I stopped reading at your Hawke should be male & predefined. If I were forced to play Douchy McDouche Garret Hawke, that would have been enough to make me storm the bioware office with my pitch fork. You may be a dude & like to play dudes, but many of us ladies would like a character WE can relate to. This is the whole reason I didn't bother trying the Witcher.
As a man I don't like playing a male.
As a man, I don't like playing a female. <_<
Nothing inherently wrong with it, just not for me.
I do however prefer, and support, games that allow that option.
Why?
Because there are lots of female gamers who DON'T want to be stuck playing males. (see above)
And, because my wife said so ...
If a certain Polish company has any business sense it will begin offering games with this option REAL soon.

It was the first time I pre-ordered as well. D'oh.
On the other hand Bioware have made, what is it, 7 great games before DA2 (I might even grudgingly allow Jade Empire into the 'great' category, although I didn't like it anywhere near as much as the others) and DA:O was the pinnacle of that. So if I was going to pick a company, and a franchise, to have a lot of trust in it didn't seem like a bad idea at the time.
So yeah, for me Laidlaw and the team dropped a clanger with DA2, but here's hoping to a healthy round of lessons learned for DA3...
Meh, I personally would place Jade Empire far and away above Baldur's Gate 1 and Neverwinter Nights. But that's just me.
Jade Empire was even more streamlined and dumbed down than Dragon Age 2 ever was.

I enjoyed Jade Empire. It was primarily made for the Xbox and I was very happy to finally play it a year later on the PC. It was a beautiful, well-crafted game and it had John Cleese in it, which naturally overshadowed anything else.
DA2 lacks that polished look from previous creations, Jade Empire included.

I tried jade Empire some days agoooo on my xbox360.
Waaaah ! Too old ! I can't play it, the graphics make me cringe.
Positive points : I found the combat system very well developed for a game on console xbox at the time. I was a little surprised and impressed. Also, the number of choices in the branches of combat, I liked very much. To have the opportunity to play a girl or a boy. At the time, it was not common on consoles and the same for the romance, I never saw something like this before, so much developped. I think it was really a great advancement.
Now I am not at all attached to this Asian world. It lack something. Maybe I have not played enough, I do not know. But I did not feel he had real depth, the lore, the background weren't enought epic in my opinion.
Dragon age, that's from the beginning, from the prologue of the game I was immediatly interested by the universe. Mass effect, well, after Eden Prime.
And second negative point I think I found the lyrics and the sentences absolutely basic and poor. Not at all flamboyant. Not captivating at all. Yet we are in a powerful asian empire, there should be something that raises a kind of high culture, the legacy of fantastic stories.
So yes, it's a game of the past, I know, but if I look at the previous bioware games, It seems there has always been writing of quality. I watched a bit Baldur'gate and the quality was there. So I do not understand why we reached that level of basic language. That's my opinion as well.
But this last point is important, because, I could have forgiven the graphics in 2011, if There hadn't had this issue.

I personally can't stand DnD or the Vancian casting system. The gameplay mechanics were not what attracted me to Jade Empire. Jade Empire in my opinion featured far superior presentation than either Baldur's Gate 1 or Neverwinter Nights. Both games barely had a storyline and didn't feature any significant character interaction, both of which I love about Bioware.

How could JE have been streamlined or dumbed down given that it was the first of its kind made by Bioware? Streamlined and dumbed down based on what? Games that have nothing to do with it?
Never mind that IMO there is nothing dumbed down about either DAII or JE.

This is nonsense. If Jade Empire's gameplay can be compared to any other, it's The Witcher 2. Except it has a better learning curve.

Are we using "dumbing down" and "simplifying" interchangeably here? Because if we are, hell I'm sure even Laidlaw has admitted that things in DA2 were simplified.

No offense but you have done little but bash Bioware even before DAII was launched. Is that your purpose here or something?<_<

I'd probably trust them with it more now than ever before. Current Bioware's Dragon Age II had much greater similarities to Jade Empire in terms of playstyle. I also find the setting superior to the swords n sorcery incorporated in DA, which I find to be less interesting. But that's just personal preference.

Oh, how hilarious that is, given that MIke Laidlaw (source of all evil according to some people here) worked on Jade Empire as a writer/designer.

And bang goes your credibility given Mike Laidlaw was one of the driving forces behind Jade Empire and one of the criticisms of DA2 has been how it is closer to Jade Empire in style than DAO.MorrigansLove wrote...

Yes, let's stop this right now, shall we? If you'd like to contribute to the discussion, by all means. If you're not interested in doing so, however, it might be a good idea to take a step back and bow out of this thread.

I would like to contribute to the discussion by saying that Mike Laidlaw should've done Jade Empire 2 instead of messing up Dragon Age.

Also if there is someone to blame for DA2 it's EA wanting Bioware to make another game so fast, It's the gameplay team and it's Gaider for making everyone bat**** crazy.

Moreover, it was thematic. Jade Empire was a love letter to all those wuxia films and crazy martial arts films, and the gameplay transmitted that feeling beautifully.Upsettingshorts wrote...

The main reason Dragon Age 2 reception was lukewarm would be mishandled expectations, in my book.
