I REALLY hope it isn't compulsory with ME3. I also REALLY hope it isn't compulsory with Star Wars: The Old Republic either...

I have heard so many nightmare tales and numerous disasters from people who downloaded Origin when they bought games like BF3.

ME3, more than likely considering the EULA for the game was spotted containing refrences to Origin, both retail and digital considering most retail units come packaged with the client upon sale. TOR, from what we've heard no, that doesn't use Origin

I find using cracks perfectly justifiable for stupid DRM
Better than that is spreading the word. That's why Capcom changed their approach - the lunacy was highlighted for everyone to see. It's so unfair that those who legally own a game are restricted by stupid DRM. Of course EA knows this...
I have origin on my PC. I can tell you first hand it's bullsh*t. Let EA know that PC gamers just want the game and not the bastard child of Facebook that battlelog is - it's not even in the game menu. You have to go online to see your stats. Complete nonsense.

It's because the data been sent to EA is encrypted.
You do realize encryption isn't the same thing as data compression right? Encryption can even increase the amount of data, depending on the algorithm. And it's not using enough CPU time to be doing a bunch of compression either.
Having dabbled quite a bit with cryptography as a hobby in my younger years I can also tell you that encrypting stuff can decrease the size of it.
It's all dependant on the algorithms and/or frameworks used. So you can't make any real asumptions about size as you just implied by your "can increase" remark.

Normally I would state disapproval, although frankly unless they address it, be my guest, hell I'd even go so far as to encourage it.

Let's get something straight. Clients like Origin are not about curbing piracy, they're marketing tools. Period. Piracy is the best thing that happened to EA, given their counter measures.
Origin is all about curbing privacy. Reread the original EULA. It's really easy to see the purpose of Origin.
EA's not scanning your program files directory for marketing reasons, the data is effectively useless. You could get the same info from reading the NPD reports (The ones you pay for). You can get the same game-usage stats from datamining achievements for free.

Start the installation, get to the EULA, don't accept it...but Origin already has started scanning and cataloging your program files folder before you even accept the EULA?
Can't read German, can someone confirm that's what happens in this vid?
That's going to end very, very, badly if true.

I can read a bit of German, and assuming AGB is the German equivalent of EULA, that's pretty much the long and short of it.

Yep, you got that right, it starts scanning before the EULA is accepted.

AGB = Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen, as in standard form contract. So an EULA can be an AGB, but it's not exactly the same term.

I pre-ordered ME3 on Origin but have since cancelled the order and got a refund. I'll use Steam or go to a shop.
BF3 requires Origin to be installed no matter where you purchase it from, and it is not available on Steam. ME3 will most likely be the same way.
Edit: there is a link to a ME3 EULA somewhere in this thread that seems to say that Origin is required
