I just picked up an Asus G74sx.

17 inch screen at 1600x900 display.
Intel i7 QM2630 @ 2.00 Ghz (turbo to 2.90gHz)
8 GB Ram (upgradeable to 16)
1 TB HD
Nvidia 560m

$1050.

Since your in the US, check out Best Buy. You don't need to spend $3000 on a laptop.

I guess your problem is you don't know how to build one. But if you do know someone who knows anything about PCs, you should definitely get them to do it for you.

I haven't bought anything from Alienware, but $3,000 will buy you the best stuff on the market, like Ringo said.

Do you have to have a laptop? You could have two desktops. Your gaming one could be totally killer for $1,500, forget $3,000.

Case  Cooler Master HAF932 - $140
Power Supply Corsair 750HX - $150
CPU   Intel i7-2600k - $315
Heatsink  Noctua 6 NH-D14 - $86
Motherboard ASUS Z68 P8Z68-V PRO - $200
Memory  8GB G.Skill DDR3 12800 - $63
Graphics Card
XFX 6970 2GB OR EVGA GTX 570 - $350 / $330
Hard DriveWestern Digital 1TB Caviar Black - $80
SSD
  Intel 510 Series 120 GB (Review) - $310
OR
OCZ 120 GB Vertex 3 (Review) - $219
DVD Asus 24X SATA DVD+/-RW - $19

All for $1602-$1712

Removing the Solid State Drives (SSD) will save you a couple of hundred also. Doesn't do anything for games performance wise just your system will load faster also you can find 3TB harddrives easily. You can ask any computer store to build it for you doesn't take long I'd assume considering they run a shop. Also if you care about sound quality this is what I recommend. Don't underestimate a excellent sound system for your gaming it really adds a lot especially when devs put a lot of time into it like any Dice game.

Sound Card ASUS Xonar Essence $158
Speakers Logitech Z906 5.1 $347

As a matter of fact I just got an email from Micro Center (kind of like Best Buy) that they have 3TB hard drives for...I think it was $130.

It was a 3TB Western Digital Caviar Green hard drive for $199.99.

So other than the problem with the drivers, you haven't had any other issues or concerns with your Alienware?

Not really.  And apparently a couple months ago drivers for my video card were released and since downloading them, The Witcher 2 runs fine on Ultra minus Uber Sampling and my HDMI In scaling was fixed.

I realize I may have "overpaid", but I wanted a laptop that looks nice and I like the way the Alienware laptops look.  I also needed a laptop because I am currently in the army and I wanted something I could take with me wherever.

I also realize I made a mistake with the hard drive configuration, realized i don't need 1 TB and that made a huge impact on the price.  And just a month or two after, the 18X was announced.

I also got a Blu-Ray drive.  And the HDMI In port to me is invaluable.

Yes, that is my problem. I don't know how to build a PC, so I figured it would be better to get a PC from a company that I have always dealt with (Dell), and since their Alienware line is supposed to be one of the best for gaming (at least that is what I have always read and heard), I figured that would be the way to go.

The only reason I thought about getting a laptop, was so that I could bring it into any room in my home, or bring it with me if I ever went away for a few days.

I'm getting the feeling from everyone here, that I would be better of going to a local computer store and let them build me one from scratch. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to go to a few stores, tell them what I am looking for and see what they say I should get- and how much they would charge. It would be great if I don't have to spend $3000... I'm sure my hubby would be grateful if I didn't.

Thanks to everyone for all your tips and help. I appreciate it!

Well most computer shops I know of let you just bring the parts and they assemble it. The build I posted is really great.

If you want to go with a desktop instead of a laptop, $600-800 is all you need in order to buy all components necessary for a very powerful gaming desktop for running games at decent framerates at 1920x1080 or 1920x1200.

If you want to use multiple monitors or extreme resolution gaming, it will be a bit more expensive for top of the line graphics cards. These top of the line graphics cards are overkill and unnecessary if you only plan to run games at 1080p or 1200p.

Not sure what your local shop would charge to assemble this, but you can find all the components you need on http://www.newegg.com, tigerdirect or amazon at quite reasonable prices (certainly less than $1000).

If you need to go with a laptop for portability reasons, you should be able to acquire a top of the line gaming laptop for around $1500 or less.
