Because JE was released in 2003 or 2004, which is right around when I became a BioWare fan, therefore making me more like an old fan.

So am is my opinion more important because I liked Bioware for their older games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights? (Hell I own MDK2 and Shattered Steel) If so I think DA2 is their worst game ever.

BioWare keeps getting better as time goes on. Look at one of their older games like Baldur's Gate and compare it with Mass Effect or Dragon Age and you'll see what I mean.

Bioware is only keeping up with the technology, yet all i hear when comparing BG to DAO is most people siding with BG.  Cant really compare ME as thats a bit different in genre.

Hell I own MDK2

Who doesn't? O.o

comparing BG to DAO

More on this.. BG has more content, Origins has better graphics, in my opinion.

I've always loved Sprite Animation more than modern 3D graphics, so i know which one i'd pick.

There are more hairstles then there were in Origins. And I'd wait before I listed 'no expansion' as something you didn't like about DA II. There will probably be one eventually. Just be paitent.

I just finished my first playthrough of DA2 and thought I'd share a few of my disappointments. I actually wasn't the biggest fan of DA:O from a gameplay standpoint although I did love the setting and lore of the universe.

1) Distinct lack of unique locations. I understand it's been said countless times before but it really bears repeating. Continually finding myself in what seemed like one of three different 'dungeons' really got tedious, not to mention I would often find myself blocked off by random slabs of stone. It all just seemed a bit rushed.
2) The game is supposed to span a ten year period and yet there appears to be little to no change in Kirkwall, your companions, or anyone else for that matter. Fenris has squatted in the same mansion for ten years and hasn't even tried to clean up? Maybe someone could have grown a beard in that time? I'm looking at you, Varric. A change of clothes/physical appearance/outlook for your companions between the three different Acts would have been nice and made it a little more obvious that significant periods of time have passed. Being told by the narrator that it is now three years later just wasn't enough.
3) The lore of the DA world just seemed to be completely ignored and forgotten when it came to Hawke's actions. I remember being ambushed by some Qunari, in the Gallows no less, so Hawke rammed his mage's staff through his chest, as you do, and started unleashing all kinds of heretical blood magic that would have an NPC surrounded and beaten to death by angry templars. They didn't even blink twice when Hawke did it. Casting any magic at all in the city should have had repercussions really; we're constantly being told how oppressed and hated all magic users are and yet the PC experiences none of it. I love playing mage's but in a story like DA2's it just didn't make much sense to be able to play one. Of course removing mage's as a playable class would have created quite a ruckus I'm sure.

Oh and for some reason the Irish/Welsh Dalish annoyed the life out of me.

And for balance, what I did like:

1) Combat vastly improved over DA:O. Granted I've only played the 360 version but the very slow and cumbersome combat of the original was a bit of a turn off for me. I've also only really played as a mage so I can't speak for the other classes, but I had a blast in DA2. It was faster, spells were flashier, and blasting enemies with my staff just looked awesome. I don't think there's anything wrong with combat being sped up and being a little 'over the top'.
2) I have no doubt that I'm in the minority here but I thought that both the characters and story were improvements over the original. DA:O had the classic ancient evil must be destroyed and you're our only hope feel to it, and that's been done to death. In DA2 I was just a refugee who was trying to improve my lot in life and got caught up in the struggle between two political factions. Rather than being the all-conquering hero of Ferelden, I was merely someone with enough power to tip the scales of victory in favour of one party or the other. I also think the Chantry is one of the most interesting aspects of DA so I was glad it played such a central role in the plot.
3) Dialogue. Again, I have no doubt I'm in the minority - and made myself a few enemies in the process - but I believe the dialogue wheel was a massive improvement over the original. It always seemed a little jarring to me that in a game where every other character had a voice my character would be completely silent. It really removed the feeling of immersion. The dialogue wheel ensured that a conversation flowed and I could easily choose between good/sarcastic/evil options. And there was still a LOT of dialogue.

Further in now.

More ranting.

1. What is up with the seriously dumbed down console crap? The GUI from DA:O was far more esthetically pleasing. The combat and animations are completely action RPG crap for consoles. The wrecked the ruleset that was made specifically for DA. Dumbed down for the console crowd.

2. The world is small, the story is small. DA:O had a pressing issue and enough space to explore a new world setting. The pressing issue lasted throughout the game, and it felt like you were participating in something greater than just you. This bloody game is just about getting rich and getting a bigger house. There's no over-arching menace, pressing issue, or reason to go on other than getting rich. Doesn't matter if you are playing a goody-two-shoes or a cut-throat mercenary, it's all exactly the same.
They took a fantastic game and dumbed it down to a console action RPG. Even the previous Bioware console games like Jade Empire, KOTOR, ME had real, engaging story arcs that allowed for different approaches even if the end-game is the same. Not so here. Rail-roaded. Down a pointless track.

3. It's so completely not what I'd come to expect from Bioware. I suppose other forces are at work, but I'd thought they'd keep their integrity. Proof of the pudding's in the eating, and this pudding is just nasty.

The combat is one of DA2's biggest strengths if you ask me. This post reeks of PC elitist nonsense.

It's not nonsense, he has a point (but me may have used another tone), I understand DA:Os engine isn' suitable for consoles, but the same way DA2's system is crapy to play on PC (mouse&leyboard), even more if you are seeking a tactical party combat instead of a more hack'n'slash orientation (and also fails as hack'n'slash/action combat, IMO, compared to God Of War or even Prince Of Persia Sands Of Time trilogy.......)

1. The combat system
I was under the impression this was Dragon Age, the combat system makes you feel like your playing Prince Of Persia instead. The way you hold your weapons behind you like it's some lame anime cartoon is horrible.
2. Character customization
What character customization? seriously i cant put armor on any of my fellow adventurers. You give me a two handed sword wielding elf in spandex and i can't even put him in full plate to make him not look like a weenie? and a dwarf that doesn't know how to button up his shirt? Sten was a giant BA that looked awesome in full plate wielding a sword the elf looks like he should be scrubbing floors along side Zevran in a brothel (I slit Zevrans throat every time i beat DA1 btw what a lame character, had to reload the first time but it was worth it).
3. The map system
There is something old school RPG about an actual world map that is almost a must in any RPG. The map in DA2 didn't even look like a city, it was just a bunch of random points on the screen. And i know its been harped on but re-using area's of the game is just not a good idea in any game. I think Halo 1 is the only game to ever get away with a little repetitive areas during a level. With all the flaws this game had to begin with the repetitive maps actually rendered it unplayable for me.

1) too much loot at times (especially jewelry)
2) a little to much "tell, don't show". The codex entries for what the companions are doing between acts should have been included in Varric's story, or in the first conversations in the respective acts.
3) 100% Friendship/Rivalry needed for last conversation.. For most people that isn't a problem, but depending on character this requires some metagaming. Also i think, that seperate friendship/rivalry bars would have been better (as in getting along personaly with someone well, but disagreeing on political issues. With the system that is used now, this results in neutrality - the worst of all feelings).

SOME SPOILERS (mainly to give examples)
~
~
~
~

1.  Continuity problems is dialogue and story:  Example ... the Viscount comments about how they gave the Qunari a "gift" of a place to stay in Lowtown.  Er no man it was the Docks!  Apparently someone doens't know where they've been staying.  But this is more than in just in place ... like when I killed Varric's brother yet yet comments in a later act as if he's still alive!.

2.  Not integrating all decisions:  Hard to explain this, but biggest example .... when rescuing Keran, Anders comments to tone down the blood mage angle to the Templars.  Good idea.  So what is the FIRST thing my dipweed Hawke blurts out?  You got blood mages infiltrating the Templars!  Oh and Keran might be possessed!  WTF BioWare!  One of the many times where I had no control over my Hawke in what she said.  Way out of character (even on Diplomatic speech)

3.  Not enough items for Healing focused mages.  Yup, it is my goal to make one and doing quite well, but getting bupkis on things to use.  Heck there is more item for Blood Magic!  If I only knew how to mod things I'd add more >.>

1. Combat - The mechanics in the abilities and such look like they could work, but when you can just hit that button of awesome to plow through it all, who needs the mechanics. Also all the melee charging and leaping was stupid. Decide! aRPG or cRPG, not a hybrid. Warcraft 3 had better RPG than this (and it is an RTS)... oh yeah, too simple
2. Customization - lack thereof. Companions included.
3. Art style - get a new engine.

Story was okay except the end and it was too short. Where is my 80hour run without side quests?

1. Can't give my companions all the wonderful armor I've found, I can't change them from melee to ranged, they are stuck in their roles, and that was bad. Like swooping only worse.
2. I CAN'T FIX ANYTHING IN THIS GAME. I CAN'T WIN. I'M ULTIMATELY INEFFECTIVE.
3. I am limited as to what kind of mage I can be and what kind of spells I can use and the same thing for the other mages in my party.

[Edited for Spoiler]
