the Matrix.  Neo.  Trinity.  (of course they had to go ahead and ruin it and make her randomly die anyway, but that's not the point)

its an option.  its a choice.  you don't have to take it if you think its the wrong one.  its as simple as that.

The problem is in Mass Effect they don't punish you for your choices or make a choice look like the wrong one. so the happy ending will be the "right" choice and everything else screams "You suck at this game, that's why people died."

and what other people say about the way you play your game and write your Shepard's story matters... why?

not to mention - we are NOT asking for no consequences.  heck if Balak comes back in ME3 and does something to make it more difficult on Shepard?  I'll be very happy.

all we are asking for is an option, a choice, a possibility.

slightly of topic, since DA was brought up - my personal preferred ending is Alistair as Warden. sure you still need to do the dark ritual but you stay together with no issues afterwards. no need to be a princess, just a committed couple is good. so yes, there were different options for happy ending in DAO. now imagine if you had no dark ritual as an option. someone always has to die to archdemon. THIS is what you all are asking for.

WE? we are asking for dark ritual.

The dark ritual. Don't even get me started. That's not even a choice! You're allowing the archdemon to live into some satan child you know nothing about. You've completely defeated the purpose of all that work you did all game just to cower in fear at your own death or the death of another. I don't understand how anyone with a brain can let the Archdemon survive just to live or save someone else.

That's like in ME3 you can either Sacrifice yourself, or your LI/favorite charactor/best friend to stop the Reapers once and for all. OR you can let the Reapers return to dark space so you can all live for a bit longer before f*cking up millions of other peoples lives. How selfish is that?

of course this ignores the fact  that the Arch Demons are only arch demons because they are corrupted from the darkspawn finding them.   Which i believe morrigan states that it the  uncorrupted soul  and power gets sent to baby.

Also  completely ignoring the fact that Archdemon and Darkspawn are a complete ****ing joke for start( But that my personal opinion)

And do get me Started on Giant  Talking Robotic Space Squid  Wannbe Cthulthu

A tough choice isn't when you can point at a certain path and say "Oh hey, I did it". A tough choice is when you're uncomfortable with your decision or you agree with it completely but many others do not. When there's forum arguments about choices which usually doesn't dissolve into "just do the third option", you know you've got a winner.

I hope I'm not taking this out of context, but...

This reminds me of the Zevran subplot in DA. On my first playthrough, I was nice with him, and he had pretty good approval, byut after we killed the Crow assassins, he left. I've heard he can stay, and I have absolutely no idea why he left (and if you do know don't tell me). This is what I would accept for ME3. If it's something that we truly have no idea about, then it would be alright.

I sacrificed my girl warden myself....didn't want a demon babe running around.... But it was much easier for me to sacrifice my warden, I hadn't developed a relationship witrh her as such as I have with my Shep...DA:O unlike ME takes place over a single game, not enough time to build up that love of a character, whereas Shep, we have gotten to know our Sheps over two games and coming into a third....I found it easy to sacrifice the warden, but sacrifing Shep?...No.

Many people have a much easier time connecting with Shepard.

@EternalAmbiguity: Different people respond to different stimuli. Shepard irritates me sometimes - the Warden, I can superimpose my character onto.

I was just talking about the "not enough time" line. I can certainly understand someone more easily connecting with a particular protagonist.

Well - I guess having a voice actor truncates the required time to form a bond with a protagonist. Voice acted characters mildly irritate me (not enough to experience nerd rage thank Baby Jesus)

So because your life sucks Mass Effect needs to have a "super happy, your the best person that ever lived, good job, you're a hero, nobody died that you liked" ending just to make you feel better? I'm sorry, but seriously nobodies life is perfect and you're not the only one to have sh!t hit the fan that you couldn't control and feel like crap over about. You need to learn to deal with those problems in your life and stop hidding behind games or whatever to make you feel better.

Nope, just no squad deaths/no same squaddie dies no matter what.  It's a small victory compared to everything else and it gives me warm fuzzies to save the day with my space husbando.  Or space waifu.  Or space BFF.

I actually DO deal with those problems and don't "hide behind games" to avoid real life.  But it's a fun escape, largely the same as booting up Halo to blow some heads off when so-and-so was an ass to you at the office.  Just in the opposite direction, for an emotion other than rage.

As for gaming is supposed to be escapism I don't agree with that. I don't play games to escape my life, I play them to enjoy superior story telling (vs. Movies and books) and have a good time. Which means that a game is allowed to emotionally gut punch me from time to time and I'll be fine and dandy. Shrug it off and move on. Stories aren't always going to be happy "sunshine and flowers" if you want that go back to kiddie books because this is a war story and people die in wars. You can't handle it gtfo.

Movies and books are escapism, too.  We watch and read the stories of others because it takes us out of real life for a moment on an adventure through someone else's eyes.  If you value a good story because it's immersive, you like your escapism, too.  Because ultimately, that's what immersion is--a measure of how much we can forget we're sitting at a desk in front of a monitor while we're enjoying the story.

Mass Effect presents a unique opportunity because it's both very immersive and I have partial control over the narrative.  I want to manipulate the narrative in a way to maximize my enjoyment.  Which is exactly what you want.  You just enjoy different stuff.

Oh, and since somebody brought up sacrificing the Warden: I'd totes jump into a black hole or some sh*t as Shepard if it meant saving someone else, be it my space bros or the whole galaxy.

I completely agree / share this sentiment... while I don't play Halo, I basically made this little video  a few days ago to vent my frustration after very foolishly letting a troll harass me and get under my skin ( I rewatched it a couple times and felt right as rain).... it was quite cathartic and better than bottling that anger or throwing something or screaming at the wall, etc.

I definitely empathize with popping a few heads in a video game to vent one's frustrations ^_^

I must have missed a lot of content then...got to admit I pushed the game kinda hard as the mapping wasn't something that worked for me (found it a frustration) and I didn't enjoy the combat style...though the dialog wheels and banter were brilliant....So, anyway, it ended up a hurried game for me.

And herein lies the heart of the matter IMO. ME does have the potential to satisfy (almost) everyone in the end. If BW only give both paragons and renegades an opportunity to make decisions in such a way to come up with endings that are happy or sad or something in between, no matter their moral alignment, ideally (read: if designed extremely well), everyone should be able to come to an ending they find appropriate and satisfying.
Actually, as far as the ultimate good "save them all" ending is concerned, I am sure BW will put that one in as one option.
The only people that wont be satisfied by this solution would be those who cannot see that ME is all about telling the story that they want to experience rather than a competition between storylines. It is not a challange to find the "best ending". It is about finding the best ending for you and immerse yourself in the story that leads up to it.

Eh, it's not the "best," but it's better than letting someone else die in my place.  I think the principle behind it is more important than the theatrical effect.  Basically, I'd rather protect others than protect myself, and most of my Sheps, even the renegade ones, share that trait.

Well, you know, except Shep's not a sissy afraid to donate blood BECUZ TEH NEELDES.  I am not allowed to make fun of people who are afraid of snakes and spiders because of the needles.  And the blood.  But mostly the needles.

Er, what? General consensus on here seems to be that it's easier to connect with voiceless protagonist, hence the outrage we got with DA2.

I didn't know general consensus on some little forum makes something an absolute fact that applies to everyone. That's not to say there even is general consensus.

That's an interesting thought...I hadn't considered that, could well be why Shep quickly meant much more to me than the Warden did...As I think about the games I do enjoy, it's the unvoiced protaganists I am happiest to sacrifice....opposite to the concensus, but different strokes for different folks I guess.
