Afaik, Steam conducts surveys twice or more every year to see what kind of hardware their users have. They choose the user PCs they want to scan at random, and before that scan happens the user is notified, in which they can choose to opt out of it.
Someone mentioned a few pages back that Origin starts scanning your PC before you've even accepted the EULA.

Not to mention that it also scans the entire DataProgram folder as well as other odds and ends whilst it ignores the registry keys. The problem is that all the data is scans can simply be sent to EA at any point in the future, should EA choose to send out a collect signal on a rolling basis to prevent the servers becoming overloaded.

Steam scans hardware and software interaction with its system, plus one has that opt out. And yes, apparantly Origin starts scanning as soon as its installed, ie: before the EULA is accepted.

Its registry access showed Steam accessing system stuff but it didn't access registry keys for other software except for the following collection of keys to find out what other software was installed on the system:
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall

So Steam checks what software you have uninstalled in your computer? How is that different from simply checking what software there is? Do we know what Origin accesses? Everything or specific items? Do we have proof of either cases or is this rampant theory making?

I'm really concerend with how your mind works, pal. If it's not illegal with the US laws it SHOULD be. Of course, someone like me, being protected by laws in Germany, can't do anything about US laws - armicans should work on that. Still, it doesn't make it right!

Nope, look at the process moniter logs, Origin scans the entire ProgramData folder, but does not scan the registry keys for legitimate EA games, from what I have seen.

Steam checking what I have uninstalled, is odd, but largely irrelevant. It doesn't check what I have installed and I can opt out of the data collection If I choose.

It is not an argument it is a fact! You weren't there to experience the outcry that came with the birth of Steam. Good times.....

So you agree with me then concerning the laws? Also I apologise that the sarcasm went right over your head. I guess the only common thing between us is the Saxon blood and not the culture.

How is asking for proof trolling? Proof was given about Steam and I accept it but the only thing I have seen concerning the scans by Origin is rampant theories. I want exact indication of what is scanned and not just " It scans all of the Program Files". I thought as a European you would appreciate the search for proof that characterizes our ancestors.

Ah proof. Good. Don't mind it scanning my Program Files. Maybe it can see that I have installed quality strategy games so EA can make a decent C&C. With my active computer life monitoring my uninstalls is basically reading my Program Files. PC players here never uninstalled a game after playing it. From my log Steam can see I have 200+ games, several imports and quite a bit of pre-installed HP software.

Stating it scans the whole ProgramData folder is the facts, because it is what it does, it scans it all, including miscellaneous files and icons, even the software which has nothing to do with EA's games. If you want to go look up the actual Process Monitor Logs go ahead, it's there.

This is from the front page. It was a tax software system.

Thanks for the link.
I love how that one kid´s main complaint about Origin is that they couldn´t choose their own avatar.

As far as I can tell, most german online newspapers are running stories about origin at the moment. Can anyone confirm?

This is the registry key that is accessed when you want to "uninstall" a program in Windows. That's how Steam creates the list of potential non-Steam games when you want to add one.

Evey software you install have access to this key since it is where it is listed for uninstalling option.

For Origin, there are 39 pages of posts, includins links to newspapers on the subject, Youtube videos showing what Origin does, screenshots. You will need to do some reading, because yes there is proofs and it's not a rampant theory.

As far as my German goes, it sounds like your typical company line of 'we didn't do nothing wrong'.

I can send you a dozen links if you like. Yes, almost every important newspapers and finally even TV news.

I don't even read most comments on EA sides. I know why.

Yep, that it is: They value our privacy, they only need the data for our perfect online adventure (duh, don't even want that) etc. It's just "bla bla bla" with nice phrases.

Im not a lawyer, but I must admit, that the EULA looks quite like STEAM now. No private information that doesnt have to do with Origin and the game itself will be transfered anymore.
It looks like a little victory for the german gaming community.

GO US, stand up and fight for your rights! :)

If you just accept all BS nothing will change !

I agree, they still have to change Origin itself. And I still dont trust EA after the last months. Im still hoping for a Origin free ME3, before I preorder the collectors edition again!

That reminded me of the Microsoft/Ie case.

Kinda funny that if EA had had monopoly on the market, EU would have snapped the neck of Origin being mandatory in no time.

Wow, our petition reached over 7000. Go, go, go!

@Johnson1972: Me too.

Here is the new Version of the EULA, compared with the old version. It's German, but I do think the red speaks for itselt. However, eventhough the new EULA is shorter than the older one, the critical passages are still there, just phrased differently.

Meaning: That stateman was all a lie (which we knew, btw...  How stupid do you think we are EA?)

To do list
  • do laundry
  • clean toilette
  • release statement about origin
  • water flowers
  • shopping
