Ok... so fill me in- WHY IS EVERYONE RAGING OVER ORIGIN EXACTLY? What makes Origin the root of all evil that it's portrayed to be in this thread?

It scans your files, that's about it.

It isn't just that. EA had huge egg on face from origin and bf3 launch as well as sims pets launch. People could not connect to play, people could not connect to download what they bought, some people still are having problems as origins infects ea's download manager for the people who refuse Origins. All those people who could not connect for days or even weeks as it persists for some spent money for...nothing?

I won't buy any game that requires origin, period.

It's being reported by those who've tested Origin that it begins scanning your computer before you've even agreed to the EULA. Just installing and running Origin long enough to get ME3 installed will most likely send a full scan result about your comptuer back to EA.

At this point, I don't even want EA to know how much RAM I have installed. Screw them.

Where was this reported? Usually you have to agree to the EULA before the program starts to install, in which case it cant be Origin scanning your system.

Don't forget the newly revealed "****** off a moderator and your Origin game collection goes bye bye"... :?

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention guys...:o

Looks like I'll be uninstalling Origin ASAP

EDIT: actually... to keep the functionality of a couple of my games, I can't uninstall it.
*Prompts Norton firewall to block Origin's internet access*

Let us know if you were able to block Origin without disrupting your games.

Thanks

Well, I guess I'll have to buy the whole Mass Effect trilogy with the Origin.
.
With all the evil you guys all accusing EA to perform, they are actually taking note that my country exists. I can buy ME, ME2 and pre-order ME3 without an international credit card and paying in my country's money directly. That is a HUGE deal. Not to mention a huge deal cheaper!
.
It's a shame my pc is mediocre and I can baraly run Mass Effect in it. But it's this, or I'll have to wait weeks after release to get my Mass Effect 3 copy on the 360 and paying almost twice the original price.

Thanks for the links, but they don't answer my question. Neither do the other posts I've seen in this thread as far as I know.

Where does it scan BEFORE INSTALLING?

Virtual machine solves all the origin problems. They can go ahead and data mine all they want, they'll see nothing but a blank machine.

The biggest issue is the forum bans. If there ever was a cause that people should be outraged over its losing access to the single player games you payed for because of what you said on an online forum.

I agree.  I'm actually really interested to see where this ends up.  I think EA is well on track to a industry rattling court case at this point,  especially since the process is so arbitrary.

Especially if EA extends this to the NFL series,  not only with angry consumers,  but it may well not be something the NFL wants to be associated with.

I don't get people who say they'll avoid Origin by switching to consoles.

Sure, instead of installing the game on a device you control, use a DRM-locked device where you can't do as much as sneeze without the manufacturer's permission. It's like advocating shaving your head as a solution for dandruff.

Once again, people are getting confused between Origin (software) and Origin (account).
So far, dev responses via tweets have not only indicated that once installed, you can uninstall Origin (software), but also the game will require a once off activation connection via your Origin account.

Whilst I have no problems with the once off activation connection, I do have problems with allowing Origin on my PC.

We aren't mixing them.

It doesn't mean just activation to Origin account one time, it means activation to Origin account by using Origin client one time too. That means forceful acception of Origin client other features too. That means forceful acception of data mining, because you can't PLAY the game if you don't accept Origin client software license.

Problem is NOT activation of game license to Origin account. Problem is that to do that, we ALSO need to accept Origin client software license.

The poster I was replying to was under the impression that you would need to have Origin installed, and be in use, for the period of time you had ME3 installed on your system for. I clarified that you didnt have to.

Because of the same names, people ARE confusing them, as I have had to make this clarifying point numerous times in this thread.
I get it, you know the difference. Dont tell me that everyone does when it is obvious that other people are getting confused.

Depends what game feature the person was talking. If the person was talking MP features, then yes Origin client is needed for it. Because you need to login to account with Origin client everytime you play MP part of the game. Single player side how ever doesn't require Origin client to anything else than game activation.

That by itself is enough. By the time you activate the game, Origin has scanned your computer and the damage has been done.

So, if someone from competitive dev team installs Origin, his confidential data could be captured by EA? Nice...

Mass Effect 1 and 2 are on Steam. Why can't EA just swallow their pride and abandon Origin? It already ruined Battlefield 3.

Can I borrow your time machine? You know, the one you used to go into the future and play ME3 MP?

It's not about pride, it's about conflicting views on DLC distribution. They're negotiating with Valve to get BF3 on Steam. I do agree that there could have been a better alternative to Origin to play BF3.

The amount of criticism Origin has received(all of it well earned indeed) is enough to show me that alot of people in EA are so prideful of it that they won't abandon it.

I find the whole service insulting, hence why I primarily use my 360. Unfortunately while I enjoy ME3 on my Xbox, SWTOR will require me to get Origin...which I'm still not sure if I want to pay them every month to let them scan my computer just to play the game I've been wanting since it was announced.

I'm not avoiding the PC version of ME3 and switching to the console version of ME3 because of DRM ... I'm doing it because Origin is a horrible, worthless piece of dog $#!%.

I don't care about DRM. I care about the fact that Origin doesn't work and it has horrible support (even WORSE than Steam support ... and Steam support isn't "great" by any means).

If BioWare confirms the boxed PC version of ME3 works WITHOUT installing Origin then I'll buy a boxed version of the game for my PC.

I'd still prefer to get the game on Steam, but I'll  "settle" for playing the PC version of ME3 using the discs from the box "if" it means that I don't have Origin shoved down my throat like an old man's moldy ****.

For now, I'm only buying the Xbox version of ME3 until BioWare and EA officially announce that Origin is NOT required.

No, it won't.  They've said so, flat-out.  You only need Origin if you want to buy digital, and then only for as long as it takes to download and install.

I would really -love- to pre-order the CE! Great video of the virtual unboxing. Got me all excited. heh.

C'mon Bioware! A yes or no wouldn't kill you would it? Will ME3 require Origin?
