To start I have played through both ME1 and ME2 as a male and female Shepard.  In ME1 I just felt that FemShep worked far better then Male Shep.  However in ME2 something just felt off playing as FemShep.  I can't really point out anything specific.  I just got the feeling in ME2 I was playing a game designed to be played as male shep.  I know this might sound crazy but it was disappointing that my own personal "cannon" FemShep seemed like the inferior playthrough this time.  I'm hoping that Bioware can somehow find the spark again that made FemShep so fun in ME1 in ME3.
Ok I said it was a rant heh.

What you were feeling was a cocktail of "nostalgia" and "unfulfilled expectations".

Maybe it's the male animations?

Because the game was meant to be played by canon!Shep (John).

99% of the animations are gender neutral... except they aren't. They are designed for male shepard. Fem!shep will clip through people when hugging them, walk like she has a boner, etc etc

Interesting. I'm happy that there are never any clipping problems with male Shepard... oh wait.

Valid rant. Dont worry, many of us feel the same way.

The animations and many situations were just straight ports from maleshep with little to no alterations. The care and attention that I felt was evident in ME1 was lacking in ME2. For example more clipping issues and lower quality textures compared to maleshep.

Since Bioware have marketed her now for ME3 I am optimistic more care will be given to her this time round though.

The VA performance was way better in 1 then 2. Same VA but she sounded too butchy in 2.

I felt that ME2 was much more conducive to a renegade playthrough, not necessarily tied to Shepard's gender. There were so many awesome renegade interrupts, and I do think that Mark Meer's VA was vastly improved in ME2. (Before anyone gets their panties in a wad, Meer was fine in ME1. He was just better to me in ME2, or the script was better, or whatever.)

The little black dress femshep gets in ME 2 shows everything that is wrong with the model...

Walks around looking like a cowboy ready to draw six-guns, feet are too wide apart, and otherwise there are the same male gestures, same male model dance, etc.

Some could be attributed to her being an Alliance soldier, but that cannot account for all the niggling little details mark the differences between men and women and almost completely ignored.

I don't want my femshep to a dainty wallflower or anything. Take Saamara, for example; she is strong and capable and yet maintains her femininity.

I hope this is corrected in ME 3 by replacing the femshep animations with distinctly female differences. Think something like CIA Agent Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) in "Chuck" (but less 'sexy').

Yeah, BW may claim gender neutrality, but what that really means is that the part was (mostly) written for broShep.  Part of it is the animations, but then both Shepards walk like a Gorilla. While ME1 was all about the discovery of a new universe as well as the main character in ME2 Shepard almost gets seems to get lost in the shuffle. Add to that that ME2 is more of a shooter and therefore either by accident or design, Shepard became more of a "badass." Finally, it may boil down to more than just femShep.  The dialogue in ME1 was very different than in ME2. There was more exploration in the dialogue, trying to get to the root of a problem.  In ME2 it's more "tell me what I need to know and let's go."  However, there is a split on this w/in the femShep community as many actually like the "gender neutrality." They like the walk, the open legs, the badassery and everything in between.  To each his (or her) own.  In the end, I think Crash has more optimism than I do for ME3.  I know Shepard is supposed to be more human in ME3, but I'll believe it when I see it. And I don't expect the animations to change either.  I just hope they don't get worse.

But not every scene in the game is broShep specific.  Every Shepard gets the "I want you Jacob" glare.  :P

Yup.

ME3 will probably be more of the same.

Interestingly enough, though, it does half solve the problem with femshep being too thin in her other attire. In the dress, femshep is clearly a pretty athletic + muscular woman. In her other clothes, she's pretty darn skinny.

*not negating your points or anything. Just pointing out an funny aside that has been brought up, namely that femShep is too thin*

Although, I also noticed muscle inconsistency with other casual outfits as well...

I vote for whoever captures Aria to also do femShep. Or maybe we could get someone like Meryl from MGS?

I'd also like to point out that ME2 is definitely meant to be defaulted by mShep -- and not just with big things like animations. Legion and Liara, for instance, have mShep armor pieces that they keep. That was really disappointing to me as a femshep fan.

Someone should tweet Casey and ask if they could possibly change that stuff.

I agree it could have been done a little better and given her some more feminine gestures but overall I'm fine with her.

I never thought that ME1 or ME2 were "designed" to be played as either gender. It's an unfortunate truth that they probably care more about male Shepard ultimately, but I never felt that a female Shepard playthrough was "inferior" to a male Shepard one.

I disagree. There are unique dialogue choices for each Shep and I think while the animations could be better IMO they are done well. I have no concerns about ME 3.

Hopefully this time Bioware get's there act together with Femshep. Ladyhawke felt like her own character, not some crappy port that femshep feels like to me.

Hope that their recent interest in femshep changes that. Glad Silverman isn't creative director.

If he was you would get only one map and you would visit the same place like twenty times so you don't get confused.

I dunno Mike Laidlaw got the Dragon Age franchise so I think that's proof that somone who has no good ideas can still get paid for being an idea man.

Mike Laidlaw is fine, DA however is just not the series for him. Silverman however is plain and simple, a moron with no redeming qualities and a very annoying voice.
