My guess is that MP will only be available online, and not over local connections or split screen. There's a lot of perceived incentive at EA to get people into online / connected play, and local MP doesn't do that.

Just my guess, mind you.

sounds like what there doing with dark souls. and dead island i actually called that this would be great if was co-op yay! i cant wait i am glad its not people against people{which i am against if it came out like that} but if they are taking this from a dark souls and dead island multi player will there be team fighting vs other teams like someone invades their ME universe which is how ds is you can fight against other team players in different"universes of there game

If I don't have an Xbox Live gold account does that mean I won't be able to play multiplayer?

If they don't offer a split screen or single player format, then yes. Ex: I can play Gears Horde mode alone without ever activating Xbox Live. If the devs designed the game so that it could only be played with 2+ people, I have no way of accessing content without Live.

As of now, Bioware tentatively claims to have a single player variant for the new co-op.

just like dead island/darksouls. you need 2 copies of the game to play in multi player and  a connection to xbox to play co-op.

i really like how this is going only thing i feel upset is  bioware lying to us the entire time saying there be no MP i guessing they ment no MP like doom games where you kill each other{which is good thing considering that ME3 is not about killing team mates,unless they decide to go play babysit a nuke till it go kablooie}

With the massive amount of ME1 and ME2 gameplay devoted to the killing of mercenary bands, I could easily see a game option in the future involving competitive play between merc squads.

Just make it its own title so there's no whining. :P

Optional multiplayer WTF?!! Is this an attempt to appeal to the COD crowd? This game is a story based SINGLE player game. It doesn't need this gimmick.

Please read the thread on the Multiplayer FAQ before continuing.

What does that mean?

I didn't know that Bioware has made any claims that there is a Single Player Variant for the new Co-op, if that is true that would be wonderful. ( please if you can, post a link !! )

I would love to enjoy the Co-op option if its just me with AI controlled squadmates. So that I can enjoy all that ME3 is offering without having to get Xbox live just so that I can see all the cutscenes.

And from Dragon Age 2 we know that EA NEVER skimps on resources for it's projects, be they time or money? Just because they have the resources doesn't mean that they always give them.

DA2's problem was lack of TIME, not resources.

Time is a resource. It's also directly connected to the game's budget.

Fun fact: After establishing that ME3's additional dev time is pretty much used for the mp "feature", we can assume that the whole dev cycle for ME3's sp campaign is about the same length as the DA2 dev cycle.

Not really. Time is generally the about of time you have to make something, even ityou have endless supplies, with little time you can't really make anything great. If the da tem had more time to plan then most of the problems in DA2 would not be their.

In Bogsnot's MP question thread, social.bioware.com/forum//topic/323/index/8504579, a BW developer has confirmed that it is possible to play the Co-Op mode with only one player, but that "it will be difficult". Difficulty balancing aside, that will always be true as the enemies will have only one target to attack.

No word was given as to whether a multiplayer service was still needed to play the mode solo.

I think the anti-MP detractors are hoping for an AI-squad option, because it would then turn the game into a similar combat situation like you'd face with SP, except you're not playing named characters.

Eclipse vs blue suns? not bad idea for a spin off.

I mean, I understand what a lot of the vitriol is about regarding adding MP to Mass Effect, at least initially. Online multiplayer communities are crawling with juvenile delinquents who are the very proof of the "Johnathan Gabriel Greater Internet F***wad Theory". There are times where I wish you needed to have a license to use the Internet (or at least, subscribe to XBL/PSN/Steam), or some sort of age-restricted areas so you can have more confidence in the maturity level of strangers.

But that's a social illness on a scale nearly impossible to solve without some global activism taking place.

Ok, returning to the topic... :P

What has been speculated rather heavily is that as SP progresses, Shepard will acquire allies which will "unlock" the use of certain races (and possibly classes). In the same vein, Shepard's success at liberating or securing various battlefronts will then allow Co-Op squads to "defend" that forward area from further incursions.

All of this is speculation but sounds fun to me.

But at the same time.. winning 'areas' in co-op guarantees 'resources' in the SP campaign

I suppose they are meant to be played side by side, but I can't be bothered with that

This is the core of the pro-MP "argument": That options, especially ones which do not increase the price point, are seldom a bad idea.

I'm probably gonna go with Singleplayer first just because I want to finish the story as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Then I'll try co-op. I have a ton of Shepards so it's not like I'll be missing anything.

Well, they did say some enemy types will be spoiled. I wish I could find the link.

But I mean, if you consider that really minor like a lot of folks do it's a non-issue.

I'm going to finish at least on playtrough in SP, and then maybe play the MP. I'm more interested in ME3' story and its end. Plus, I don't want the bonus of the MP (Though I read that you can choose to use them or not in the SP), I want to complete the game without any help from the MP.

I used to be Anti-MP , but now that I know Co-op missions is available to Single Players I am no longer against it. This addition will only provide me with more game play time, and a reason for a second play through.

Of course as an Single Player fan for Mass Effect, I will be playing the SP first without any of the MP elements, then on my second play through I will play the Co-op side by side with the SP.

I said lets keep asking for more answers, we had over 130 posts arguing about this announcement, and then they posted an MP FAQ, So i guess lets keep asking the questions, Don't settle, lets get to the bottom of it, and lets get some official answers.
