Does anyone consider the legend of zelda series a RPG?

I consider it an RPG. While it's a bit more streamlined, you're still "Role Playing".

Now, I haven't played/beat a Zelda game since LttP. (Almost beat Zelda OOT, but during that time period I was a strictly PC only gamer). But, I consider Zelda from my experience an RPG. While you don't "level up" or "Grind", you still play a role of a character, you still advance in the story line and get better gear as you go, you still solve RPGish puzzles.

So yes, Zelda is indeed an RPG. It's just not your standard "Leveling up" RPG you would normally see.

Maybe you could consider it an early generation (the NES and SNES gen) "Action Adventure RPG"?

Zelda fits the very definition of an Action game... you run around and he swings a sword when you tap a button.

That would makes DAO and Baldur's Gate an RTS. You select a group/party, and click on another and attack. issuing commands to each unit type based on that unit's abilities.

..and as for the console versions, that makes DAO a third person action adventure game!

no, actually in those games your character is represented with a list of physical and mental statistics, abilities, and attributes. you then direct that character around, along with his party members each of which is represented the same way, and you join combat which is handled by the game in the background through a sequencing of turns and/or action placement, and action determination based on random number generators.

an RTS is defined by the production and management of units, in real time.

JRPGs aren't really roleplaying games; you don't create a character, or really make decisions about anything. I love FF Tactics and plenty of other JRPGs, but they're more accurately described as adventure games with stats and levels.

it's still playing a role, even if you dont get to choose the role you play.

By that definition, all games are roleplaying games: Donkey Kong, Arkanoid, Doom, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, everything.

Zelda is a fantasy-themed adventure game.

and other kinds of games are defined other ways. always based on the mechanics of the game.

again, the one thing all kinds of games have in common is the ability to have an intricate, in depth, or gripping story.
