I was wondering if I could get some help with something...

I am planning on buying an Alienware laptop from Dell, and I wanted to know if I could get some input on what the best configuration for the ultimate gaming PC would be (I'd especially like the opinion of those of you that mod or develop games for fun or for a living).

Thoughts? Opinions? Pointers?

Thanks!Posted Image

I would get a comfy leather recliner and surround sound to go along with it. For the PC, I think you should wire it to a plasma TV and get a Xbox 360 controller attachment.

(I know nothing about compooters )

Gaming laptops are a myth. Get a normal PC. What's your budget?

It is cheaper to buy a non-gaming laptop ($300-400) + build your own gaming desktop ($600-800).

However, if you need a laptop for portability, you can find a decent gaming laptop for around $1000-1300.

Check out some of the models sold via XoticPC.com: http://www.xoticpc.c...-118_96_98.html

In general, try to get something with the following criteria:

1920x1080 or 1600x900 display
Nvidia 445m, 360m, 460m, 555m, 285m, 560m or better
AMD 5830m, 5850m, 5870m, 6770m, 6850m, 6950m or better
Sandy Bridge quad core mobile CPU (if possible)
8GB RAM
HDMI port (pretty standard these days)
(if your budget is high enough, you might want to get an SSD as well to reduce load times and boot/shutdown times)

Any of the NVIDIA or AMD mobile graphics cards listed above can deliver playable framerates at 1920x1080 for most games. If you go with 1600x900 display, you can drop down a step or two to get a laptop with lower tier GPU.

This. If you want high performance on most games, get a desktop. What is your budget btw? Also I can tell that because you're considering buying an Alienware, you're likely relatively new to PC gaming. In any case, don't buy from Alienware, you'll be ripped off. In July I myself built a £1200 gaming PC which runs all high performance games I know of on top res and settings, the Alienware equivalent (similar specs) costed a lot more.

I thought Alienware was supposed to be top of the line for a gaming PC. I have a few friends who have them and they love the performance, and every review I've ever read gives high marks to Alienware.

Most of my gaming has always been done on consoles... right now I play on PS3. The last real game I played on PC was Diablo 1 and that was over 9 years ago... this computer I am using now is over 10 years old and can't handle the PC games that are out now.  I have so much stuff on this PC that I don't want to get rid of it and it's such a pain to move everyhting over to a new PC that I decided to just get a laptop.

I was planning on spending around $3,000. for the new PC. What ever I get will have to last me for quite a long time.

If you're American and are able to put a PC together yourself, you could get a pretty high level Gaming desktop and laptop for $3000.

Something like this

+ parts for a DIY for ~$1300

Is easily possible.

LOL!  I play on my PS3 on a 47" HD Flat screen... no surround sound though.  I'm actually thinking about getting an XBox 360 as well, for the spare bedroom... 'course I'll need another flat screen. Maybe I can talk my Hubby into getting that plasma...Posted Image

As much as I like playing on consoles... you can't beat the graphics on a PC game - plus you can mod. Can't mod with consoles.Posted Image

There is no denying that Alienware does have some powerful laptops but you have to consider the price. Gaming laptops are great and all but you can't upgrade them with newer hardware and have to pay much much more and with a desktop not really. In another thread I even posted a great $400-$500 build.

I have one. Don't do it. 2 weeks after purchase I started having problems. 10 months later I'm still getting the run around from their tech support people in Costa Rica.

I bought an alienware for around 3000.

M17x R3

The video card is Radeon HD 6970m and I have an i7-2720QM.

To put it in perspective: I can run Starcraft II, Mass Effect 2, and pretty much any other game I have on maxed out settings, but The Witcher 2 slows down if I turn on any of VSync, SSAO, Ubersampling, Motion Blur, or Anti Aliasing maxed out, the game runs slow. And without VSynce there is some screen tearing during cutscenes.

It could be the drivers and you might be better off with the Nvidia card.

But I checked it more recently and they have a better video card. I also found out, I don't need this 1.5 Terabyte hard drive configuration, I would have been fine with a 250 or 500 single hard drive.

I just thought I'd have all these movies and stuff, but I am not even coming close.

Holy sh*t, 3000 bucks? you could get the ab-so-f*cking-lute best build on the market for 3000 bucks. Don't buy Alienware, whatever you do.

Bah, go 1920x1200 or 1680x1050. The switch to 16:9 from 16:10 is a crime a tell you, a crime.

Well, I am an American... but I would have no clue how to build my own PC.  I would rather pay someone to do that for me.

So other than the problem with the drivers, you haven't had any other issues or concerns with your Alienware?

With $3000 you can build a monster setup for 3D and/or eyefinity Nvidia surrond gaming and probably still have money left over for some great 7.1 speakers and expensive sound card.

3000$ for that? Laptops are seriously overpriced...

(219$) i5-2500K = http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115072
(329$) HD6970 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102918
(50$) 2x4GB http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820231310
(160$) ASRock P67 Extreme4 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813157229
(134$) Corsair PSU 850W http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817139009
(85$) WD 1TB (SSD's are still too expensive) http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822136284
(100$) Some awesome Antec case http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811129021
(68$) Blu-Ray http://www.newegg.co...N82E16827135247

Total: 1145$ (probably could be 1000$, but I'm too lazy to find better prices)

+ Some good 24 LCD: 179$ http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824236052

= 1324$

If that's not enough for you, buy HD6990/GTX590 instead (or another HD6970 for CrossFireX). There is absolutely no game in this universe that can't be maxed with this monster.

There is really no need to spend $3,000.

The most powerful gaming laptop will only cost around $2,000 max, and I'm talking about something with dual high end graphics cards like 580m's, 485m's, 6990m's, etc. in crossfire/SLI configuration. IMO unless you are dead set on running Metro2033/Crysis/Witcher 2 completely maxed out, dual cards are overkill for a laptop.

You only need a decent single GPU to run most games well at 1080p and any laptop with dual graphics cards is going to be end up being more of a desktop replacement, rather heavy and inconvenient to carry around.

My advice would be to spend $1500-1800 on a laptop with 1080p display, NVIDIA 560m, AMD 6950m, 6970m, or better and i7-2760qm, i7-2860qm or i7-2960xm processor.

If you want to spend a little extra, get a decent SSD. It won't improve the gaming experience much except for loading times, but it will make all your apps run faster and drastically reduce bootup/shutdown times.
