is there a way to set a players faction easily by gaining or equipping an item easily?

Players are part of a "PC" faction, but you can have an invo item that NPCs check for and react to accordingly. On Shadow Mountain we broke the world down into good and evil and if you have the evil token and are in an area that is dominated by goodies the goodie NPCs will attack you, and vice versa for the goodie item in the evily part of the world.

With a bit of forethought you could expand that idea to have many variations, giving different convo nodes and such.
