I am having the same issue I had 1.5 years ago when I installed this on my old comp. This is a Direct2Drive download. I have been troubleshooting this from this site and the EA site. Any suggestions would be welcome. Here are my new comp
specs and what I have tried:

Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU 2.8GHz
Clock Speed: 2806MHZ
Phys Mem: 11.9 GB
Display: NVidia Geforce GTS 450
VRAM: 1.50 GB
Sound: Creative SB X-Fi
OS: Windows 7
DirectX 10.0

What is the issue?
After "Press Any Key" on opening scene the screen freezes and says, "Mass Effect has stopped working."

What have I tried?
Updating Sound and Video Drivers
Reinstalling and clicking installed correctly
Updating to patch 1.01 and 1.02
Disabling Roxio and PowerDvD
Ran as Admin
Ran from masseffect.exe
Disabled Nvidia High Definition Audio Drivers
Windows Compatibility Mode as XP SP3
Tried rolling back NVidia drivers to 275.33
Turning down UAC slider to Never Notify

Really starting to think this game is crap. ME2 runs smoothly without any adjustments.

After many hours of troubleshooting it looks like the Geforce GTS 450 card is not compatible with ME1. The recommended NVidia drivers 174.74 and 175.19 are not compatible with Geforce 4 series PhysX cards. Someone stated on the NVidia website that the PhysX cards do not work well with older games. I will say that I run BGII and NWN2 without a problem. So I think it is a combination of the ME1's crew and NVidia. If anyone can prove me wrong and knows a fix, please feel free to share it.

You may try the 258. series of drivers, they are supposed to do well also.

The GTS450 is nothing more than a 8800GTS with DX11 support, so it should be compatible with ME1. ME1 wasnt exactly the best coded example of a game using the Unreal3 engine.

Yiou might be missing the visual c++ distributable that gets installed with Disk and Steam copies. Try downloading and running it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but 258 drivers aren't compatible with GTS 450. Tried 260.89 and .99 and both did not recognize my card. I'll try a few more before 285.xx and see.

Bogs. Thanks for the link. Installed the 64bit as suggested but no change. I even turned the graphics all the way down... no dice. Weird thing is that this is the same exact issue I had on my Vista computer before I finally cracked it, but I can't remember what i did.

I get through the Bioware intro screens. Then when I get to the Mass Effect "press any key" title screen the earth will start to shift by like normal, but it freezes right after the smaller planet leaves the screen. Then I get a "Mass Effect has stopped working" message. After a couple seconds windows tries to identify the problem and then says due to a problem this program has stopped working. It gives no more details.

This problem has been consistent. In about 30 reloads today, it always crashes at the same point and the same way. I found the log and here it is:

Try the Omega drivers instead of the official ones.

anyone speak russian? and emoticon?

have you redownload it at all? i'd try a fresh download before reinstalling, and also maybe an Origin download(you'll have to talk to EA directly to get one, they don't list the older games but they're still available).

Actually, I don't think that the first ME PC Game was ever an EA store download. It most likely was released before EA bought Bioware, or something of that nature.

If teh same file fails to load again, send me your email address via PM, and I'll email that file across to you, in case its a corruption in the installation process.

Okay guys. Thanks for all your help. It took me a couple more failed downloads from D2D before I was finally able to get it to run. It took 4 frustrating downloads of 2 hours or less. I'm not sure what the culprit was on my end, but I kept getting missing files from my downloads. I was able to play last night for a couple hours smoothly.

I am running the game in XP SP3, as administrator, from the masseffect.exe file on max settings.

Thanks again for your help.

No, actually...an 8800 GTS has 128 shader processors while the GTS 450 has 192.  It's half of a GTX 460.

Hey, SSV, I wonder if Bogs may have had the GTS 250 in mind, which was related to the 9800 GTX-plus. Meanwhile, all's well here. I'm happy for our OP's sake.

I can no longer find the site that had the comparative reviews and had them both benchmarked side by side, with the authors note about the DX11 support.

^ Says some intel chips aren't compatible with Win7 mode.......geez. Could may be part of the issue with the OP, if they are still around...........not holding breath.
