I missed BOTH cheap backpacks found early in the game and I'm not too happy about it. I just had to blow all my gold on my first pack. I have not made it too far into the game really (level 7). I just left Lothering for the first time and did the quest to get Shale. I guess it's not *that* much to redo but still not sure I want to start over. However, am I going to be struggling with inventory slots and cash such that going back for the 2 cheap backpacks is worth starting over at this point?

One other unrelated question about stealth. What level of stealth is required for it to actually work? I got the first level and everything detects me from a mile away.

If you have the Wardens Keep DLC, not sure if you even need the backpack upgrades, just dump everything into your storage chest, which should have been part of the game BTW not a DLC...

Stealth: how high is your cunning? Are you laying or deactivating traps? You need at least the second tier for it to be of any real use. Again. if you have Wardens Keep DLC the blood specialization for rogues gives you a huge uber boost to stealth.

Oh, I also missed getting the dog as well. :( I don't have the WK DLC and was trying to avoid paying for it. Seems silly to buy DLC for storage space unless there is some other compelling reason to purchase it.

yes, 20 item space will come in handy later

wardens keep:
the blood powers are sweet, and cost you no skill points, they aren't blood magic

I'd restart if I were you. You'll find that you probably missed some other stuff first time around.

Level 1 stealth works against mobs 1 level lower than you (i.e. almost never).

Level 2 stealth works against mobs the same level as you (white).

Level 3 stealth works against mobs 1 level higher than you (yellow).

Level 4 stealth works against mobs 2 levels higher than you (orange).

Warden's Keep is worth if for the pretty decent crawl you have to go through before getting the storage chest. Plus its good for stuff you dont want to destroy like gifts if you want to keep people in your party.

On the xbox the limit on back pack space seems to be topped at 120.. all the vendors that were supposed to sell back packs didn't after I reached 120.. . I never had any problem with inventory.. I never filled it up and in the places that you do start to fill it up.. like Orzammar, you can always just run back to town to sell off crud you don't want without having to worry about messing up a quest in any way. The beginning is tough to get gold.. but treasure levels as you level.. so by the end your finding higher equipment, selling for a lot more gold and your able to keep your party well equipped pretty easily. My first playthrough I really felt like I had screwed up also in the beginning but by the end my character was much better than I planned for her to be..(tomes, stat boosts..stuff like that.) and I had plenty of moola.
You can start over if you want but you'll still have a chance to get more back packs and more space.

I woiuld not restart the game, live and learn. You play through and you experience all of the mistakes and successes that you make - especially considering the way you can't please every NPC you meet without putting you at odds with other NPCs. Just enjoy the ride and do things differently the next time around. That's why they made the game so rich with possibilities.

Inventory always fills up if you are not focusing on only three of your NPCs. Assuming you don't bother hanging on to limited use defense gear and potions (the +30% fire/cold/nature/spirit stuff) for the most ideal scenarios. Y'know - you equip the right defense for the right enemy. It's such a crazy concept... So that's like 8 pieces of gear sitting in your inventory for Shale and the Hound alone, taking up space. Not to mention the gifts and crafting items and junk items that you were supposed to hang on to so you can use them to increase your military resources - I would have to argue that most of the 'never had a problem with inventory space' were newer players unaware of some basic RPG elements that veteran players come to expect. I did not buy Warden's Keep, but I don't want to start a silly internet war of one-hand clapping. So I won't detail the reasons why.

My only argument is, if you have a whole damned caravan following you around, that you protect personally - you might think they would have some space on their cart for some extra items. But just call me a realist...

On my first playthrough, I saw the first pack but I was so strapped for cash, I passed it by (I wasn't even aware that there was the opportunity to get a second pack). I assumed there would be plenty of opportunities. Obviously, I assumed wrong. I can't tell you how many items I had to destroy during my travels because I simply didn't have room.

It was difficult. Out in the field or deep in a dungeon, when I couldn't get to any merchant, there was no way to determine the actual value of the items I was destroying. I had to guess. I'm sure I guessed wrong at least once. I tried not to think about it.

Lothering is not *that* far into the game, yes? I assume you've put in maybe 4-8 hours (depending on how thorough you are)? If there are other aspects of your character's development you think could have been better (tweaking your stats, for example), it wouldn't be a big deal to restart. After all, you can skip the dialogues and codex entries you've already read. Right there, that cuts out a LOT of re-play time.

If you want to restart JUST for the packs, may not be worth the effort Just know that, without those packs, there's a chance you may have to struggle with inventory juggling. I know I did. I'm on my second playthrough now and you'd better believe I got those packs this time!

If you examine items it will tell you the value up at the top. I didn't realize this until my second play through lol, would have saved me lots of worry!

I *think* that info is only displayed when you are at a merchant (when you really don't *need* it because you're already AT the merchant).  I'll have to look again, but I don't think that bit of info is there when you're just shuffling through your packs away from a merchant.

Heh now I have to go look!

At least in my game it shows up anytime I click the eye icon. It opens the closer lookey-lookey screen and up at the top of that it shows the value. Keeping in mind though it shows the ACTUAL value and not the "sell-for" value. You'll get less for it than what it lists. And it can be kind of tedious to check that screen for a bunch of items, but it works in a pinch when you're trying to cut down on clutter in your pack.

It should be noted that I have the PC game, if you're playing on XBox I guess I don't know if it works the same... don't see why it wouldn't buuuut... anyway! Hope it helped!

Ahhhh. That may be the difference, Beach. I'm on the 360. Apparently, there are a number of differences between the 360 UI and the PC UI. Looks like this may be another of those differences.

Well then I could see how that would be mildly annoying. Cost is a huge factor when deciding what to destroy. I wish they'd just tell you in the item description.

Question 1:  Well sadly I have to do the same thing for practiclly for all my characters. Where are these 'cheap backpacks'? Anyhoo...they aren't 100% needed but my problem is with a few of my guys I destroyed some 'Gifts' and even sold some to some shops to free up inventory to make room for bigger, badder armor and weapons. However the + side of selling them was I bought a good chunk of them back from the shops I sold them to. the - side was  I bought a good chunk of them back from the shops I sold them to and spent kind of a fortune doing so.

Question 2: Well you can learn level 1 stealth at the start. However in my opinion I say you need to be...8 or 10? to get COMBAT STEALTH (Level 3 stealth) and have enough CUNNING POINTS researched to actually have it effectively work. It works wonders almost because with one of my human noble rouges I can pop it on, open a door, sneak up on a mage and drop him before it starts blasting the crap out the mage. Level 2 stealth isn't to bad but I think you can be detected but not as often as level 1. I am working on to get the max one and will see how that works.

Cheap Pack #1 is available as soon as you get to Ostagar.  Check with the Quartermaster.  He sells the pack for 57s, which is a serious deal, considering those same 10-item packs cost 6g and higher in other areas.  If only I'd known during my first playthrough.  Cheap Pack #2 is also available from the Ostagar Quartermaster, but I think you have to go away (do the quest for D) and come back  before the second pack shows up.  It also costs 57s.  I hope that's not too spoilerific...

Regarding the Gifts, some gifts get you big approval ratings (5, 6, 7 or more) but there are other gifts that apparently don't really do all that much for you.  Sure, they might get you a point or two but nothing earthshattering.  Sadly, I don't think there's any in-game way to know for sure which are which.  Wouldn't it be nice if the descriptions said "Hmmmm I bet ALISTAIR would like this..." /wink.

I did end up restarting and I'm glad I did because I missed a pretty sizable amount of stuff including the dog, both cheap packs and many more quests/items than I imagined (like feeding the prisoner to open that chest..never even noticed him the first time). I'm usually pretty thorough in searching for stuff but I failed to find/complete many things at Ostagar.

As for the cheap packs..first is when you get to Ostagar. The trick is you have to buy it BEFORE you go into the wilds to complete the quests from Ostagar. The second is available from the same Quartermaster when you return from the wilds.

Thanks for all the replies and info.

Since this was primarily a topic about backpacks I thought I would add that I found a backpack for 6g at the Quartermaster after you do the Circle Tower event. I'm guessing you need to side with the Templars for this to happen but not sure as I haven't done it another way. Not as cheap as the first 2 but cheaper than I have found elsewhere.
