You really think they will scan your whole PC? Do you know how that would affect your system? Try running a full antivirus scan and you get the idea.

They will of course not do anything like this. It's just dumb to think so. They may be allowed whatever you accept in the EULA, but would they actually make use of it? No way, I'd say.

They will want Hardware information mostly, and perhaps a list what games you got apart from their games, to see what people who play this game also like to play for future projects.

Your local grocery store also does this, they collect data on what you buy and when you buy it, and what else you bought so that they can improve service and offers.

Keep telling yourself there's nothing going on, I'm sure you'll feel better with your head in the sand.

Even my hardware specs and the games I have installed are none of EA's damn business.

PS:  I buy my groceries with cash.

That is disturbing but I doubt it's real to tell you the truth. I've used Origin since the start and I haven't noticed any weird activity on ym computer, neither data transmission of the magnitude would be required by a scan such as this.

A few watched Origin over a long period. Sometimes it only started working three hours later or so. There are many screenshots that at least show Origin is putting it's virtual fingers where they do not belong.

If nothing happened to you, well, that's good for you. And I mean that. However I wouldn't put my money on Origin NEVER going somewhere else that it's (legally) designed files/folders.

If you are interested in what's currently going on: Look here.

It's only half of whats going on in Germany, but still a nice summary. ;)

Well... go tell Germany, because it's in the newspaper, in the radio, on TV (news broadcasts), it's everywhere! Oh and go check the Amazon.de site for Battlefield 3. There are a lot of pictures and videos on the net.

I understand you don't want to read 45 pages of posts (I would not ehhe), but there are a LOT of information saying that Origin is doing it. You can't come here and tell people it's fake without really investigating it.

Why don't you start searching the web about it if you think it is fake? should be lots of hits on it by now, especially in german if you can understand that language as they got the issue elevated to being on the news.

And the original EULA actively stated they would do this, making it all the more obvious that it IS happening. I think they have changed the EULA 3 or 4 times by making the terms more and more obscure now in order to try and keep damage control. Doesn't change the fact in what they intended to use the program for, or what its capabilities actually are.

I didn't say it IS fake. I said I don't THINK it's real. Has Origin replied to it? If it was real, perhaps it was only scanning for games.

Scanning for games? There is an easy way to do so: do like Steam. Check the registry key for "Uninstall" softwares. If they are searching for games, this is probably the worst programers I've seen in my life.

And I'm arguing that it isn't any of EA's business, and if they want this information they can bloody well ask me for it, not just collect it without ever stating what specific information they are after.

EA has replied by changing the EULA. Which changes nothing. When talking to EA in Germany, they took back OPENED games and USED keys without and resistance. They know it's wrong and if they start refusing now that will be a real uproar.

Oh, and they gave an official statement which was just "Know .. privacy... bla... bla.. won't snop around.. bla..."

And if you actually watched the "German mainstream TV channels" you'd have known that there is nothing wrong with the EULA. The whole sh*tstorm is about Origin scanning your files once you have started the installation process but before signing the EULA.

This is wrong, german autorithies intervine because th EULA contradicts german law in some points and is thus invalid. So the inquire if EA does what the EULA states because this would actually be illigal.
Also in many points the EULA is just missleading. If a point of the EULA contadicts german law, the law says the whole point is invalid (no matter if EA states that in the EULA it has to be adjusted in this case). So if people take this points serious they wouldn't know what actuall rights they have, like return+refund and law suit in germany etc.

Yeah I don't know what to think. It seems like it scans for something. Question is what it does with the information. I haven't noticed any scans on my computer but then again I only had Origin on for a short while.

They're welcome to scan my computer though, I don't mind it. There's nothing interesting on my computer really.

But, I can see how people find it disturbing to say the least. I am now convinced, it does seem to scan. Foul play I'd say. Even if it's just scanning for games it's a poor way of doing it.

wanna make this more mass effect related?

I would really REALLY love if Bioware and EA dropped the concept of programs like Origin and crafting games based on the freaking collected data and just be more active on the boards asking for real direct feedback from the fans

It's easy enough to test though. Just download tools like Process Monitor and Process Explorer from Microsoft (for free) and check it out yourself, if you want.

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb842062

Anyway, I hope ME3 doesn't require Origin to run the game(preferably not at all, of course).

Oh, right. Forgot about that. So, to bring this back on topic: What advantages in terms of user statistics does Origin offer that wasn't pretty much covered by the system(s) that DA:O, ME2 and DA2 had? And what part does any part of my harddrive that isn't ME3 play in it?

Better now? ;)

A: you install Origin
B: shortly after you installed Origin (some hours)
C: periodically
D: all of the above

Keep us informed Wintermist.

I am still at a loss as to how to handle my ME3 CE preorder. Skyrim is getting ready to release. I was originally planning on waiting a while for the price to drop on that...but now I'm seriously considering cancelling my ME3 CE preorder and moving the funds over to a Skyrim preorder. There is still some time before that happens. I know BW/EA won't move faster on reaching a decision on my account, but I still hope that perhaps an answer will arrive at a more fortuitous time (read: soon).

I wonder how late I can wait to preorder Skyrim from Gamestop and still get the map?

Well of course they deny it.  I don't think anyone will find that shocking or unexpected.  No profits-minded business with any
sense of self-preservation would openly admit, "yeah, you're right, it's a bunch of spyware, suckers!"

Edit: Okay...dude...why, when I quoted you, did it label you "Chris Priestly?"
