Sorry, culture difference perhaps? Where I grew up that word was implicitly derogatory & hateful, as much so as any racial slur ("N" word, etc).. it wasn't seen just as an abbreviation, but an intended slur used to try to verbally hurt a gay person.

It was knee jerk reaction too perhaps on my part with my post... as a teen I was ignorant and intolerant in some regards, I used that word as many of my  "friends"  did to harass or tease homosexual classmates or people we just thought might be.... I grew up eventually and was very ashamed of my earlier behavior / outlook... that word still brings back shameful memories and I still know it strictly as a slur (as does anyone / everyone else I know).

Anywhooo.. moving on.
