"Renegade's feeling punished" often come from the fact that people or creatures they have killed doesn't show up later.....go figure.

in regards to missing content, the funny thing is I prefer the random Colonist my Paragade deals with over Shiala my Paragon deals with....Maybe it's I'm just not really taken by the Asari or more likely that I just can't shake my suspicions of Shiala.

I did indeed hate LOTR (actually only the latter two films)

And up you go in my book.

I also like some of the dialogue you get from Shiala on Ilium if you
killed the colonists.

Any chance you can upload that one to Youtube?

So, did you just hate the movies - or the books too? Or, did you not read the books?

When these discussions devolve into, 'Yeah, a RENEGADE would be mentally retarded!' or 'Psh, figures a stupid goddamned PARAGON would say something that dumb!', people have taken a morality choice from a video game and freaking superimposed it on their own egos! It's partisan bickering, but somehow even MORE stupid!

They have decided that anyone who thinks like them is awesome and everyone who doesn't is a goddamned idiot and no meaningful discussion can ever be had between the two.

@DaringMoosejaw - there is no grey morality for a decisive man I'm afraid. There is only what ought to be done - and what ought not to.

Grey morality is for the indecisive.

But I agree - there can be little accord between any two opposing mindsets.

Not in the slightest, unfortunately. I just can hardly believe rational human beings are saying these things on purpose.

Mostly just the movies, and hate might be too strong a word in my case. What I dislike most about them is how Jackson uses the Dead Men (ghost army) as a simple deus ex machina to clear the entirety of Minas Tirith in a mere 10 seconds, while they were originally just used to get the boats to get there.

@Kaiser Shepard - the books are notoriously "paragon" in their approach.

Perhaps I've misunderstood you - but your approach to the ME games seems to be distinctly that the "Renegade" options are the only viable ones. That trying to pursue anything without first being "grim dark" is utterly unbelievable and undesirable.

Not even Boromir is "grim dark" in LoTRs as he is utterly redeemed by the time of his death.

The blacks are completely black - the whites are totally white. ((sounds like a detergent commercial... or some hideous racist propoganda - ookay, moving on.))

Is it that it's science fiction - and that was fantasy?

The way the character paths are written, I don't think this will ever be possible in any conceivable way. What the renegades does flies so hard in the face of paragon ideals that it's impossible to see any logical rationale behind it, and vice versa. The only way to come to some kind of agreement is through synthesis, and that's why we have paragade and renegon.

I don't think she ever did plan that. This thread has been off-topic for the last fifteen pages, has it not? I'm too lazy to check.

Nah, what you just described is my main issue with LotR as a story, but given how pretty much was its genre's launch it's an overlookable one. Aside from that, there's not way to go back and change it now.

Still, ME is too black and white for a product of this time, as well as a prime example of unfulfilled potential (both as a game and a story). The tragic thing is that ME1 still had more shades of grey than its sequel, mainly due to Saren, despite such a simplification of things usually being a trait seen in first entries.

When one looks at ME2, there simply is too much wrong when it comes the state of things and the enemy you face, what with the status quo remaining the exact same and the Collectors being as one dimensional as you can get, them being mere filler enemies. I mean, it's obvious that the team knew what they were ultimately working toward - the final confrontation with the Reapers - just not how to get there in an elegant way. And thus we end up with mere faceless proxy-mooks, whereas the supposedly deep universe they had built could easily have supported a more complex in-galaxy conflict - such as a civil war of sorts. Something greyer, something bigger. Instead nobody believes Shepard and you're railroaded as if there's no tomorrow in a series that's supposed to be about "choice".

Not to mention building up to a war with these giant space cthulhu, only to do away with them in just one game; nothing more than 'villains of the week'. Which brings me back to the Collectors, who as a faction should've been established earlier (the off mention in Ascension doesn't count) to prevent them from feeling as such cheap filler.

In the end, as old as LotR may be now, at least you can see the skill with which the conflict was built; Saruman is established as a villain long before he 'stars' in TTT, Sauron's influence is felt long before the RotK, etc.

Hell, even Halo did this sort of stuff better, which is quite the accomplishment looking at how it didn't really set much into stone until the second game.
