Careful what you ask for.
Was dating a guy quite a few years back.. he made the mistake of "telling" (rather than politely asking) me to get him a beer while he was sitting in his recliner.. in his own house.. and we'd only been dating some 2 weeks.
I didn't take it well... visited his bathroom, found some laxative tablets, dropped 2 into his beer, let him down the beer... 30 mins later he was scurrying to the bathroom. Promptly shouted to him through the bathroom door him never to call me again and left.
Damn it felt good that one time being a vindictive b!tch

Still not safe from retribution... I'd have just replaced the laxative tablets with anything else unpleasant... say a whole bottle of tobasco sauce, etc.

Thanks for making my point ... again.
Yeah, the point of the thread ... I'm replaying ME1 and Shep was written as a man in that game too, but it is a very different game. ME2 added a grittiness to the game that is reflected in every aspect from the architecture to the animations to the tone of the main characters. As for the animations, all characters suffer from this from time to time. Jacob’s pacing animations look good on him, but not so good on Samara. But aside from these animations, I do not have the same problem as the OP. Maybe ME3 will bring back that “spark” OP is missing. We’ll see in five months.

Point... Missed.
I don't believe that I was saying anything about being smarter than Bioware. What I said was that statistics, taken out of context, are meaningless and the playerbase shouldn't be trying to use said statistics as proof of their particular bias. Bioware really hasn't released their statistics in context.
What is it about the statistics that you find out of context? 18%, whether it's of 400 or of 4,000,000 is still 18%. And the 80% figure of people playing DudeShep, is most likely a combination of those who played him exclusively and those who played him a long with FemShep. The same goes for the 18% figure for FemShep.
I doubt the game's internal polling data keeps track of whether you played with one more than the other. What the game probably does is just tally every time someone rolls a DudeShep or FemShep.....and in this sense, the stats are pretty clear.
A lot more people rolled a MaleShep than a FemShep no matter what way you slice it. But thats not to say that FemShep is unviable or irrelevent..
FemShep gets a lot of attention on these forum, mostly due to her vocal fanbase, as well as the fact that she's a female character playing a stereotypically masculine role.
Characters like that always receive plenty of scrutiny, because developers have to perform a juggling act between aesthetic concerns and her credibility in whatever role she is assuming..
And sure enough, plenty of people (including FemShep zealots) have criticized Bioware's aesthetic approach to FemShep..

The only thing that can really be surmized from the 80% having played as a male Shepard figure is that 20% played exclusively as a female Shepard, and that some unknown quantity of the 80% may have also played as femshep.
I don't believe that anyone is arguing against the fact that there are more players who prefer dudeshep. Only that the number of femshep players, while seemingly low given some statistics quoted out of context, are non-the-less significant.

18% of 400 is 72. 18% of 4,000,000 is 720,000. Both figures are still based on 18%, but there's a marked difference in the impact that 720,000 people have on the bottom line of any given game. I'm sure some game companies would LOVE to have 720,000 people purchase their game at all.
Perhaps I'm looking at it from a purely percentage based perspective, because 18% is just 18% to me. You can quote 720,000 FemShep players, but I can quote 3,200,000 DudeShep players if you want to look at from a who's got the most numbers point of view.
The only thing that can really be surmized from the 80% having played as a male Shepard figure is that 20% played exclusively as a female Shepard, and that some unknown quantity of the 80% may have also played as femshep.
Why would the polling data concentrate on FemShep specifically, but not DudeShep when it comes to exclusivity? That doesn't make much sense at all to me..
The internal data gathering mechanism isn't going to be sophisticated or exact like a good political poll, because it doesn't need to be. It's just a way to help Bioware gain some useful information about how it's games are being played.
Thats why I think it's more likely that the game just tracks how many times a DudeShep or FemShep character was generated and then Bioware extrapolates from there, rather than whether someone played FemShep or DudeShep exclusively or perhaps both..

Well, when discussing playthroughs, things get a lot murkier, because we don't know whether Bioware based their DudeShep/FemShep statistics on completed playthroughs, or merely character generation.
For example, I played the default MaleShep almost exclusively, and I finished the game once with that character to completion.
I also rolled a FemShep once, but I did not complete the game with her. So does Bioware still take into account my short stint as FemShep?
There's no way to know unless a Bioware rep steps in and tells us, so I suppose this debate is pointless to continue in light of this.

99% of the animations are gender neutral... except they aren't. They are designed for male shepard. Fem!shep will clip through people when hugging them, walk like she has a boner, etc etc
Technically, canon Shepard would be whichever Shepard you've created. The developers just didn't have the foresight to keep things more gender neutral instead of defaulting to male Shepard.
