The only workaround is to use an external mouse. This game is not meant to be played with a touchpad.

Yeah - you can get a USB mouse for pretty much dirt cheap. Personally, I prefer high end ones, but if budget is an issue, just get a logitech or the like. Make sure you have the USB ports good to go and you should have no problems.

Well, I have a gaming laptop which is competitive with a desktop system, but I have 8GB RAM, a quad-core CPU and two Mobility HD 5870s in a Crossfire config (ATI cards). It's possible to upgrade laptop video cards, but it's not easy. You'd need to find a card that actually fits your mobo and determine whether or not your system can even handle a new card that will undoubtedly draw more power than your existing one.

Also, your mobo may only support one kind of card, so if you do have an ATI card, you might be limited to ATI cards (assuming that upgrading to a 5870 is viable and that you find one that fits). As I understand it, it can cost a fair bit more to try upgrade a laptop system too. I would consult a professional or just get a new gaming laptop. There are fairly affordable ones around if you need a system that's actually mobile (much cheaper getting a tower system if you're not going to move it around).

EDIT: Ah yes, here: http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/

They have laptop video cards - I suppose you can look around and consult them or try to google for more information. I have heard of fellow Alienware owners who have crammed an HD 6970 into their M17x systems, but ah, your existing system seems unlikely to support anything like that (and for the record, while the 6970s seem to work, it's a lot of trouble implementing the workarounds necessary to get one to function in an M17x - plus the fit isn't the greatest, but I digress).

I run ME2 on an early 2008 MacBook with BootCamp Windows XP, below minimum specs of ME2. The graphics look and work fine in 1280x800 res. But of course I don't even try to run FRAPs.

You can modify your Coalesced.ini to turn off vertical sync, enable high polygon, etc. to speed up your frame rate. But with your specs those shouldn't be necessary.

You may also need to put in your laptop battery (and keep the power plug in too) and apply manual fan control to prevent overheating. Many laptops artificially slow down their performance if you don't do these.

To test if overheating is a problem, put your laptop to sleep, then in the fridge for 5 minutes (it will do a world of good). Take it out, start the game. If performance is significantly better than usual you have a problem with overheating.

Unless you are playing competitive MP games, then there is absolutely no benefit to spending a lot of money on a mouse.
Even if you are, there are many arguments based around speed and precision why you should look around for an old style PS2 mouse instead of buying an expensive USB mouse. Hardware interface > software interface. Always.
