To put it simply, because it's a lot more time spent away from the single player than romances are time spent from other story aspects. This has been a story & character driven game since the beginning. You not liking one aspect of the story is perfectly valid, but this is man hours spent coding, writing, building models & doing animations for something that is NOT part of that story. This is them spending time and resources on something that isn't needed.

But who decides what is "needed" in a game and what isn't? As I said earlier, I think romances aren't needed, but I'm under no illusion they'll remove them. And how do you know the multiplayer will not be part of the story? Hasn't Bioware already said exactly the opposite?

ReverendSID wrote...
It basically feels like nothing but a money grab. I realise that they're a business and they want to make as much money as possible from their games. But this feels like an attempt to grab sales from the 12 year olds who won't buy a game unless it's got multiplayer so they can curse at people and pretend they're baddass. In other words, CoD's main player base.

Uh huh. And I think the romances were a money grab toward western otakus of Dating Sim games. Still, though, I can accept it. Why can't you? In the end you're just complaining that Bioware is catering to fans with tastes that differ from your own. And no, I don't believe MP will negatively affect the SP, so don't bother trying that retort.

ReverendSID wrote...
Now as it stands, I'm still planning on buying the game because I loved the first two, but this announcement, coupled with the Kinect bull**** at E3, has seriously lowered my expectations as far as quality.

The one thing I will say is this - NO MP ACHIEVEMENTS! If you're gonna tack a pointless MP component onto a single player game, don't make me play it!

There'll almost certainly be MP achievements due to the incentive they provide. I think a major reason for the failure of Dead Space 2's MP was there were no MP-related achievements, so many gamers had little incentive to play it (plus it just wasn't that fun). And if you're so concerned about achievements, then bite the bullet and jump into Xbox Live. Cry me a freaking river.<_<

I find that hard to believe. I've read through most of this thread, and I don't remember seeing any sceptics saying anything along the lines of  "Unless it has bots, I don't like it!" They were always opposed to MP in general, and the way they said it usually implied they hated it unconditionally.

I have also been following this thread since about page 20 or something and I'm well aware of the general overtone. It seems to me that most of the critics are just anti-multplayer, they don't know why, they just hate it!

And the reason they're up in arms is because NO one has bothered to put forward a suggestion that could placate them. All it would have required was for one senior Bioware official to say "..but hey don;t worry folks, we recognise that 'Mass Effect' has attracted a lot of disenfranched ex-multiplayer types who like to stay well away. But we don;t want you to miss out on a scrap of content so we're going to implement an AI option where you can substitute RL squad mates for AI squad mate... in effect, ADDING additional single player content to what is surely going to be the greatest episode in this awesome saga so far!"

There see? But peopel are wondering why no one thought to implement such a compromise.. it smacks of EA trying to impose an ultimatum that requires everyone to capitulate to the God's of MP and social interaction.

Well said. And I think you're right. In fact, everything I've heard about the game that has made me even a little uneasy (melee combat, Kinect, and now MP) feels like EA's influence.

Am going to be frank about this.

I will NOT tolerate any shape or form of MP in ME3 whatsoever. Especially sodding co-op.

Congrats Bioware. You have just lost 5 N7 pre-orders and lost a loyal fan.

SO UP YOURS!

thnx for registering to share you thoughts, but we dont care about them

Thanks man, yeah... it just seems so out of character considering Bioware's reputation.

Quite possibly... I never said my opinion was anything more than conjecture.

It really boggles my mind that some people are so anti-multiplayer/co-op that they cancel orders for games that they liked before.

It just seems so chilidish to me. If you dont like that mode, then dont play the mode and just stick to the single player.

Some people are just.......odd.

No, I won't. That's the exact point. If I wanted a multiplayer game, I'd buy a multiplayer game. Two games, totally single player. I expect the third game in the series to be the same. That's why I was pissed when Brotherhood announced Multiplayer, and that's why I'm pissed now. I don't want to play this game with other people, this is supposed to be a story I can imerse myself in to GET AWAY from other people!

Now, you might be right about the lack of achievements in Dead Space 2, but on the other hand, that lack provided me an incentive to buy the game even after the announcement that there would be multiplayer. But even still, I tried it. Once. It was crap, it was pointless, and it was tacked on as an afterthought. Now this mode doesn't seem like an afterthought, but it still doesn't sound like something I want to play.

Why?

Are Games developers not allowed to try new things? Are they not allowed to try to improve their games? Are they not allowed to evolve?

Must they keep doing the same things over and over again, stagnate rather than evolve their designs?

Urgh, some people....

You don't have to it is OPTONAL.<_< And it is possible to achieve the optimal story line by just playing by yourself. So you don't have to play CO-OP at all if you don't want to.

If you already have a winning formula, why change the ingredients? If you want to 'test the waters', why not try a new product and apply your new secret formula to that?

Here are my main concerns:
How can it be optional if it influences SP

Why do people seem to think "optional" is the same as "has absolutely no effect on anything else"? It's optional because you don't need to do it. It is not required.  There are non-MP means to get the same results.  Thus, optional.

It's funny, given BioWare's past and first game, which had multiplayer.

People saying that they're going out of style. Ha.

Brotherhood is pretty much the best example of how to add MP to an SP game series. Barely any AC fan I know of was disappointed by the SP and the MP was well-crafted in its own right. If Bioware is looking to other games as models, they should look to this one.

And you don't want to play it with other people? Well, guess what: YOU. DON'T .HAVE. TO! It's still the same SP game, made by the same team, and the game will retail for the same price. If you went to a restaurant and ordered a steak, and found the steak came with a free, optional side-order of your choice, would you complain the steak was ruined?

Since you've made it clear you're prejudiced against MP, I don't know what they could do to make it something you'd want to play.

Oh, by the way, thanks for unintentionally confirming my analogy by using the same arguments I made against romance

I don't think anyone's suggesting that Bioware hasn't dabbled in MP before, we're suggesting that their commitment to single player games is waning - a dubious sign of things to come and somewhat coincidental in view of EA's announcements regarding multiplayer gaming.
