I know everyone has a lot of questions about the 4 player co-op system and the Mass Effect: Galaxies at War system, but I am all out of answers currently. (I was only able to get what I gave in the op because Jesse Houston works like a dog and was actually working on Thanksgiving and Nick Clifford ditto without the Thanksgiving).

There are more answers to come. I know Casey will be doing a special video later this week addressing people's concerns and there is lots more info on Mass Effect: Galaxies at War and ME3 co-op multiplay, as well as lots of information on the single player game still to come.

Todays announcement is but the start of information on these topics with much more still to come. :)

In other words, we'll detail everything once we've suckered you into buying the game.

Bioware,

For future reference, since you have obviously made the design choice for this game and it is too late to change it...  I do not want to play multiplayer.  I find the experience to be unpleasant, and it is not something that I look for in my games.  I am sure that I am not alone in this sentiment.  You are a game company that produces story
based RPGs.  This is a genera that has been and hopefully will continue to be single player.  By including a multiplayer mode that has an effect on the single player campaign you have alienated me from this game.  You have also diminished the longevity of the title.  Mass Effect 1 & 2 will be infinitely repayable for as long as games continue to be a medium of artistic expression; however, once you include multiplayer as a major feature of the game that replayability is drastically shortened.  How long do you expect to keep the multiplayer servers active?  Two years?  Five?  What about when I feel like playing this game ten years down the road and aspects of it are cut off from me because the servers are shut down and the game no longer supports them .  Poor form Bioware.  I am extremely disappointed.

What if I am not good at / do not like multiplayer? Will my readiness rating go down?

  • ME3 is a story about a war against overwhelming force where the most you can hope for us survival. The more you do to fight that war, the more you can change that story into a more optimistic one. You can reach the highest levels of success in the single player experience alone, but Galaxy at War gives you alternative ways to get there. It’s about choice, and allowing players to find their own ways to stay immersed in the Mass Effect universe.

I hope it's not super tedious doing it the SP way compared to finding someone to MP with.

No, in other words, it's @#$%ing Thanksgiving in Canada where they all happen to live and have, like, families and stuff, so you're lucky you got as much as you did today.

Nah I will find out prior to handing them my money because unlike being burned with DA2 hands off approach I took to information, with ME3 I have no intention of buying unless my concerns get answered prior.

I love how much butthurt is on this forum. CO OP is an ALTERNATIVE method. Nobody is making you play it. If you think it will "ruin" the single player: don't play it. Don't ruin the experience for the rest of us by how the game is "ruined". Next time, think before you post something and process the information first.

I do recall seeing "Conflict Zone" in the Galaxy Map footage from E3, by the way. But I'm pretty sure that was from the single player, so I don't know..

Um, how do you figure?  If it just makes some other non-central SP task optional (say, whatever the equivalent of scanning is), then I don't see how it matters in the least.

Riiight. An equivalent of planet-scanning, the most universally hated feature of ME2, being forced on SP ME3 players who don't want co-op, doesn't matter in the least?

If it's not attached to additional content like dialogue and cutscenes, then, no, it doesn't matter in the least.

I beg to differ. If you don't mind it, great for you, but I do.

didymos1120 wrote...

You can do whichever one you dislike least. Also, you seem to think "equivalent" means "exactly like in all respects".

Actually I meant "exactly like it in one respect: it's mind-numbing padding". I don't care whether the mind-numbing padding is blue or green, whether I have to connect the dots, watch a needle twitch, play match the symbols or whatever other boring crap BW have in store for us this time. If it's mind-numbing, then it's punishment for not playing co-op.

But that's the thing though, the opinion really does apply. Its actually a fairly common experience in gaming. I think its kind of evident from the success of games like Portal, or even a longer running game like Splinter Cell, that co-op done right is (for most people) fun.

Given that Mass Effect's gameplay already has the player relying on AI teammates that they can't directly control anyway, it seems reasonable that they would attempt to integrate co-op into this game, given that it for a lot of gamers it is a positive experience.

Those are all games I've specifically avoided because of the MP.

And you know what? I don't really give a rat's ass if other people like it or not.

I don't, so don't force it on me. Release two versions - one with the MP content altered so it can be played through with SP. Or release the MP as separate content.

I'm tired of my gaming experience being ruined because COD/Gears dudebro shooter fans won't buy a game until it has that "online MP" bullet point on it.

Right. Because the co-op was the selling point for me. <_<

They've confirmed that ME3 is as long as ME2, if not longer. They've said that you don't have to play the multiplayer.

If that isn't enough, don't buy the game.

I was paintballing one time and got hit with old, stale paintballs. It really hurt and it broke the skin, I had to go home afterwards for some bandages because the blood was starting to soak through my clothes a little, we never found out who was using those paintballs unfortunately. True story.

multiplayer sucks! paintball is multiplayer! paintball exists in real life, therefore real life sucks! i've invested a lot of time in keeping this life singleplayer (insert basement dwelling reference)! i hate you allah/buddha/jesus...or mum for ruining what should have been a perfectly good single player experience!

Is there is a way to play this campaign by yourself with AI controlled party members, or is there is a way to play split screen co-op with someone on the same console?

I would love to have AI allies if I'm playing the co-op offline or solo.

You don't know the details of how the system will work or its actual impact on the SP game. People like to be make informed choices on what to spend money on and even more so these days and this is no different. You just have a general statement about it with no details and if wish t buy out of blind faith thats your choice but others choose to buy things based on those details so far lacking.

Well, I'm operating under the assumption that some sort of repetitive and ultimately tedious task is more or less inevitable.  But here's a question:  you obviously don't like the coop thing, so isn't that just a different form of mind-numbing padding from your POV? Six of one, half a dozen of the other?

Did anyone watch Hart of Dixie? The mayor and the other dude (dont know his name) were playing Mass Effect 3, probably the demo. But they talked as if they were about to play co-op but only against each other? thoughts...

I'm lost. Link?

Hart of Dixie the TV show on The CW. There is a scene in it where 2 of the charachters are playing ME3. It seems to be co-op at first but when the camera pans to the tv screen Shepard is shown in what seems to be the SP demo.

Could Bioware perhaps answer if elements of the Galaxy at War system can be played single player?

As in, Galaxy at war isn't entirely multiplayer?
