Hey fellow steam consumers,
This is my first preload, is there a specific time that the game starts? Do I need to initiate anything?

Thanks

You'll need to start it manually. When it will start is just "sometime" tomorrow. I'd expect it to be later in the day on West Coast time. Remember that they (and at least the rest of the US except Arizona) set their clocks back an hour tonight.

The pre-load will start "when it's ready". Borderlands, clocking in at 7GB took about three hours to pre-load, so it's safe to say that for me it'd take maybe eight for Dragon Age. That said though, it really doesn't matter so much, just start it when you notice it.

lol ya shoud'int take more then a day for anyone to pre load plus you still have to wait til the nov 3 to actually enjoy this amazing game lol i heard that D2D will be able to Pre load 10am pst time but that's a rumor i haven't seen it anywere on my pre order stating that i coud pre load at that time so i figure steam shoud'int be that off time wise from D2D....unless everything i just said is a lieyers rumor lol

Update: Huh i just check't up on D2D just to double check there actually a running timer til Pre load says in 12 hrs il be able to Pre load so figure steam shoud be about the same

Because the money's already spent for pre-loads, there isn't really any incentive for ValvE to get the pre-loads going before D2D. They both release on the same day, though knowing ValvE, it'll get released around 1PM PST.

I just checked D2D and preload starts at 10am

Posted ImageGreat News! Direct2Drive is proud to provide you our Preload Service to your Dragon Age preorder purchase.  That’s right, on Sunday November 1st  10AM
(48hrs prior to launch) ,you will be able to preload your Dragon Age
file and not have to wait to download your file on launch day, November 3rd  10AM.

Can I ask someone what exactly a pre load is? Does it mean you are able to download it prior to it's release, but not play it? Sorry, I am not so savvy with Steam.

That would be the short version.

you can play once you preload but for certain DLC they may not be available til the 3rd.

Very incorrect.

Preload will not let you play until launch date / time Nov 3rd 10am i believe.

But you have 2 days to download the 16 gigs so you will be ready that very minute

No, no..

With Steam, the way pre-loads work is you get a copy of the game with the executables encrypted (to prevent it from being run early). More likely than not, keys won't be assigned until the day-of either, so you wouldn't be able to apply any pre-order or deluxe keys.

The idea is that for those with slower connections, and connected to busy content servers, all the actual needed bandwidth spread out to make the impact less severe.

Once the game is released, Steam supposedly decrypts the files, and checks for any day-zero patches. At that point, you're good to go with a fresh, decrypted copy of the game.

The better your CPU, the faster you decrypt, and even then it's faster than downloading too. (Eight minutes for Borderlands Decryption versus a three hour download time.)

Preload will not let you play until launch date / time Nov 3rd 10am i believe

Don't expect the game to be released at 10AM.  I've seen a lot of releases on Steam, and most of the time (if they aren't delayed for technical reasons) they end up getting opened at 1PM PST.  Don't watch the timer, it won't help.

@ Taleroth so then your saying even though you pay extra for the pre order you still cant begin playing until the 3rd.............considering a number of 360 units are already playing as of this moment i will stick by the email I got from D2D and plan to play sunday.

Of course steam appears to be different but then that would be steam users loss.

We never use to move our clocks either. Until we got some moron in office that said "DST means less crime, better grades in school and creates jobs" .. .. wait, WHAT??

Each time zone should be on hour apart and everyone leave their *** clock alone.

You paid extra for what?  The extra for the deluxe edition is that you are paying for the deluxe edition.  Even then, if you are able to play DAO before the 3rd, it'd be the same as retail stores breaking the street date.

You don't pay extra for pre-order.  You just pay in advance.
Pre-load is universal in that you're only loading early.  It's "pre-load," not "play early."  Your D2D e-mail didn't say you could play tomorrow, it only says you can pre-load.

It won't let you play sunday read this

Q. What is pre-load?

A. Preload is a Direct2Drive exclusive service that allows you to download your game in “pre-order” status in anticipation of installing it on Day 1 of release. Be ready! Your file will be saved on your hard drive after downloading with our Download Manager or Comrade and it will unlock when the game is released.

The stores broke the street date agreements they had with EA. This is somehwta difficult to trace and results in relatively few early players. If D2D allowed you to play once you're preloaded, EA would throw a fit; D2D would be breaking the release date restriction with every single D2D customer.

I gurantee it will not let you play until Tuesday. Consider this; why do the call it pre-loading rather than just loading or downloading? Why not just tell customers they can play early? Furthermore, I'd read your email from D2D carefully; there's some misleading boilerplate that suggests you'll be able to download and play immediately, but it should say either on the game page itself or in the email that DA:O will not be playable until the third.

@ FreyarS then can you explain how the 360 consoles are already up and playing. Arent they breaking the street date by doing so? Guess I will know for sure later today. If I do download and am able to start playing I will re-post here or message you and let you know, I will also let yhou know if I cant.

Yes; stores have broken the release date either knowingly or due to local store worker negligence.
