"release dates" vs shipping and who gets lucky and plays early...

i wish it were more like DVD sales. theres a date and no one has it until that date every tuesday.
i mean im happy for the few people that are playing the game tonight, i would not want to take that away from them. but for those of us who have been waiting for years it kinda sucks. maybe if these retailers werent punished and there was a more laid back approach to selling games when the stores got them instead of setting dates that some people hold onto, we could just buy them, when the stores got them.
either on the 1st or the 5th, or anywhere in between etc...
i know, let me go ahead and get this over with now, the few of you that will say, first- "get a life", well, i can either say, NO THANKS or already have one. sorry that release dates seem so arbitrary anymore with video games and i have OCD. theyre IN THE STORES NOW and for lots of us they are already paid for. you know it makes sense with MMOs, but for anything else, ESPECIALLY a single player game, it doesnt.
so until this game is in my hands, all i will be doing is dreaming about it. its a precious jewel and once i have it i will be sniffing the case and pawing at my own moob. i may even have to call the police on myself for all the trouble and harm i will be causing myself as this terrible sh*tstorm is unleashed upon, um, myself...
and the others that will say "go outside", yeah, um no. im working on my video game physique and in doing so i need to keep off of my feet to keep the calories on. its a tough look to keep but the nerd-gals go crazy over it. they just love when they give me a reverse snuzzle and they have a spot to rest their hands on the shelf of my gut.
and as for "the opposites of ninjas", that will happen on its own terms in a vacuum. i think that only 5% of people who swim in that water are actually swayed pending release dates, if not much less. i think the decision was already made by financial circumstances or unethical circumstances.

The bad news is that the strategy guide is supposed to be here before the game arrives. Fortunately, I bought another book so I could get free shipping and I have the Dragon Age novels to read, so I think I should be okay, and I can use the time between now and when the game comes to focus on getting a job.

My one friend drove an hour and a half to go pick it up from an area that was already selling it just to turn around and drive an hour and a half back ..
The above is the exact reason why the street dates are supposed to be enforced.

i wonder for those of you who bought it online, if you will get it on monday or if UPS or whatever gets the game locally and sees the date for the game, will wait to put it "out for delivery" till tuesday?

Typically they get kicked out unless the sender is very specific on the matter. I've had a few times when the game arrived early, and more often they were just "on time". Much like stores, it's a hit and miss.

I feel your pain Ether. But as you probably know, dem's the breaks. This is the way it's always been, even as far back as Baldur's Gate 2's release, etc. I'm never the guy who gets the game first, but I'm also never the guy who's the last to play it. I have a decent job. I suppose if I wanted this kind of exclusive access to DA:O that others are currently enjoying, I'd get a job at a gamestore like gamestop, EB, GameCrazy, whatever, etc. But you know what? Those poor bastards only make like $7.50/hour. I guess that's one of the perks of working there.
Like me, you'll probably get it and play it on the 4th or 5th. This doesn't really bother me per se, because there is more to life than an ephemeral release of a game. I feel fortunate that I live in a place and have the funds to enjoy an outstanding piece of artwork like DA:O at all.
I know you were just coming on here to vent and feel better about these frustrations man, and that's cool. All I gotta say is: Hang in there buddy.
It won't be long now. Sheesh, in a few days time, you'll be kicking butt in Ferelden and won't even be thinking about your not having the game right now. Besides, some of these folks that already have it may not even be able to enjoy it like we will (i.e. have families, 8-5 jobs everyday this week and no vacation time left, attempting to rush through the game to be the first to beat it, hardware difficulties, etc, etc.) I mean, when folks come on here to talk about how they already have the game and how great it is....well... a part of them wants to notify us the ins-and-outs and clear up some unanswered questions, but it's also to jive us a little bit because they have something we don't. Don't let it get to you. There will be other big games and other big game releases. Perhaps on the next one you'll get it on midnight when it drops, and some other poor sap won't. It's all perspective really.
Ether, if it helps, I USUALLY stop checking forums and stuff a few days before a game comes out ("info blackout") so I won't worry about or obsess about not having said game to play. I haven't done so in this case, but it's cool. I know what I'm getting into when I come on here.
At any rate, now that my diatribe is over, I sincerely hope you enjoy some long, quality hours with this masterpiece. It'll be all the more sweeter because you waited!

It make me laugh to see how people get all worked up because someone else has the game already. It is really childish, just be glad for them, especially for a game like this one, we'll be playing it for months and it won't matter who got it first.
More to the point that it's a bit of an annoyance among the 16-2x demographic. There's something special about "being first" (you can back that up by all of those "server firsts" in WoW and Aion). Even worse is when the guy who was there ahead of you decides to tell you about it.

Well, it would be nice to have to have it on the weekend and not during the school week when I have swimming, my last midterm, reading, papers, etc..
Guess what, there is another weekend in 5 days, no really, I promise.
As for being first, I can see that in an MMO with PvP, and RTS multiplayer or a complicated FPS, you want to get in early so people are not all powerful or know all the maps and tricks before you do, but a singleplayer game? Just be careful not to read to much online not to get spoilers and that's it.
