What did other people find was a well balanced party for a DW rogue Hawke? And is an Archer Hawke even worth making with Varric avaible as a companion?

My most frequently used setup was Aveline and two mages.
I enjoyed playing an archer Hawke - a ranged crit machine.

I'm using Varric, Aveline and (mostly to control) Anders with my Archer without any problems.
But my most efficient party was with (damage) Beth replacing Aveline, so, if you want the best I guess you could use Merrill...

Aveline (Tank), Fenris (DPS), Anders/Merril/Bethany. The mage depends on who/how many you're going to fight.

Some of the veterans will tell you that Varric/Merrill/Anders is the best party period, regardless of Hawke's class. That only really matters if you're playing on Nightmare, though. I'd go Aveline, she can easily STAGGER for you with Claymore & Shield Bash, and unlike Fenris, she can also capitalize on your DISORIENT. Your other two should probably be ranged support. Merrill/Anders is still the power pick and offers more balance, but you could swap in either Seb or Varric or both if you like, the crowd control and AoE they can offer is quite nice.
I find Izzy a little redundant when I'm dual-wielding (she's you, but more fragile, and I find I have to micro her a fair bit), but double Lacerated Twin Fangs on a STAGGGERed target will kill anything short of a high dragon, so she's worth it if you're willing to do the work.
Fenris is about the only party member who's effectively useless to you. His DPS can't match a rogue's, his tanking can't match the Indom/Bodyguard combo, he can't proc off your DISORIENT, and post Sunder-nerf he can't even set up STAGGER any better than Aveline.
As for your second question, Hawke is better than the companions, period. You can build a better blood mage than Merrill, a better healer or nuker than Anders, a better reaver than Fenris, and yes, a better archer than Varric or Sebastian.
(Well Aveline is probably a better tank than even the tankiest warrior Hawke, but tanking is superfluous in this game, so.)

there are several considerations between nightmare and lower difficulties:
- Haste: +50% to party dps (not including spike damage)
- Friendly Fire: Warrior Talents are more likely to kill team members than enemies; mage and rogue talents and CCCs are more FF friendly.
This means that on nightmare an ideal party will almost definitely have anders and bethany for dual haste (i.e. during act 1 and legacy) while the last party member is more for flavour; Aveline can provide an extra degree of threat management/tanking/durability/staggers while an extra rogue (e.g. Varric) will give relatively more dps and help set up disorients.
Merrill makes a poor bethany substitute, but generally speaking she's the next best thing (as fenris and isabela are slightly useless)
For an archer hawke where friendly fire isn't as much of a concern, having Aveline will allow her to CCC on disoriented clusters. For DW you will probably be restricted to using shield bashes, pommel strikes and sustains.
In any case, you don't need an ideal setup for any difficulty really. For a duelist DW hawke having a warrior to feed staggers can be worth the risk of friendly fire.. (lacerate + vendetta is amazing); which obviously means she can be especially useful on lower difficulties.
On that note, I experimented with an all melee party (DW hawke, Aveline, Fenris, Isabela) which worked out quite well (the thread is somewhere lower in the page).
But given that it's not too hard to solo the game with a DW rogue it doesn't mean too much- anything will work quite well especially if you spare a thought towards party synergy.
THe only difference between an optimal party is the speed in which you can finish fights. As speed runs aren't really an important consideration, I would say that any combination of companions will work (as long as you set them up to be high dps and make their tactics less stupid). So do whatever really.

^ This. I used Aveline for tanking, Merrill for pure offense casting and Anders for backup offense casting/healing. This was pretty much my setup for the entire game. However, I swapped out Merrill with Bethany (also specced for offense casting) for the "Legacy" DLC.
For "Mark of the Assassin" I plan to continue using Aveline, Anders and Bethany.

< Varric, Archer Rogue Hawke, Aveline, and Anders. For MotA I am probably just dropping Varric since a tank and healer are a must. Aveline was basically by the end brick wall, Varric a speed shooting demon, Anders the usual healer, and me the long ranging dps/debuff/and ect.. (And of course there is my trusty hound who can off tank which always makes me grin.

My idea of a 'balanced' party for my Dual wield Duelist Rogue Hawke was more rogues. Typically Isabela, Varric and Bethany/Anders in the last slot for support.
Duelist Hawke works really well with Swashbuckler Isabela. The former excells with big single targets, and the latter is better with herds of minions. I'd usually let my team deal with the fodder while I played highly mobile troubleshooter. Taking out the big targets, quickly aiding a companion in trouble or simply knocking stray targets back into the team's AOE attacks. (That last one worked really well with Bethany)

My dual-wielding Hawke used Varric, Merrill, and Bethany/Aveline the most - initially for a break from the angst brigade, but then simply because they're effective.

I mainly play DW Rogues and what usually works for me is using Aveline for staggers and to CCC off Disorient, Varric mainly to keep the heat on Aveline and some extra DPS, and Anders for Buffs and CCC's. The synergy between their abilities are great, and there isn't a whole lot off FF to worry about.

I'm actually using Merrill, Fenris and Isabela. I'm finding that stagger/disorient CCCs, plus massive DPS is outweighing the need for a tank, but I haven't done the major bosses yet.
Gotta watch Fenris on nightmare, though, he'll chew up the squishies.

My recommendation is to have at least two physical attackers and two ranged attackers.
Some sample parties:
Dual Wield Rogue Hawke:
01- Aveline (tank), Hawke (dps), Bethany/Merrill (dps/control/debilitate), Anders (healing)
02- Aveline (tank), Hawke (dps), Varric (ranged dps/control), Anders (healing)
03- Aveline (tank), Hawke (dps), Sebastian (ranged dps/control), Anders (healing)
As a melee front liner, whether you're more of a combat rogue/agile fighter or ninja-style assassin, you want to have at least one tank to keep the heat off your enemies (Aveline) and two ranged attackers to supplement you. Anders is ideal for healing (Bethany makes a good secondary healer if you can do without the regroup spell) while Merrill is best for crowd control/debilitating enemies so you can make those crits count (Bethany also makes a good offensive/crowd control mage). If you can do without the ranged magic dps you can swap in Sebastian or Varric as snipers (Varric is squishy in the beginning but he can really come in handy at later levels).
Archer Rogue Hawke:
01- Aveline (tank), Carver/Fenris (melee dps), Hawke (ranged dps), Anders (healing)
02- Aveline (tank), Isabela (melee dps), Hawke (ranged dps), Anders (healing)
As an archer you want to have at least one healer (Anders is best though Bethany could make an adequate healer/dps although she can't resurrect fallen party members), one tank (Aveline of course is ideal), and one front line melee fighter (Carver, Fenris or Isabela) since you want enemies concentrating on the frontline attackers while you snipe them from behind.
Hope I helped

Also, I have two rogue Hawkes.
The first was a combat rogue/agile fighter who focused on being a duelist (a.k.a frontline rogue). In his party I kept Aveline as my tank, Merrill as my debilitator, and Anders as my healer (though I took Bethany just as often in his place since Anders annoys the tar out of me).
The second (canon Hawke) was more of a stealth-ninja who used decoys, traps, and backstabs to make his kills. I actually didn't use a tank as often and pretty much had Fenris on the frontlines (since he was my LI it made sense) cutting through enemies (we killed them so fast they couldn't really fight back) and had Anders/Bethany and Varric on the backlines. A bit of an unconventional party but was doable. Just made sure to keep Aveline when I needed a tank.

I mix up my parties, but since I play on casual and know pretty much every fight in the game I have no problem with insane party combinations.
But starting out my Rogue Hawke's party was mostly
Aveline/Anders/Varric or Isabela.

I usually play a rogue, and my party generally rolls with Aveline, Fenris, and the 4th slot filled up Anders or Varric.
I don't take a mage along most times, unless they are a romance partner.

Sweet responses guys! My current rogue party is slicing through everything insanely easily! Right now I'm rolling with Aveline, Isabella, and a mage. Usually Bethany, although I'm gonna have to change it again soon, damm you plot, Bethany is my favorite mage.

Had no problem getting through the game with Archer Hawke, Isa, Anders, and Merill.
Hawke stayed out of danger, stunning and slowing mostly
Isa cut through the grunts
Anders I had on Panacea for the extra heals
Merill can take care of her own a bit

I'm currently using Aveline, Varric and Merril with DW Hawke. If I had an Archer Hawke I'd take either Aveline or Fenris. Maybe go without a lock picker like Varric who knows Anders and Merril?
Definately possibly: Fenris, Anders and Merril.

I mostly used Aveline, Varric and Bethany in Act One, then replaced Bethany with Merrill in Act 2 (my Hawke was freaked out by the abomination and dropped Anders from the party in Act 2). I was nervous about not having a healer, but it worked out pretty well.

I'm currently playing a DW Rogue, on normal/ hard. Chapter 1, I used Aveline, Varric, Bethany/ Anders. But in Chapter 2 I rotate Aveline/ Merril/ Varric. Merril can used as a tank or for battlefield control, or both. I still use Anders until SPOILER:
I use Fenis only for after combat mop up (rune of fortune x3), when possible. And for his personal quests. I USE Isabella well for... and her personal quests.
SPOILER:
Bethany comes back.
