ooo, zombies in Neverwinter. I may give it a try if my internet connection is up to it, since it's called Neverwinter and I've never played one of those MMO thingies.

I think rumors of our death are greatly exaggerated. What Dorateen said.

Let me rephrase that, have all expansions for both NWN and NWN2 and love them both to death with all the support of the modding community and persistent worlds and have been playing them both from day 1, but I think with the latest installment, from a hardcore RP player, this is going to be a disaster.

I thought that's what you meant. I don't know, NWN2 pretty much spreads by word of mouth these days, to the extent it spreads at all. Perhaps people will play this new game, start thinking about where they heard that name before, find the game, the Vault, the forums...who knows. It's certainly no skin off our arse if it does well and it might even help.

Like i said before, lets wait and see. It was the game to end all games, then it's dead.

Still got a year of flip flopping, whatever they describe it as, is likely whatever group they are trying to convince to come buy the game. From what i've seen the description of games by the marketers pre-release have almost nothing to do with what is released.

Frankly if it is to succeed NWN2, it would mean us loyal nwn players invade their servers like pirates and take it over, fix their bugs, rewrite their spell scripts, hellfire redoes their models, kaedrin redoes their classes, and pw admins are allowed to create their own kingdoms, with their own rules catering to roleplay, pvp, action, party play, dm'd adventures ( in a way that allows us to not have to play with those evil others who don't play like we do ), and based on their own histories.

Not likely, but it's likely going to be worth how much they are charging for it, to hop in and see what it's like.

There is a thread somewhere in the Not-So-Long-Ago where I opined that this is pretty much the way the game would go -- if it were going to actually make it out the gate. I still have a wait and see attitude, but so far, the morphology of the game's devleopment and hype indicates that this will still be something that I more than likely won't enjoy as much as they think I should.
And I agree with Dorateen,
Harrumph! Indeed.

Well NWN2 will remain alone in its field for a long time it seems.

Wow, I'm kind of amazed to see them switching so whole-heartedly to the free-to-play model. That's interesting.

Incidentally, I am all for invading like pirates, but like true pirates we should simply steal their people and then leave! This is the BioWare Buccaneer Alliance, after all. Arrrr!

I hope this is not Neverwinter III. Look what happened to Final Fantasy XI and XIV. I hope this is just like a spinoff of sorts. 'Coz if not, they'll be sullying the NW franchise.

I think if people on this forum can agree on nothing else, it's that there will be no NWN3. I hope I'm wrong, but the future of this game is in the community and the modders. I hope some legal way can be found to pay them for their work. I'll be the first to get my credit card out, because they have given me far more entertainment than the official products.

Hi to all,

I don't understand how this can be a surprise; it reminds me those days when people still believed that dragon age would have multiplayer, persistent world support, etc..

Why is people granting so many features to a game when its own developers are obviously denying them? Bioware clearly stated that dragon age wouldn't support multiplayer and Cryptic (before whatever company owned them now) clearly showed that the Forge is the same one that exists in other games they own and, of course, don't have any kind of resemblance with persistent worlds?

We are so lucky to have NWN2 and be able to create more thing than the previous version... The day its replacement come ALL of us will know it and will shift to it; meanwhile, if all those persons creating free and unrealistic hype for games and companies would spend their time learning to do things with NWN2 we all would benefit from the present and real world,

nothing stops a modder to integrate a donate button at their blogs. this way the community can choose how much the work is worth to them ;)

Hey MachinSin,

Some of us were accepting that Neverwinter would not be NWN3 but that it was going to offer a different D&D experience that would still be D&D at its heart. That was essentially the 5 player party co-ops who went of alone together to adventure through a module. But just yesterday, Cryptic, who had been pushing the Co-Op side of the game and was ready to deliver such a game had their new owners, Persistent World, change the focus to massive multiplayer instead. So now Neverwinter will need to carve up the Dungeons and Dragons Online market and not offer anything uniquely D&D, co-op, or party focused.  Instead it looks like it will be about raids and who knows, maybe PvP. This is where the disappointment from many of us lies.

Aw, that's a shame, I was almost starting to look forward to it.

On the silver lining side, at least now there's a chance I'll finish remaking Oasis of the White Palm, and maybe even Lost tomb of Martek.....

Cly.

Even for the most greedy, I think the free to play model is the safe bet. Too many games on the horizon won't be charging subscription fees.

Ooh. Neverwinter press gangs. I approve.

In reply to the original post:

Yeah, this is not exactly "news". Been following this parody on the "Neverwinter" boards. Perfect World is a nightmare for me even more so than Cryptic. Childish shoot-em-up-fantasy-MMO --- here we come...yet another one that is....

Oh....you all do know that the F2P thingie is a scam most of the times right?

Free to Play = Not Free to Advance at a Rate Commensurate With Your Actual Experience, but on the Power of Your Wallet. LotRO does this by making you buy (with real money) certain gear, horses, places to adventure, etc. It's a fair cup, on the whole. Us cheap bastids who aren't willing to fork out the kwan get to play in a sort of "kiddie" pool experience and if we really want the "Adult Swim" we have to queue up and pay our admission fees. In this case it's an admission that we like what we're playing enough to pay for more of it.

You know, if this whole idea catches on, maybe amusement parks will offer up a small area in the front of the park with like, four kiddie rides, a couple of nicer ones (you know, like one of their older rides that's been replaced inside with a much newer experience) and then you pay to go inside, but only a nominal fee. Then, when you have done that part of the Park, you pay another fee to get into another portion. If you pay up front for the whole experience, it's cheaper than the series of transactions and maybe you get a free gear locker for the day?

Hey, you know, that's not sounding half bad. I could take the grandkids to the free part and they'd most likely be pretty happy with that and I could still entertain while being a typically cheap bastid like I have been most of my life. Win win win.

It could happen.

To be fair, the early information from Bioware stated very clearly that there would be multiplayer.  Look at this archive from December 2004 from Bioware's FAQ:

http://web.archive.o.../faq/index.html

1.05: Will Dragon Age have a multi-player component?
Dragon Age will have a fully developed multi-player campaign that follows the same core story as the single-player campaign, but which is optimized for cooperative play. Some competitive play modes will also be available. More information on multiplayer will be made available later in the development cycle.

and also

1.13: Will Dragon Age have a Game Master client?
Dragon Age will have a Game Master client. More information on the specific features will be made available at a later date.

So people didn't just "grant" the features to the game out of wishful thinking.  After seeing confirmation like that, it would surely be difficult to believe any subsequent statements that it wouldn't have multiplayer.  At the very least hope springs eternal.

Often but not always. Guild Wars, for example, has a pretty good business model. Yes, there is a store where you spend real money but the things you are buying are mostly cosmetic and in no way effect how far you can get in the game.

Sadly, I have little faith that the business model for Neverwinter will be anything more than a moneygrab. I will wait and see though.
