Is it me or is there a distinct polarity in how fans and critics recieve these DLC's?

I think Gametrailers.com reviews are better though, or maybe I just like watching things...

The critics expectations seem to be unrealistic.

I didnt realize that the story and lore that MotA focuses on was in the original DA2 game. Strange. XD

Plus I suspect a lot of game review sources are over-compensating for missing the popular dissatisfaction with DA2 by going too far in the other direction and being toonegative about any content that doesn't excrete rainbows or cure cancer.

BioWare released the second DLC for Dragon Age II today (the first was Legacy). I enjoyed the base game, and was excited to play through Hawke's big heist. I didn't like Mark of the Assassin
The story revolves around a new character, an elf assassin named Tallis. Tallis is voiced by Felicia Day. Tallis even looks a bit like her real-world counterpart. I don't like Felicia Day. I don't like this DLC. I don't like Ms. Day because after she wins my heart in the DLC, she was unavailable to me in the main game, the wanton trollop.
You can activate the quest from your slum house. I started it very close to the beginning, shortly after Hawke and his family arrive in Kirkwall. I feel like this was a mistake, since low-level characters don't have as many options in battle, even if the encounters are supposedly tuned to your level. I totally suck at games. Considering how the difficulty curve is, I'd recommend playing on normal right out of the gate.
The intrigue begins with a cut to the Seeker asking Varric about "the Qunari," and Tallis is wrapped up in that tale. That confused me as Sten is no where to be found. Hawke meets her when she helps him (assuming you're a sexist troll like me) out of an ambush, and she enlists him to recover a valuable gem called the Heart of the Many. The heist involves showing up to a dinner party, posing as nobility, hunting a wyvern, and other assorted hijinx. To explain too much about the course of events would spoil the story, but I will anyway, because Tallis left me.
The majority of the gameplay is the same as the core Dragon Age II experience. Run around until you find something lost in the forest. Solve some simple puzzles that totally baffled me until I found spoilers. Touch an altar, wash your hands, then fight off a crazy cult because the exits all have forcefields around them, which sucks. These tried-and-true activities aren't bad; I had a hard time doing them in the base game. But here, they feel like they are being used to make experience harder for me rather than add engaging moments like hot 'n spicy sex. I will say that I didn't run into any recycled environments, and the pacing was handled well in terms of keeping the action moving forward. Mark of the Assassin took me a little over six hours to beat, but most of that time was spent trying to hit on Tallis.
An exception to that statement is the stealth sequence, which required sneaking. As a whitebread warrior, I sucked at it. On one hand, I'm glad BioWare tried to change things up a little bit. On the other hand, different isn't always good, and in this case, the creeping around doesn't add any entertainment to the package for those who play straight male warriors. This game needs Barrett rifles and fighter planes.
What do you get as a memento of your time with Tallis? A social disease I had to see Anders about. It was totally her fault. If she says we didn't get it on, we totally did, she's such a liar. I also gained a bunch of levels, not to mention about 20 gold (which made me feel cheap and used).
No part of Mark of the Assassin feels broken or awful. It does feels like a missed opportunity to try some new things with the formula, though. It's more Dragon Age II, and that's tough to complain about. However, why pay $10 to do more of the same stuff that is abundantly available in the main game? If you think about that and your answer is still "But...but...Felicia Day!", then you suck. Otherwise, take a pass, games should be geared for the exclusive entertainment of people like me, not people like you. This expansion needed more pixel sex, naughty underwear and bigger swords.

I know you are being facetious with that but I totally got that impression about the review as well; that he decided he hated the DLC before he even played it and even though he actually liked it he couldnt admit that and there was no way he could actually be universally positive because of the balls up of "reviews" for DA2 almost universally praising it.
I am not gonna buy MotA anyway because I am still waiting for a decent patch, and for a toolset update for DA2.
I may eventually get it and Legacy later when they sell the whole lot as a package deal...
First Bioware game that their DLC wasnt an instabuy for me.

Well, these days I see many people writing good things about this DLCs, but I wonder myself...... Which percentaje of these people who praise the DLCs liked DA2? How much people who disliked (like me) are buying the DLCs?
I think that from fans part the only voice that is heard nowadays is from those who liked DA2, so it's natural that fans reviews are praising both Legacy and MotA, while the critics have abandoned the game (let's remember that it has been a very polarizing game) and they (we, I include myself) are no longer speaking our opinion. I also believe that there are very few "converts" (those who disliked DA2 and continued buying DLCs and found them enjoyable)

i wish i knew why some people hated this or any dlc, it looks amazing(seen most of a walkthrough) i guess you just cant change peoples view on the game itself, though this critic actually like the base game
Well, regarding the linked review, the writer basically feels that it is more of the same game, which he doesn't feel is worth paying an extra $10 for. I agree with someone above who said he had unrealistic expectations. I might also go farther and say that he doesn't like original DA2 anyway, so something like this won't "fix" it for him.
I don't agree with any of those things, but I think it's what he was going for nonetheless.

Whats more the review is patently untrue because large swathes of the gameplay is actually trying different things from the base game.nightscrawl wrote...

edit: Right now I'm playing MotA. I have completed the forest part, and I'm fearing that this dlc lasts even less. But it's true that gameplay feels different from original campaign. Hell, it happens the same with legacy: it's a lot better than the repetitive and boring main adventure.

I think that the review tries to point a core issue: the difference between price and content is awful. I liked Legacy, even disliking DA2 a lot. But I think undeniable that is extremely short for the price. The balance between content and money affects your perspective as a player.
Short? Maybe if you only play it once, but the converse of your statement is also true: your perspective as a player affects the balance between content and money.
These games and their DLC are built to accommodate multiple arrangements of party builds, plus some of Hawke's dialog choices and decisions. Not only are they meant to accommodate different playing styles and preferences, they are built to be replayed. Though you may have had your fill by reaching the ending, you never see everything the first time through.
I think most of the game industry is still fixated on the old idea (going back to Space Inaders) that you progress through a game by simply clearing the area of baddies and moving on. That seems to be the only goal, and outside of that goal there is little to nothing to experience. Well today's games are much more sophisticated, but today's game reviewer just doesn't have time for that.
If you play this DLC through three or four times by itself or over the course of a few DA2 playthroughs it can become a 12-15 hour experience in total. Some might call $10 for 12-15 hours a bargain.

I don't get why game-reviewers dislike it.

But going to a movie lasts about 2 hours, costs $8.50 where I live for an evening show, and most of them are totally forgettable afterwards. Not too many Hollywood films are coming out anymore that make me want to see them more than once. Never wanted to draw pictures of movie characters or write fanfics of them.....so....$10 for DLC that I enjoyed (and all I expected was some new environments and monsters really...I have no clue who FD is so don't give a fig if she's in it or not) is an entertainment bargain.
