For me, Mark of the Assassin had a very nice balance of story and combat with the party and stealth sections serving as great change-ups in the game play without being too long as to drag-on (pun intended).
On the topic of the loot scaling to your level when you receive it, I hated it in oblivion and I hate it here. Either make the loot level up with you or make sure everyone receives it at it's maximum potential. Or in future games/dlc, input some sort smithing feature where you can improve the loot as you grow stronger.
For the level design and environments in MotA, give those people a raise, and then another raise, and then a bonus. I loved the environments (especially the hunting grounds). It felt especially vibrant and grand in comparison to the main game's seemingly claustrophobic and sometimes bland environments. I'm sick of brown and yellow in my games, seeing all those greens and blues was very nice. Thank you for the wonderful DLC, keep it up!

I liked MotA, but I didn't enjoy the puzzles too much. Luckily, they can be skipped, so they're not forced on me on consecutive playthroughs.

It was also nice to see a different environment than same old Kirkwall, would love to see more in future DLC (if there will be any).

MotA Impressions after One Playthrough

Environments
I liked MotA's environments much more than DA2's, particularly the hunting grounds.

Combat Banter

I noticed a few cases of this and thought it was cool

1) Hawke asking if they were keeping count of kills.   I like the idea of telling story with combat.  In Two Towers, there's an ongoing banter between Legolas and Gimli that adds to the combat scenes.  Seeing that sort of things among companions in Dragon Age is cool.  There was only a tiny bit here, but it's something I'd like to see more of.

2) Aveline making a suggestion about what to do in the final fight.   As it turns out Aveline's suggestion was more setup for a cinematic than it was a suggestion you could actually act on during the fight.  So setting up a cinematic was cool.  However, being able to actually do something with a party member suggestion in the gameplay would be cooler.

(Taking the idea of banter during gameplay further, I'd  also like to be able to click on companions during puzzles and ask them for their thoughs, even if they're entirely unhelpful.  Though I'd figure Merrill should be helpful, Isabela more than you'd expect and Aveline maybe not at all.)

Stealth
I thought the stealth poriton was fun, and I like having the option to skip combat when it makes sense. One thing I liked was that you had to watch out for shadows.  If stealth makes you pay attention to and react to the environment that's a good thing.  Also, the ability to distract and use non-lethal force and eavesdrop is cool.  I think it'd be cool if eavesdropping could give you ideas on future challenges you might have--so intelligence gathering that pays off.  I didn't notice anything like that here, but it seems like it would fit in.  One thing I'm skeptical about is the hard split between stealth and non-stealth.  It seems I should be able to switch in and out at will rather than being locked in after a story choice.  Maybe my mind could be changed if thre's enough payoff to this sort of bifurcation of gameplay, but I can't foresee what that payoff would be having only played MotA.

I can't really really talk about other stuff in a non-spoilers forum.

It does have an impact on the actual fight, if it hits nobody and goes over the edge it'll "cling" to it allowing you a brief moment of attack without retaliation.

Unorganized steam of consciousness feedback I can remember from my playthrough:

The cutscenes didn't strike my fancy much. The Harlequin looked cool enough in the trailer, not so much in the 'look at my sexy armpit' cutscene. Tallis' intro was too long, could have ended after she jumped down to where Hawke was. I'm not sure what my mage was supposed to be doing in that climactic cutscene, I guess magical flaming jujutsu...

A lot of easy to miss companion/ambient dialog during battle or immediately following a battle or while I'm otherwise in the middle of something. Generally they're a nice touch, but I started to get frustrated missing a bunch of these little comments.

I liked the new environments. The hunting grounds seemed a little clean though. The grass. Kind of like astroturf or something. Good otherwise.

New monsters were neat. Seems odd that we haven't met any ghasts in the many, many caves we've visited previously in DAO and DA2, but alright. I'm interested in learning more about them regardless. Their magic looks ancient.

I'm pretty sure some of the music was new (so I don't know why no one answered my question about that!), which I appreciated and thought quite felt fitting for the DLC.

The puzzles were great. The battles were nicely designed. I didn't like the stealth portion much, partly because their red line of sight didn't match their actual line of sight. I mean yeah, it makes sense that they should see me if I'm practically right in front of them, but the line of sight indicator should be consistent with that. It also seemed kind of silly that getting caught just sent me back to Tallis, "No harm done." What? I was just caught! But alright... I have yet to find out whether rogue Hawkes get any special abilities for this section.

The story was good. A look at the pretensions of Orlesian nobles, I liked that. Tallis slotting herself into the compassion assassin archetype made me groan a little but alright. Qunari, whatever.

The humor was alright, felt like it got a little too self-referential at times. Even though I'm sure I missed a lot of the references even still. But I liked the bit with the servants dissing Goldilocks, and with the *spoiler* inattentively handing the *spoiler* to Tallis wearing a helmet. And some other things probably.

Overall I liked it. I think I liked Legacy better but I liked this too.

I'm not sure why these feedback threads are always created in a "no spoilers"-forum.

Anyway, here is a link to my review of MotA (Spoiler: It has spoilers!):

My feedback in no particular order or structure...

I didn't feel there was really a compelling reason for me to go with Tallis. It seems like the writers knew this as well and decided to have fun with the fact providing no explanation really other than, Tallis is a stranger - you help strangers.

The stealth gameplay was basic but a welcome change of pace from the usual combat. It felt like it dragged on a little too long though. Overall, I liked it and hope we see more things like it in the future.

The garden party was my favorite part of the whole DLC; a nice, comical reprieve.

Color! It was great to see green environments and the bold colors of the Orlesian clothing.

Duke Prosper fight was very well done in my opinion. I loved that there was a tactic to leaving the boss vulnerable and that Bethany alerted me to it.

I liked this dlc, it is fun to play with all companions.. i love the banter between the companions and tried to pair them up specifically for this. Great job bioware, please keep the friendly jibes in future dlc & DA3.
The different terrain made a welcome change from kirkwall, great colours & the scenery was wonderful.
I realy liked the new enemies, Ghasts were a blast, Wyverns were cool.. would have liked more harlequins to fight though.. Once I had worked out a good strategy for the sky worshippers, I enjoyed that battle.. only died once on 1st playthrough.. the end battle was fine, 3 stage fights are always good..
The puzzles were good, not to hard for the vault and 1st 2 colour puzzles. the picture was tougher to figure
but after pondering for an hour (with a grid on a bit of paper) I finally got it.. So great work there...
The stealth, I found to slow for me but I know some friends who liked it.. after 1st play i have opted to fight the guards, but I wouldnt mind if you put it in further games, just not to much of it please.
I was a bit dissapointed with the loot/goodies you picked up as it seemed 95% of it was lower than we already had, but unlike others on this site I liked the new armors/robes fom the fire puzzle.
I do think the party in the garden was fun but wished you had let us have our companions with us, as the jokes/remarks from the likes of Varric/Merril & Isabela could have made it a hundred times better, maybe in the next dlc (wink,wink)..
I did enjoy playing with Tallis, though I did have to change her stats with a makers sigh as she seemed a bit weak to start with..
It was good to learn more about the qun and orlesians,, (Would like them to be the mainstay of DA3)
Unlike others on the forum, my hawke(s) do not hate the qun so I had no problem helping Tallis, My Hawke(s) tend to like helping people (specially nice looking ones).
All in all, my main gripe has been that my LI Merril didnt get a sidequest (Not even a mini one) so therefor no shiny amulet as a prize...doh..did you forget about her????
All in all, an enjoyable DLC, on an even par with Legacy... 8.5/10. keep it up, cant wait for next dlc or expansion of hawkes story..

I think that storywise Legacy fit better overall with Dragon Age however I like variety and for a change of pace this was a great dlc.

Loved the puzzles...though I must say one of them drove me crazy for a while because I stayed up too late playing and wasn't thinking straight at the time.

Loved the humor...one of my favorite moments is Hawke trying to get the guard to let her and Tallis in so they can get the key. I've played twice and laughed hysterically at both options I chose so far ( the bee and the undercooked food)...my bet is the third one which I'll probably get to later today will be just as funny. The bee one where Hawke goes to her knees was particularly funny...seems as though this had more physical humor in it (Tallis calling for the Wyvren was another one...I'm laughing now thinking about it).

Appreciated the fact that the LI's were aknowledged both by clicking on them and through various dialogues throughout the quest...even pursued Tallis to make Hawkes LI jealous and it worked on the LI and on Tallis at the end where she mentions how jealous she is of the LI. Loved that.

The only thing that did not work for me was the stealth...it was fun at first but when I got to a certain part of the game it took me a while to find a way to make it through the guards to get the key. I became frustrated at one point and was ready to strangle Tallis for asking me if I was trying to get caught. I just wanted to take out a sword and start hacking all the guards down. Didn't like being locked into only being able to play it one way. It would be nice if you could assassinate from behind instead of just knocking the guards out.

ETA: My compliments to whoever did Tallis's eyes...awesome job.

Also just played my evil blood mage and found out I didn't have to do any of the stealth at all...after playing it without the stealth I have to say that I like the stealth better than just a quick hash and slash playthrough...still is frustrating in places though.

Yeah, I hated the intro where she's twirling around doing all of this stuff thats not possible in game and then she acts all nonchalant in telling Hawke "Why are you just standing around?'

Well I'll tell you why I'm standing around, Tallis, its because I'm locked in Cutscene World and I can't do anything until we're done showing how amazingly skilled and witty you are!"

Yeah, I noticed this alot too- especially in the hunting grounds where you'd be walking around only to have on banter fire then another right on top of the other one. Or they'd be bantering as you enter into combat. This has been an issue since Origins really.

Its a step up in some regards, but I'm sick of the invisible walls. The whole hunting grounds just reminded me of a golf course- the main tract of land is all nicely groomed and smooth with the trees along the edges.

Depends on what stuff you're talking about. If you mean rolling to an enemy, Rogues do that. If you mean actually using an enemy as a shield, that's something I've been hoping Bioware will implement in some way for DAIII.

Actually, it's part of my idea for the class Specific Execution for DW Rogues. They could grab the enemy, use them as a shield, then slit their throats.

Also, I didn't mind her opening. I liked it. But I do agree that Hawke just standing around when he's being ambushed is odd. Have him at least take down three enemies before she says "what are you waiting for?"

Well bought and beat the DLC today.

One glaring thing for me, continuity.

If I already asked a person something in one area and know the answer, having my character ask the SAME THING and act like she didn't know is horrid writing ... or triggers.

The end boss was a PITA but I loved it ... though the ending felt too open and kinda ... "oh thanks for this buh byee now" and not what I would have liked.

And those ghoul things ... ARGH!  They were my worst bane.

Let me start this review by saying that I did read before I got it. However I wanted to try it anyway and see if I enjoy it myself due to my own tastes.

Going to compare this DLC to Legacy due to the fact it is the only other DLC quest wise for DA2.

Starting out, nice little chat with great varric and the seeker talking for the openning area to open up. Your basic ambush. Okay, not a problem with my party yet wait what is this? I am not moving but I see a red hair elf move about killing left and right leaving your Hawk just standing watching.

...Wait what? Let me get this right...My kick ass hawk and his group just standing and watching some knife ear elf show off some random flips and knife skills and just upping my hawk? Yeah...sorry that just makes no sense to me whatsoever.

So fine the fighting is over with and now this red head wants Hawk to go and join her? Why? Money...umm goodness of his heart? Suuuure my Hawk will do that out of the goodness of his heart when this game I have made him hate life itself. Its the reason why everyone is in the red in terms of hopes and dreams. But sure maybe the writing team at Bioware just could not make a reason up and just went with it. Whatever I will go with it.

So the screen goes back to party people and now I have to pick other people due to her being locked in. so Varric, elf girl, myself as Hawk and my romanced merrill. A basic 3 man party I can kill anything with as my rogue archer has enough skill to solo the game at the end of the day.

So the game goes on, not going to go into that much detail due to I don't want to kill the twist and turns but the game has them like any DLC it seems would have them.

Time it took, 3-5 hours maybe give or take. I did not do all the side quests in the end due to well pain in the backside for some of them.

Combat...was another story. A lot of it made no sense on the little ghast (or whatever they were called) and other random combat you do. One of the problems with the combat was...another ambush but fine I should have been able to handle it. As on head count the elfen camp had more man power overall. Yet wait what is this? I can't fight them? WTF? Then even after getting caught and waiting elf girl once again had to show off and just unlocked the door.

Merrill only had five or six lines. Varric had far more but it seemed to be a fanfiction of someones new character and Hawk as nothing was told of Merill and Hawk being together. AT all. Also Tallis always had to be better then Hawk such as Tallis getting "apart" from the group then combat. Fine combat goes well but then Tallis has to show up and win the day as clearly you cant do it youself.

Most of this DLc just yells, nine year old fanficiton, that bioware read up (or some family member) had to make into a game. Tallis was the only one the "prince" said was so pretty when you first went with her to the new place and had to take the spot light away from the group.

Railroading. Learn the term Bioware. Please. Its a term that is rather bad in my view for rpgs as it forces players to do something no matter what. Such as I don't know the caves? Or having to be with Tallis in the end no matter what.

Plus sides of this DLC...loot and xp. Sums it up. Story was weak to say the least. Tallis might have been better if she stayed with the group. This could have been her whole three part quest and she could have had a romance with male and female hawk. Yet she left. You could not even kill her in the end which bugged me. You could have "killed" her and she could still come back later even with the line of a healer found her before she died.

There was a line from Bioware awhile back ago to sum it up it was "we learned our lesson from Dragon age 1 and DLc for Dragon age 2 will go with the story of Hawk" Yet this DLC it felt like it was moving backwards to how DLC was for the first game. Mainly slowly turning the focus from Hawk to another person.

“You’re only as good as your next game..." This was made by one of the Co founders of Bioware. I hope they recall this due to its true but the fact is this DLc went down overall compared to the last DLc.

Somethings that could help change this DLc around. Make Tallis stay in the game and use the DLC to unlock her. Give her more lines for the game timeline and romance choice. Also let us change her weapons.

Show off the romance choice in the DLC if you have one. Simple code flag can tell the game to have it as a tree choice.

Don't Rail road. Let our choices mean something. If we want to try to fight 80 guards then so be it but in the end it is our choice. Don't let our main character be push around and be showed up by some random npc. We built our Hawks to deal with a lot.

The story was weak on the joining up part. Please work around that later.

Please don't base it off on random fanfiction that is off the net. Random girl coming to save the day and flirting with everything that walks and talks is not the best character ideas.

If DLC keeps up like this then odds are I won't be buying DLC again for awhile. (I know I know, well just one player not a lost compared to others who liked it) but just felt less then the last DLC which had more twist for plots and a deeper story all in all.

I hope people enjoy this review and don't consider it a random flame on the game.

I could not have said it better. The fact that my sweet Merrill is prettier, has a sweeter voice than this 'infamous'
RPG voice character just made it worse. The sneaking around? My GOD I didn't become invincible just to sneak. I am Hawke the Indestructable- let me SLAUGHTER every guard for god's sake. But then again...this isn't an "expansion." is it?

Personally, I would have panned the cam to Hawke once or twice during the intro. Showing him/her watching arms-crossed would have done a lot for our hero. I also I'd like Hawke to respond.

Tallis: Well, what are you waiting for?
Hawke: Just admiring the view. Don't get your knickers in a twist.

But we can't all be video game writers for a living.

The bug at the gate puzzle where I can't open one of the chests...
I'm stuck here now because of that (playing on the 360), so I can't fully say how I feel considering I have yet to complete it. From what I have done, it's pretty damn good.

You do realize the stealth section is optional, right? You can choose to "slaughter" your way through, if you prefer. You are by no means forced to go with stealth.

For me MOTA was better then Legacy in some areas and fell short in others.
In Legacy, as much as I enjoyed it, I grew somewhat annoyed with the fact that the environments were pretty similar to one another (which to be fair was unavoidable as it is mainly set in a tower).
In MOTA I enjoyed the environments much more, from the beautiful hunting grounds to the grand mansion that was Chateau Haine.
I enjoyed speaking with the guests at the party but I wished the presence of one in particular had been elaborated on a bit more, rather then placing them there just for fan service.
I did enjoy the new stealth mechanic, but one thing that bugged me was how when you were caught you would just be returned to where Talis was.
This made no sense at all and I would have much preferred it that if we were caught we would be forced into combat and would have to decide for ourselves whether to continue on fighting or just return to our last quick save.
As for the vaults, unfortunately I walked right past them and so didn't get to participate in the puzzles (given I enjoyed the Legacy puzzle I'm sure I would have enjoyed this too) but I have seen screenshots of the armour received and am disappointed that Bioware's gone for another "Item Pack 2 approach" and just reused armour models with better stats.
I loved the new creatures, please keep adding to the DA lore in future DLCs.
As for the story, I would have preferred it if it had changed a little more with your choice toward the end of the DLC, but aside from that I enjoyed it.
The final boss was cool as well but on my second try there was a wierd bug where he stood still and did nothing for the duration of the fight, allowing my party to just beat on him to no health.
Asides from this gripes, I enjoyed MOTA as a DLC and hope Bioware continues to push the standard we have come to expect in the future.
