... Topics like these make me cringe.  If I list squadmates I'll most likely just play favorites rather than stay objective and focus on the writing, so based on that I'll be as objective as possible and name three examples compared to how relevant they are to their missions.

Example of brilliance
1: Mordin. Pure and utter brilliance when it comes to writing. Both his missions revolve around his genius and how if affects others (in a positive (Omega - Clinic) and in a negative (Tuchanka - Genophage) light. He goes through soul searching and immense character development in no time at all if you confront him about what he did.

Middle of the road

2: Garrus. I love Garrus, he's my bromance. But his writing and importance leaves a lot to be desired (he came back because he's a fan favorite, so what can you do? ). His mission is an introduction to the three merc bands, and his loyalty mission is basically the same as his personal mission from the first game - Revenge. As much as I like him, he's not really involved in the story as much as I'd like, yet his mission served it's purpose as an introduction, and his loyalty mission is packed with character development. (STAY paragon this time around Garrus).

3: Tali. Poor Tali. I like her, I really do but she's not important at all. It feels like she's the medium between Shepard and the matter at hand more than anything else. Her recruitment mission is about dark energy build up and rapidly dying stars and not something directly related to her (other than "go there, fetch stuff"). At least Garrus disrupted the merc bands to get them after him. Her loyalty mission is about the war between the quarians and the geth more than anything else - and her involvement is based on ANOTHER order she received from her father. Again, not a personal motivation - but a motivation shared by all quarians. They want to go home. I'd prefer it if squadmates get any missions, let the mission be about THEM rather than letting them become an unfortunate medium to the matter at hand.

Again, I like Tali (I like all the squadmates. ), but she's worse off than most squaddies when it comes to relevance.

This will have to do, an example on who I find to be best OBJECTIVELY. This is not a personal list based on the squadmates I like the most, but on how I feel they factor into the story (or their part of the story)

Lets see, dont want to place someone first when I like multiple characters so Ill list it in groups.

ME1

Kai, Liara and Wrex. Spent the most time with playthrhus with this trio. Ash has some great lines too but most times I spent as a Vanguard or Soldier so I didnt use her as much. Great conversations about boot camp though. Hehehehe.

Indifferent: Tali and Garrus. The only time I used them alot was to get the achivos related to them so meh. didnt hit a big cord with me.

ME 2

Samera, Miranda, Morden and Kasumi. Ended up using them alot. Personality wise I enjoyed having Sam and Kas around the most. I wish I could have had more conversations with Jacob in a comrade sort of way. Seems like a solid guy to have in a barfight but unfortunately had to watch Maleshep vids to see what Jacob would have said in a nuetral/friend manner. Sad really. I was ready to like him as a buddy.

Had tons of fun with Liara but since she's mostly dlc squad Ill count her in a carry over sense. Really that dlc soothed alot of ruffled feathers for me. For both my friend sheps and the ones romancing her.

Legion was good but not enough content with him. Hopefully ME3 changes this. Would have been nice to see him earlier in the game. Felt sorry for Jack and will gladly give her a rocket launcher to use on TIMMEHs face later but she didnt have too much to say to femsheps.

Neutral

Thane: Didnt use him much but eventually Ill get around to bringing him on more missions during another playthru. Probably when I make a Engineer shep. Grunt was funny at times but I usually used him as a soak sheild.

I really have a soft spot for most of them but if I had to choose, based on my overall experince(playing ME1 and ME2.)

In order of fondness.

Wrex. He makes no excuses for his ruthlessness.If the galaxy was coming to an end(lol) I would make sure he's standing beside me. His presence makes me breathe easier.

The very first time I meet Wrex he is arguing with a c-sec officer. I'll never forget.
C-sec officer: do you want us to arrest you?
Urdnott Wrex: I want you to try.

........ I'm kind of indifferent about the rest to be perfectly honest. I liked the potential in these three, though i think the writing and dialogue could have been better if there hadn't been such a squadie cluster bum in ME2.

I liked Samara because i think her Justicar code is the most interesting thing Bioware have done since making games in Forgotten Realms lore. (Which admittedly shouldn't count since the lore isn't their's).

Jack i liked because she was troubled, with good reason, though i would've liked the experiments to be touched on a bit more so there was more understanding behind her emotional instability.

Mordin i liked because he reminded me of the many, many, mad wizards from fantasy set RPGs i've played.

The rest of the squad just didn't spark anything in me much at all. Isn't to say i hate them. Or dislike them. I'm just kind of indifferent, glazed them over and didn't take much of an interest in any part of them at all.
