Hi All. My character is a Level 19 Mage with Force Mage Specialization. I'm having SERIOUS difficulty in the Mage Fights chapter of Act III after you discover that Anders blew up the Chantry, you're sent to fight this MASSIVE Golem-type thing with lots of Arcane and other various types of Demons that just surround your party.
No matter how many times I've tried I can't last for more than 3 minutes, even with frequent pausing and party-healing, trying to micro-manage the battle.
I have the CE Strategy Guide, but if anyone has any personal strategies that they could share I'd welcome your input!

That fight can be a pain. Take out the blood mage first and avoid the pride demon's vortex thing-y.

The dispel magic ability can be your best friend in this battle IMO.

As other has said kill the blood mage first. Preferrably team up on him
Then I will advise going after the pride demon. All the time make sure to watch out its charges (watch its animation) and advoid it chrusing prison (the blue circle that charges up into a vortex)

Also, if he's a Grey Warden, Carver. He will destroy everything in his way pulling aggression from the Shade mob while Hawke plays clean up..

As already suggested, take out the blood mage first. BRITTLE ---> Archer's Lance/Mighty Blow combo can do a hefty amount of damage. After that, focus fire (select whole party, order to attack) on the blood mage until he drops dead. The easiest way to go from here is to move your whole party back to where you came from (back to the stairs) and drop a gravitic ring somewhere in the middle of the battlefield, so that you immobilize most of those pesky shades. Then go nuts with AoE abilities like Firestorm, Tempest, Chain Lightning, Cone of Cold, etc... After the shades are gone, focus on the Pride demon. Fire off another another BRITTLE ---> Archer's Lance/Mighty Blow combo and focus fire after it, and he should be dead in no time.
Also, if you are playing on Nightmare, you should consider the different elemental resistances and weaknesses that enemies posses in this encounter.
-bloodmage - immune to spirit, weak to electricity
-shades - immune to spirit, weak to electricity and nature
-pride demon - immune to fire, weak to cold and nature
So equip electricity and nature based weapons and go to work. You deal twice as much damage, if the correct elemental weapon is used.
