Squad mate deaths do not equal a sad ending.

That all depends on who, depending on who each one of us favors.

No it doesn't.

If the great civilizations of the galaxy are saved and live on in a golden age of peace and progress, that is a happy ending even if your favorite character dies somewhere along the way.

A bleak or depressing ending is one in which the Reapers either triumph, or manage to cause so much death and destruction that the civilizations of the galaxy go through a dark age that it takes them centuries to recover from.

Cheez has said it for me.

The problem here is that everyone has a different definition of "happy ending" and "good writing."

What I hope for in ME3 is that I can choose my own ending, at least after working at it for a bit.  I don't necessarily agree with being able to save everyone and defeat the reapers with NO consquences, but I should at least be in control of what sacrifices I make.  The Virmire decision is a great example of this, and this is where ME2 kind of got off track.

So, in my honest opinion, "good writing" in a rpg should still give the player a choice within any given set of circumstances, even ones where we are forced to make sacrifices.

The thing is, it can do that, but it can also make it feel cheap, very cheap, if no one near you dies.

There's another thread alive about the Normandy Crash site. People there have said (I believe) that it made them tearful. There's power, great power in death. This (emotional, well-done death) is rarely done in video games and raises the...maturity of the game (in my opinion).

I guess the battle is between the idealistic and the realistic. I personally feel I would appreciate the realistic better, but I see no problem with you appreciating the idealistic.

Edit: I WOULD certain not mind a "No One Left Behind" ending if it was truly difficult. And by "difficult" I don't mean "do everything." I only lost Mordin in ME2 (what with the weird Hold-The-Line scores) in my FIRST playthrough, so it should be something you literally have to work for.

Agree, it should be difficult, but I do hope they includ it.  It's one more replay I'll do and I'd like to see one where the whole team makes it through to the end.

I have one, maybe two ME2 games where I saved everyone.  Most of the time I send whoever I think should be capable of doing the mission, not necessarily the person BioWare has decided should do it, so most of my games I lose people.  I only have 2 game where some of the crew died.  That I won't let happen ever again.  I also don't have one where the majority of the team died but that's more because I don't send people on missions who I know can't do the job.

The first time I teared up at the crash site a little when I saw Pressley.

Garrus.

If it was unavoidable (plot death) it would certainly go a long way towards ruining the game for me and have me return it to BW with an unpleasent note.

Of course it would. If you're a female and you play Mass Effect Garrus is the most perfect guy ever and god forbid that anything happens to poor old perfect Garrus. If he dies the game is so just not worth playing because the only thing that ever mattered in the entire series was ruined. Boo F*cking hoo.

I love the predictability of Garrus fanboys and girls. I knew saying his name would get that kind of response.

Of course you're definition of happy ending is your shep and Garrus riding into the sunset. What's stupid is if you had to pick an ending where the entire galaxy is saved and goes into an age of peace and happiness with Garrus dying or have Garrus survive ME3 even if it ment the entire galaxy plunged into a dark age of war and never recovered from the reapers you'd probably still pick the ending where Garrus sucks wind for a few years longer.

Not jealousy, hatred. I have an issue with how much weight people put behind one character. It's like the god damn church of Garrus with you people. Do whatever you want but leave our sacred Garrus alone. "If you touch him I swear to god Bioware!" You'll what? Cry cause they killed off your favorite character? Grow up. Every one of my favorite characters in movies/books/games dies. Just cause your favorite character dies doesn't mean it's the end of the world. Plus that rumor has a 99.99% chance of being false that Garrus is boned in ME3.

Dude, chill the f*ck out.  My favorite character pretty much always dies, too.  You can understand me wanting a break, right?

Look.  Hatred is not cool, not even against a bunch of fantards.  I rip on stuff like Twilight for fun, but I don't hate the people that like it.  I think they have horrible taste, but I don't exactly cringe and hiss when a friend starts gushing about how wonderful and perfect Edward is.

People should be allowed to act like overly-passionate retards about the stuff they like.  They're not hurting anyone, even though they're creepy and annoying, and they're more than willing to make fun of themselves over how ridiculous they are.  I do it all the time.

You're the one that needs to grow up, here.

I wil add my 2cents. I can see Garrus dying. He's gotten increasingly reckless over the course of the games, from abandoning C-sec to wanting to kill Dr. Heart instead of capturing him, to pissing off every major mercband on Omega, to going after Sidonis without a care other than revenge. If this trend continues he might die.

That said, this is an RPG AND Garrus is a fan-favorite, so Bioware will most likely include a way to save him. Who knows? The game's not out yet.

Now everyone, take a deep breath and relax. Opinions are all well and good, but not everyone agrees with yours mmkay? ^_^

I'm sorry that I came across as the more emotional and less mature one.  I was trying to be good-natured and relatively gentle.

You have a habit of reducing everything I say to the lowest common denominator, Kaiser :c
