It is important to note that the system is entirely optional and just another way players can have control over your game experience – it is still possible to achieve the optimal, complete ending of the game in Mass Effect 3 through single-player alone.

Quoted for emphasis. I was about to flip out, too, until I read that. It seems a number of poster have lost that ability so I'm attempting to point it out to them.

And you and many others are missing the point...

Will it affect any dialogue, cinematics, endings or places plus other such things other than resources if do not play the MP? It has nothing to do with "optimal" ending which is one ending of vast amount promised to be in game and not limited to just ending as in will it affect anything in the main story other than resources?

The rebranding of EA2D as BioWare San Francisco is starting to make a lot more sense now.

Sounds great. I hope two player is an option, multiplayer 'stranger-danger' does scare me a bit as I'm quite old.

I am...intrigued.

Still got a lot of questions about how this will be implemented and how it affects the SP campaign (major concerns have been alleviated there but there's still some gritty details I'm curious about), but intrigued nonetheless. I will actually consider playing the MP now.

Which characters can I play in co-op multiplayer? Can I play as Commander Shepard?

  • Commander Shepard’s part in the war will take place in the single-player campaign, as will that of other beloved characters in the franchise such as Garrus, Ashley, and Liara…these characters do not appear in the multiplayer missions. In multiplayer, players will create custom characters to fight on different and unique fronts in the war. This will include the ability to play as favorites like Turians, Krogans, Asari and more… each with their own unique set of abilities.

I just started foaming at the mouth.

According to the dev's on Twitter, the game is 30+ hours long, so I shall assume 25.

25 is pretty good. A complete playthrough of ME1 takes 25 hours or so. ME2 being closer to 30 hours.

Question for the devs (ask this on Twitter): has both Montreal AND Edmonton worked together for previous Mass Effect titles, or just Edmonton? Because if it the former, that means SP isn't being compromised at all.

Thanks. Personally, I think everyone that has to deal with fan expectations and these boards deserve medals. If it were me, I think I would require therapy.

I have moderator experience for another franchise and I can safely say we do drink a bit sometimes to ease the pain. :P

And well earned, I'm sure.

Entirely optional, good good.
Not messing with SP completion, good good.

Amazing! Sounds like great fun! And I'm so glad you brought up single-player, that was one of my main concerns.
The only thing that is missing is the ability to play locally :( I sure hope my poor internet connection is up to the task!

This is EXACTLY what I wanted from multiplayer if it was going to be included: a standalone campaign (with some tie-ins to the main story) for co-op play. I have full faith in both the single player campaign and the multiplayer now. Looking forward to more info soon!

I like the info, really, I do- the fact that it optionally helps single player is awesome, and this is probably the best way to use multi in ME.

That said, I do take more offense to the way questions were dodged.

Casey Hudson, in an interview I heard TODAY from E3- "Multiplayer didn't fit./ We couldn't get it to work right.", etc

Clearly, there is SOMETHING about that statement that was false. Lying through omission is enough for obstruction of justice in court. While this IS a video game and I'm happy to say it;s not as serious or anything, just pointing out how this was handled was shady, at the least.

Still, I repeat my enthusiasm for the material announced.

What the heck did you think this was going to be? I've thought this fairly obvious since the official announcement.

Hi Everyone

Today BioWare and the Mass Effect 3 team are very pleased to announce 4 player co-op multiplayer missions and the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system for Mass Effect 3 on the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

4 player co-op multiplayer

Join your friends in the all-out galactic war to take Earth back. The universe of Mass Effect expands with the addition of new co-op multiplayer missions, playable over Xbox Live, PSN and PC internet. Players can choose from a variety of classes and races, form an elite Special Forces squad, and combine their weapons, powers and abilities to devastating effect as they fight together to liberate key territories from enemy control. Success in multi-player will have a direct impact on the outcome of the single player campaign, giving players an alternative method of achieving ultimate victory against the greatest threat mankind – and the entire galaxy – has ever faced.

Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War

As a bonus to the campaign, BioWare is introducing the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system, a new way for players to manage and experience the galactic war from multiple fronts, including a new 4-player co-op mode. The key to saving the galaxy is the “Galactic Readiness” level, measured by Commander Shepard’s ability to apply
every possible asset – people, weapons, resources, armies, fleets – in the final battle against the Reapers. Players can impact their game’s Galactic Readiness level in multiple ways via the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system, including multiplayer. Other platforms and interfaces will be announced in the coming months. It is important to note that the system is entirely optional and just another way players can have control over your game experience – it is still possible to achieve the optimal, complete ending of the game in Mass Effect 3 through single-player alone.

Hmm, let's see how you feel when you get to the end of ME3 and all the Quarians die (or whatever) and you discover that to save them you had to either play co-op or scan another 40 planets for minerals in SP.

Wait, am I reading this right? The "galactic readiness" thing in the SP campaign will be determined by some MP "Galaxy at War" feature?

(goes back and reads OP again)

I *did* read it right! Holy crap, BW, way to fook it right up. This will be interesting...

And yet you still apparently missed the part where readiness isn't solely determined by the MP component, which is entirely uneeded to achieve the maximum, thus allowing you to ignore it entirely if you so choose.

Uhuh. You also don't "need" a harvard education to get a good job, but it helps.

Yeah, and?  It's still not the one, true, and only way to get a good job.  And if you factor in the cost, which is rather substantial, it's not even necessarily optimal.  Try another analogy.  This one ain't workin'.

main thing I want to know is with the MP component does that mean no chance of us being able to mod the game?

Do you mind sharing those tears? I'm a bit parched right now.

The implementation of co-op sounds interesting, and...it is completely optional. As long as the single-player campaign itself has roughly the same amount of time as ME2 did, then I'm fine with the new addition.

Keep believing that there...  Keep believing that.

Sorry but this is a bad idea and I just feel it is going to mess up the game, through bugs, being rushed, or many other reasons.  Yeah, I don't have good feelings about this at all and I am not quick to fall for the PR they rushed out to quell the anger.

What I said is that IF the single-player campaign has the same amount of time as ME2 did, THEN I'm fine with that. Maybe you missed the whole IF/THEN construction there. If the single-player campaign gets short shrift, then I will not be a happy camper. See that? There's another IF/THEN!

That being said, I also don't view co-op as the end of the world. There are plenty of games where multiplayer has enhanced my gaming experience like Portal 2 in which the co-op is, in my opinion, innovative and complements the main story. The single-player campaign was also strong. Meanwhile, you can go be irrational and cry in the corner and bemoan your fate or whatever it is you're doing in here.
