For example, I've been flirting with and slept with Isabela, and then Merrill. Will there be a confrontation between them later, will one ask me to make up my mind, or is there another way the game resolves which is my *real* significant other?

I 'd like to stick with Izzy, because she's a delicious pirate **** and I like everything about her interactions. Merrill was more a result of my curiousity wanting to see how a rivalmance plays out. Since I didn't click the "it didn't mean anything" choice after the Merrill scene, I'm hoping there's another choice in the future.

Edit: For the record, I did search for this and came up empty. Not thoroughly, but enough that I didn't feel silly littering the forums.

I don't think there's a confrontation. As I understand it Merrill and Anders are romantic juggernauts. If you have your Hawke sleep with either of them all other romances are immediately considered finished. Even if you had selected "it didn't mean anything" I'm pretty sure Isabella will still consider your romance over.

I'm happy to be corrected by a more well informed person (who has actual experience with this).

I think with any of the romances it is imperative that you click the broken heart icon straight away if you want to continue to a proper romance with anyone else. People never confront you about your choices, though they may mention them in passing before they sleep with you - Anders does anyway - but if you say it didn't mean anything, then he carries right on with you (but then is all hurt if you tell him it was a one night stand as though your previous encounters wasn't a clue).

Isabella also seems rather protective of Merrill and so wouldn't approve of you dumping her. However, someone on another post suggested that if you have agreed to have a "no feelings" sexual relationship with Isabella and agree to marry Merrill, then Isabella will continue to be your "friends with benefits" mistress. I've not tried this myself as I'm not really into Merrill as a romance but you'll find it on one of the recent posts about Isabella.

There is no confrontation. Merrill and Anders are romantic juggernauts; sleeping with either of them will instantly kill your Isabela and/or Fenris romances dead. This is intended behavior.

Well you can consider the Ander's dialogue about Merrill (or whatever's your other partner might be, haven't checked) before his quest in chapter 3 and Isabella's "you hurt Merrill I'ma rip ya balls off" speech somewhere in chapter 2 as sort of a confrontation.

Basically, Isabela doesn't feel she's deserving of love at all, especially Hawke's love. If your Hawke moves on to Merrill, whom Isabela adores like a little sister, she'll simply tell Hawke that if they hurt Merrill she'll hunt you down and murder you.

Fenris is much the same, if you move on from Fenris to anyone else (isabela included) he just accepts it, because he doesn't believe himself good enough for Hawke.

The only one who ever gets jealous is Anders, and you actualy don't have to sleep with him or even flirt with him at all for him to be jealous. Anders always loves Hawke.

Anders confronts you about Merril or Fenris, despite everything. You can consider it  a "friendly concern". Or not, given the banter he has with Merril, if you previously slept with Isabela and then let  Merr move in.
It's hardly a "confrontation", but Varric has a banter with Isabela about your Hawke and Merril, that changes slighly, if you teased her about love(or so I heard).

Well Isabella also proposes you and your romance go with her on a ship if you give her Castillion's ship and are friends with her. Which suits her character a lot better than any jealousy scene that might have been there instead.

As far as Anders goes, I find it a bit odd for him to give friendly advice to a rival who hates his guts and never romanced him. But well he is an odd guy.

Can't argue with that. Rivalry with him is pretty twisted. I remember having a Hawke, charming and manipulative, who was abusive in a glib way, but acted pretty friendly and relaxed. It makes less sense though, when you have a direct, angry character, going full pro-templar, but well - that's Anders for you. He's attached regardless.

So Isabela and Fenris are the hardest to go all the way with? Not surprised. I wanted to see how the Merrill rivalmance played out and told her it was just a fling *I admit I felt like garbage considering it was Merrill* and thought things were still solid with Isabela. Lo and behold Varric asks about Merrill during "Friendly Concern". I had to go back to the beginning of Act II. I was angry.

Join the Club - I have twice got into a fix over sleeping with Isabella, not telling her instantly it was nothing but a fling and then finding Fenris romance was crocked, so had to return to beginning of the Act. DAO romances were a lot easier to manage and Warden was able to initiate dialogue and even invite to tent on own initiative. With DA2 you have to be a mind reader and conduct serial monogamy, whilst your companions decide whether or not they are worthy of you. I am convinced I told Fenris I thought he was good enough but there you go.

My biggest disappointment with Isabella was agreeing to be in a "friends with benefits" relationship and then not being given the opportunity to change my mind later and tell her I loved her. By this time we were in Act 3 and way too late to go back to the pre-sex moment in Act 2 - so Hawke just had to grin and bear it.

Anders will mention Isabella or Fenris (I haven't seen one with Merrill) if you were romancing them before romancing him, and will give you a chance to stick with them if he comes up to your bedroom but other than that, I think that's the closest thing you get to having a decision point.
