I just finished my third playthrough of
Mark of the Assassin a few minutes ago and I'm trying hard to come up with any reason why any of my Hawkes thus far would go along with Tallis in the first place, and even less reason once her deception is revealed.
My problem with Tallis is that I feel Hawke has almost no reason at all to cooperate with her.
I didn't want to accompany her after the initial meeting in Hightown, but the narrative is locked in even though she hadn't convinced me to go along.
Once we were at the chateau, things were fine until we were captured. At that point, she doesn't do anything to make me sympathetic to her mission after all her deception was revealed. It had the negative effect of making me less sympathetic to the Qunari in general when I was reasonable sympatheitc to them prior to meeting Tallis.
She also gives
no compelling reason to aid her when it comes to deciding whether or not to take the path with her. Saying something to the effect of "I can't tell you and I know that's a hard sell" just makes me reject the option. Saying "innocent people are going to die" is a meaningless claim unless one can back it up and Tallis does not do this.
I would have killed her at any number of opportunities after leaving the chateau had the narrative permitted it. I would have left her to her fate and let her take on Salit and Prospero alone if the narrative permitted it. I would have taken the scroll from her violently had the narrative permitted it.
I dunno...
Every narrative game railroads the player at times, but to quote Too Much Joy, it felt like "I was trapped in a book about someone else."
I really wanted to like Tallis. I wanted her to convince me to come to her aid. But I'm left angry by her inability to do so and the empty apologies she gives for not explaining anything properly.
