Are there any "Elder Scrolls-like" open world games that offer a coop option.

I guess what I mean by this is does anyone know of an open world game that is coop that is sort of like Skyrim where you can play with a friend. I know Borderlands is coop and all but it's a shooter. I'm aware that LoTR: War in the North is coming out (I have high hopes for it) but I'm not sure that is open world.

Furthermore does anyone know why something like that hasn't been made before? The Elder Scrolls games are great but sometimes they can seem rather overwhelming and honestly I like doing stuff with my friends. As amazing as Skyrim is I think I'd enjoy something like it more with a friend.

Thoughts, Opinions, Suggestions would be great Image IPB

Hmmm.....I guess I should mention that I'm talking about offline coop.

Secondly, I played WoW until level 80 and I have no intention of going back to MMOs. I'm looking for an open world console game like Elder Scrolls, just with Coop.

WOW. Basically any MMORPG. :D

That's why I see no point in turning our single player RPG's into multi-player. There's already a slew of games out there for that.

MMO's have a million other ppl runing around though. lol. That's alot different than playing a co-op game with a few friends (or a friend)

I think the ES games would lend themselves to co-op play quite nicely.

OP, i know you listed action rpgs, but NWN 1/2 are great games for partying up with a few friends, or a friend and going out adventuring. Plus there's all different types of modules at the vault, anything from more combat orientated ones, to more story driven stuff.

Borderlands come to mind. But it's not like Elder Scrolls were you can be a mage or rogue.

I would guess a game where i single playthrough last about 200 hours isn't a good candidate for a coop. You should give Dead Island a try. It is not a real rpg but at least you got different skill trees and classes. The combat is mostly melee.

Borderlands 2 is open world but I have no idea when it's out.

The NWN games might not be sandbox games, but at least they're not extremely repetitive like these other co-op rpgs ppl are suggesting.

I would disagree with this on the basis that they don't have to make the game specifically for coop. In essence, they don't need to make every (or any) quest or the story coop based. It seems like all they would have to do is
1. make the difficulty harder (which you can already do in the Elder Scrolls on your own terms) and 2. Allow both people to get the quests if one person gets ahead or whatever.

I see it in a sense as two people exploring the world on their own terms in whatever order they please (in split screen) but with the ability to work together if they so choose.

Whenever I play an Elder Scrolls game I enjoy it immensly but playing the game on your own for 200 hours gets mildly depressing IMO.

Does Dead Island have local coop/multiplayer? I was under the impression it was just online.

@Underoath

I've just had an idea:

When you don't mind fancy graphics you (and your friend) should try out Baldur's Gate I+II. Both have coop. Basicly you could make 6 custom characters or make one for yourself and one for your friend. The game is so cheap it feels like stealing. You can find it at gog.com. It works on Windows7. And you have a full rpg experience.

I think Two Worlds II has it. But Two Worlds is the poor man's TES.

It's only online.

Dark Souls?

It's not exactly the same thing, but it's got an open world. Though unless you mean with areas as wide as Skyrim because there's not many open spaces from what I've seen.

Please. The online component is a different beast.

Two Worlds 2 does have an online multiplayer component, but it's limited to around 8 maps. I believe that with the latest expansion (pirates) that it may include 2 additional maps, but that's about it. There's really no story/campaign involved in it; it's more or less just parts from the solo campaign, that you can do with friends or strangers. That said, it's a lot of fun. I just wish they would expand it.

Dead Island has online multiplayer and system link, but yeah, no local co-op. My husband and I both had to buy a copy to play it together, but it's been worth it. We've played it for hours/days, and still have a lot of the campaign left to go.

Borderlands 2 doesn't come out until 9/1/2012. :( Borderlands was awesome.

You said you're looking for console games, right? Here's another thread that has some suggestions that might help you.

These are some I recommended in that thread (all of which I've played myself):

PS3:
Portal 2
Lost Planet 2
Resistance 1 and 3 (OMG, I can't believe I forgot this - one of the best co-op games EVER)
Little Big Planet 1 and 2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

XBox 360:
Gears of War 1-3
Resident Evil 5
Dead Island (no offline co-op, but you can do system link)
Fist of the North Star
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2

If you have a PS2 or old school xbox (pre-360), I can also offer up some older titles.

Saint's Row 2... and the upcoming Saint's Row The Third. Supposed to have RPG elements and strong co-op.
