In the Dragon Age II Prologue when we have to pick a side between The Mercanaries or The Smugglers, upon asking the mercenary leader Meeran why Gamlen is in their debt he says that Gamlen cheated some of his men in a wallop match.

Then in ACT III During the quest "Gamlens greatest treasure" when asking him what a wallop mallet is Gamlen states "I havn't played wallop since I was a kid" So am I to understand that Meeran is still holding a grudge since his wittle red iron mercenaries were cheated back when they were all 6 or something? Were the red irons a childrens gang or something?
Or is Gamlen a dirty rotten liar, something already established earlier in the story?

Or is the story just contradicting itself?

Gamlen? Lying? You shock me..

Hawke mentions wallop to Anders at some point prior, but by Gamlen's Greatest Treasure (s)he's forgotten what a wallop mallet is, seems like every mention of wallop introduces some sort of continuity issue. Oh well.

"Gamlen can't say good morning without lying twice!"

The idea of Meeran and the littlest mercenaries swearing vengeance on Gamlen cracks me up.

Maybe Gamlen wasn't the one playing. Maybe he was betting on some kid and tried to coerce lady luck.

Also I hate Gamlen. He's like my p.o.s uncle in RL.

It's no worse than Anders saying the templars keep looking for him / or that he must leave in his home base. Just another plot hole (or far more likey his paranoia can't be sure on that one).

It wasn't lying. Meeran is talking about betting on a match, not playing in one. Gamlen is a little old to be playing competitive sports.

Despite him being the rotten scroundrel, we're introduced too in Act 1, I symphatise(sp?) with him throughout the whole game, I mean he is family after all. He just suffered from what every sibling relationship is, Jealousy. I mean if he didn't care he wouldnt have weekly visits with your mom or come to your house to rage after her death and Hawke clearly cares because he goes out of his/her way to save his ass. Of course Gamlen thanks Hawke in typical Gamlen fashion, but the love is there.

You're not seriously looking for continuity in DA2, are you?... <_<

His mid-stage QB I believe. He starts going on about tearing down the Chantry, and the purple response is "why do my friends have such grandiose plans? Why do they never just want to be the best Wallop player in Lowtown?" and Anders jokes back "would the mighty Hawke deign to associate with the best Wallop player in Lowtown." Something like that.

It's particularly bad when you notice that the line in GGT that reads "What in the Maker's name is a Wallop mallet" is also purple, IIRC.

Gamlen showed up in the Amell Estate in my post campaign save tonight. I think he needs to be paying rent.

If you don't have your sibling alive when you play Legacy, then Uncle Gamlen comes to see you when you get back and you discover if it hadn't been for him aiding his sister's illicit liaison, Hawke might not have existed at all, so sometimes it's helpful to have a compulsive liar as a relative.
Mind you have a little bit of sympathy with the way his parents treated him - left everything to an elder sister who ran off with a forbidden love. No wonder he was a bitter about it and he may drop in once in a while but he doesn't sponge off Hawke. Gamlen pretends not to care but clearly he does. You could have a lot worse than him and Charade for relatives - think what they would have been like if Leandra had married that noble!

Since Meredith alludes to this in conversations during Act 3, I just assumed that from Act 2 onward, Anders is kept relatively safe due to Hawke's status in Kirkwall; first as a new noble, then as the Champion. That's not to say that he wouldn't be dragged off if he did anything overt like attack templars in public however.

Anyway, I think the wallop issue is just an unfortunate inconsistency in the writing. Or, with the Act 3 quest dialogue, they can't be 100% sure that you spoke to the mercenaries about the reason for the debt, or that you joked with Anders about it later on. So it's just a precaution.

I will use this example as yet more evidence that you are not supposed to pick the same personality-options throughout every dialogue in the game. It introduces character and continuity inconsistencies. :P

Couldn't this be a matter of perception of time? In the Prologue, Gamlen may or may not have recently played a wallop match (or bet on one, or arranged one, whatever). In Act 3, which is a good 6-7 years later, it could very well be that the last time he *played* wallop was at least 6-7 years ago, and for some people, that might seem like a lifetime already gone. While the "since I was a kid" comment is suspect, for all we know, Gamlen was quite into his cups when he was doing his swindling. It could have been wallop, Diamondback, or tiddly-winks for all he remembers. In the Prologue, he just knows that he has a debt to pay, and he had better manage to pay it soon.

And yes, he's a liar.

But really, he probably interfered in a match that he was betting on to make his side win, and happened to get caught. Unluckily for him, he was playing against the wrong people.
