or with retail reinstalling? (You won't lose your saves but will have to reinstall the DLC as well) It sounds a lot like a missing file related to the HUD that's triggering the crash sometimes the easiest solutions are the best ones and reinstalling can solve it completely.

The only crash I have heard of close to this is if you try to move a squad power too or around the hotbar after the beginning of a mission. It will crash the system and even choose the wrong power if you are trying to drag one around.

Use your search under the start to search RELIABILITY and bring up the reliability manager, to see if it lists any more crash info or module other than just ME has an issue. You may also try reducing your core affinity to 2 and see if it helps the stability of the game.

One other thing I would suggest doing, is going to the Realtek website, and downloading the latest driver for your audio device. The driver that is included with Win7 is as buggy as hell, and causes all sorts of problems.
It could be something as simple as that "DUNH" sound that gets made bringing up the HUD thats causing the crash.
