To put it simply, because it's a lot more time spent away from the single player than romances are time spent from other story aspects. This has been a story & character driven game since the beginning. You not liking one aspect of the story is perfectly valid, but this is man hours spent coding, writing, building models & doing animations for something that is NOT part of that story. This is them spending time and resources on something that isn't needed.
But who decides what is "needed" in a game and what isn't? As I said earlier, I think romances aren't needed, but I'm under no illusion they'll remove them. And how do you know the multiplayer will not be part of the story? Hasn't Bioware already said exactly the opposite?

It basically feels like nothing but a money grab. I realise that they're a business and they want to make as much money as possible from their games. But this feels like an attempt to grab sales from the 12 year olds who won't buy a game unless it's got multiplayer so they can curse at people and pretend they're baddass. In other words, CoD's main player base.
Uh huh. And I think the romances were a money grab toward western otakus of Dating Sim games. Still, though, I can accept it. Why can't you? In the end you're just complaining that Bioware is catering to fans with tastes that differ from your own. And no, I don't believe MP will negatively affect the SP, so don't bother trying that retort.

Now as it stands, I'm still planning on buying the game because I loved the first two, but this announcement, coupled with the Kinect bull**** at E3, has seriously lowered my expectations as far as quality.
The one thing I will say is this - NO MP ACHIEVEMENTS! If you're gonna tack a pointless MP component onto a single player game, don't make me play it!
There'll almost certainly be MP achievements due to the incentive they provide. I think a major reason for the failure of Dead Space 2's MP was there were no MP-related achievements, so many gamers had little incentive to play it (plus it just wasn't that fun). And if you're so concerned about achievements, then bite the bullet and jump into Xbox Live. Cry me a freaking river.<_<
