So far, seven of the twelve ME2 squadmates are accounted for. Tali and Garrus are confirmed full squad. Zaeed and Kasumi are confirmed as not on squad. Thane is confirmed as temporary. Legion and Mordin are heavily implied to be temporary--I can't imagine BW saying "Yeah, these old characters we've shown repeatedly are actually suadmates. So that leaves Samara, Jacob, Miranda, Grunt, and Jack. Samara I discount because Liara has similar powers and a nearly identical alternate appearance, not to mention the whole Morinth thing. So, four choices for a returning ME2 squad member. I'm wonder if we'll get any. There will be more new characters coming, and I welcome that. But I'm starting teel like a fan of the wrong cast.

Dunno. The thing is: you can win ME2 with most of your squadmates in the SM getting KIA. That also includes Tali and Garrus - both confirmed as permament squadmates.

The truth is: ALL ME2-squadmates are "expendable" - except Joker. You just need two (or even one?) to get back alive for a valid savegame you can use in ME3. So most of the guys of ME2 won't play a story relevant role in ME3. Yeah, the deaths of Tali and Legion could make it impossible to unite Quarians and Geth in ME3 (if that part is included). Guess you won't be able to make Turians to full allies without Garrus and/or an alive Council. Who knows?

What about Jacob? He's a nice guy and make his appearance. I don't believe he'll make it into permanent squad, but maybe he'll play a bigger role. Same for Miranda, but I hope for more in her case. Grunt? If he survives he'll take place next to Wrex - on Tuchanka I believe. Jack? She'll come back. With fuzzy hair and a nicer attitude. Nothing more known. However, I don't believe any of them will become full squadmembers. Dunno why, but they all bear the potential to become important "parallel story arcs". Something that I hope & expect for Liara, but afaik she'll return to Shepard.

Thane may well be temporary but was that confirmed by bioware or is this reference to a leaked magazine article that stated so?
Just because he doesn't join the crew on that mission, doesn't mean he may not join the crew at a different point in the game...just trying to be optimistic.

I think it's likely that they will be sidelined to an extent, especially those that were not LI characters. I guess that there's more expectation to have solid conclusion of the romance choices than the stories of the non LI characters.

The people that I can see as squadmembers from ME2 are:

Legion, Mordin, Grunt, Miranda, Jack

then you choose maybe 2 or 3 out of that. I doubt they will be sidelined. Jacob, Samara, and  the DLC might be but these people definately won't.

Let me consult my crystal ball: it says "reply hazy, ask again later".

Seriously, does anyone think that the rest of us have access to information that others' don't?

I'm actually wondering just how permanent "permanent" squad members are.

The closer we're getting to release the more it looks like this is the case, especially when you add biowares non answers or refusal to speak when questioned on this issue.

Everytime they're pushed or pressed regarding squadmates they keep trotting out the same lines, can't say anything because it spoils the story, which while this may be true does bear a striking resembelance to how they answered questions regarding Wrex,Ash and Kaiden during the same point in me2's development.

Almost up to release we got pretty much the same responses, while at the same time they revealed things like Shepard dying, needing to gather a force of specialists for a sucide mission etc, etc.

When you look at what info has been revealed so far regarding me3 and compare it to a simple confirmation that X or Y are in your squad then the whole spoiling the storyline excuse just doesn't wash.

After all knowing some of the facts like the return of the VS and that irrespective of either how you felt about cerberus or whether or not you handed over the base to them, the outcome is pretty much the same, cerberus are after you and they got their hands on collector base tech, then would a confirmation that yes if alive Miranda would be recruitable as a full time member of you squad spoil the storyline anymore than what we already know.

Call me a pessimist but i just can't shake the feeling that the reason they refuse to speak on this is exactly the same reason they waited so long to tell us Wrex, Ash/Kaiden would all be getting cool cameo's, simply because they don't want to deal with the backlash until closer to relase.

Well, they're already getting the multiplayer backlash, so now would be the perfect time.

I think the worst we can expect is something like what Wrex got. They aren't going to pull a Horizon again.

Or they get a paddlin'.

Given how they're expendable, this seems likely. Although I admit that I'd much rather see ME2 squadmates than new ones.

Dunno.  I'm only expecting, like, four new squaddies.  Given the returing characters and smaller squad size and all.

Garrus and Tali are "expendable". And they're coming back, luckily.

I'm hoping for Vega to be the one and only, and quite frankly I don't even like him being there.

I've always thought of Mass Effect squadmates as falling into one of three categories: Miranda, Garrus, and "other."

Eh, I like Vega so far.  But we're also getting that mysterious DLC guy, and probably another female squadmate as an alternative to Vega, and I'm pulling for a batarian.

I can understand you not wanting to add to the pile, but I thought there was no way in hell Wrex could be topped.  And then suddenly Mordin and Legion.

Heh, but I'm losing hope for Miranda. We've already got two humans, and I'm expecting a new human female.

I honestly never got the Wrex love. I actually marginally like Grunt better. Though I admit to not, as a rule, being fond of krogan (Charr is an exception).

Realistically put; Do you think that Bioware would invest a great deal of time and effort, to grant one character a vital/significant role within the story, if he/she is dead..? All characters in Mass Effect 2, as squad-members, as much as I dislike, will get minor roles. ( Like Garrus, for example.. All the game he was in the middle of some calibrations, and his relevance was almost zero, he just filled the background and pleased the fans from the first game. )

Only way for a character in Mass Effect 2, to play a substantial role in Mass Effect 3 is trough a potential retcon, case the player in question decided to whack him. Obviously, retcons are never good, however Bioware done it plenty of times in their games ( Lately.. )

Personally, I think Vega is Bioware's apology for Jacob.

Honestly Miranda seems too important to be left out in my opinion.

And Miranda was least likely to be killed in the Suicide Mission.
