Have you seen a Warcraft game since World of Warcraft came out?  When the MMO version of a game launches, it's the cash cow of the franchise (recurrent monthly fees ftw!) and there is no reason to compete with yourself by making single/multi player versions.

Heh, for that franchise it was.  For some others...not so much.

Hell, these companies are dreaming if they think they're going to have the same level of success as WoW.  That was a perfect set of circumstances that existed at the time for that game to garner it's level of success.  I would imagine even the Blizzard execs, if they were to be honest, would tell you they had no idea it was going to take off like it did.

Some of these companies will be lucky if their mmorpg counterpart is even around in another year or two.  For instance, anyone want to wager on whether Warhammer will break the three year mark?  I don't see them lasting much more than two unless they completely revamp their pay structure to try and get new blood to try out the game.

Single player games are a different breed. I wouldn't play Dragon Age if it was an MMO.

I'm still upset they went with an mmo for KOTOR instead of making a 3rd one. I don't want an mmo for Dragon Age.

/signed. No MMO. Multiplayer I don't really care about as long as it doesn't take away from single player.

Another no for MMO from here. I don't want another game where my character's actions have no impact nor do I wish that story will be ignored in favor of gameplay.

Big NO! MMO are great fun of some sort, but it does not win over a storyline and character development. But a great way to put this game more interesting is give it a party based multiplayer, like in NWN but of course improved.:bandit:

Well I can't think of another example on the market currently of an MMO that was adapted from a single/multi player game.  I know Bioware has The Old Republic in the works but it's not out yet.  That said, I don't think it's just a coincidence that there haven't been any new Warcraft RTS games released since WoW was released, do you?

no its not a coicidence i dont think, but not just for the reasons people have mentioned.

it would have to be integrated into the WoW lore somehow and when they are making 15 million+  a month off of WoW why take the chance of screwing it up?

Not sure where you think I disagreed with your opinion of WoW.  I clearly said that you were right about that franchise and I did mention Warhammer.  While they certainly have spent more on their 40k version in their video game versions of the PnP there have been other Warhammer games and I think it fits the criteria as a fair comparison in this case.  What I did say is what happened with WoW isn't really repeatable because the circumstances that allowed Blizzard to accomplish that don't exist any more.

Until someone comes up with something revolutionary compared to the norm there isn't going to be another repeat of what happened with that game and even then there are other things to consider such as the economy, pc user freindliness, etc. to consider.

Looks like the No's have it Bioware, NO MMO Dragon Age, at LEAST! not in place of a true blue single player sequel. And don't forget the consoles for the sequel, i would hate for two to come out only to find out its not for my PS3:P

what lack of reading comprehension spawned this mmo discussion? bioware has been working on a mmo for years now but it has nothing to do with Dragon Age.

As I remember it, Ray or Greg, the two co-founders of Bioware, did an interview some time ago; they didn't exclude the idea of a DA MMO. So the idea os out there at least. Any developer would say this, I find, if asked. Ideas are all well and dandy, but they need to be gioevn concrete form. If anything were to be developed into a DA MMO, it would be the the 2D browser game, DA Journeys, I think.

I certainly understand the why people wish or want to be able to play this game with your friends over say a LAN connection or what is used these days. You still can get some of the multiplayer experience by sharing your achievements, your characters and your progress through this social site.

Yeah, I pretty much agree.  Smart on their part because no matter what you may think at the present things could always change down the road so certainly makes sense that they would go that route even if they really don't consider this a viable option least currently.

Certainly doesn't mean there will be one down the road by any stretch of the imagination.

Not an MMO but if there were a few quests which you do with another player that gives you a shiny reward then yeah i'm up for that.

I hate mmo games. They are all a grind-fest waste of time. Not to mention all of the jerks and morons you are forced to deal with on a daily basis. I refuse to spend my free time dealing with aggravation. No thank you.

single player is fine for me. MMOs only last as long as it doesn't turn into another daily chore, the novelty wears fast.

I've played Ultima online and that lasted me no more than the provided time card it provided in the box. Same went with WoW. Anyway, 90% of MMO players are just out to spoil others' fun by doing PKs and all that nonsense.

I'll stick to a single player thank you.

you just have to find the right MMO. I see exponentially less idiocy in EQ2 than i saw in WoW. People there are actually mature and helpful. It's all a matter of the target audience.

I think at this point, most companies know that they aren't going to topple WoW, nor do they aim to. The way to succeed these days in the MMO market is to find a niche and fill it. Don't try to do everything, because you'll end up with a mediocre game that accomplishes everything but does EXCELS at nothing. Instead pick a niche, like EQ2 has done with PvE content, or Warhammer Online *tried* to do with PvP, or Lord of the Rings does with lore/casual content, and do nothing but try to make it the best it can be for that niche. PvPers don't play EQ2. PvE players aren't really drawn to Aion or WAR. Hardcore raiders aren't satisfied in LoTRO...and that's OK.

For some reason people seem to think that an MMO has to have a subscriber base of 10 million to succeed. You realize EQ1 is still running with probably 100,000 subs. EQ2 with maybe 250,000. Not to mention some of the other smaller ones.

I have high hopes that Bioware can fill the "story/character" niche that has been sadly lacking in MMOs till now with TOR. Everyone seems to have this fear that DA:2 will be an MMO, but i don't think that will happen. There may be a DA:2 and there may be an MMO, but to me, Thedas would be the setting for an MMO that isn't necessarily related (except via lore) to the single player games. And I don't see an issue with that. MMOs need worlds to host them....why not Thedas?

No MMO! NO NO NO!

*ahem*

TOR looks ok, and I'll probably try it, but I'll be trying it as a solo player, so... it might as well NOT be an MMO for how I'll play it.

That's how I treated Champions Online. Took a character to about 30th level in my free month, plus created a handful of others to have fun with the character creator, and got enough play-time in to make it feel like a decent single-player campaign and justify the $20 I spent.

TOR will most likely be very similar. Just not a subscription kinda guy, nor a running around with tons of other players who I ignore and who are ignoring me kinda guy either.

Keep it single player, MMO's never end, they normally whither and die away left to be incomplete for eternity. And I hate subscriptions lol.
