Pretty much as it sounds, I've only just started playing DA2 today again and have not touched the game since it's release. Whenever cutscenes occur now, unless the cutscene is purposefully skipped using ESC, the game will freeze and after a 5 minute interval, crash. There is no set cutsenes that it will crash at, it is purely by chance as far as I have noticed.

DA2 copy is a physical copy of the Signature Edition, updated to 1.03 last night with all DLC from SE installed, and Legacy and MotA DLC installed.

Windows Vista
3.00 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo
3.5 Useable RAM (RAM is actually at 4GBs)
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450
DirectX 11

Drivers are all updated as well. Please help, this a game breaking bug for me, as I do like the experience of the cutscenes.

Did you try rolling back your graphics drivers to a slightly older one? Just to rule out it being an issue with one particular driver.

The only other thing i'd suggest at this stage without a bit more information on what the error you are getting when it crashes is would be to do the time consuming uninstalling of everything (you won't lose saves) and then installing the game and patch and testing to see if it works then install the SE DLC and see if it works and then Legacy see if it still works and then MotA to rule out it being anything DLC file related.

I'm experiencing the same thing. Experienced it on my first play through when the game was released. And now decided to do a second play through because of the DLC's.

This has been a common and known problem from day one, and I'm surprised that this problem still exists.

Yet the same solution/fix still applies....run the game in DX9.

Mostly, it's a Geforce thing. Without a normal, standard problem report, your "Me, Too" comment is meaningless, of course.

st612 seems to be thinking of a different problem. DX11 mode causing 30 second freezes but in those cases there usually wasn't crashing involved. This issue has been mostly solved with patching and driver updates for GPU's.

In the case of the OP i imagine a different set of drivers would likely fix things anyways but i don't know which drivers they are using since they never specified.

I'm having a similar problem, the game freezes and crashes after a few minutes of gameplay. My FPS is very high and there are absolutely no precursor signs that something is wrong. The music and ambiant sound effect are still running when this happens but the image eventually disappears (black screen) and the mouse cursor freezes (but is still visible with the DA2 skin even over the black screen). I have to do a hard reboot to get out of this. I cannot Alt tab out or Ctrl Alt Delete out.

It was not limited to cutscenes however since it crashed during combat at least once with the exact same circumstances.

I'm running Win7 x64,
3.20 GHz Intel Core i7 960
ATI HD 5870 in crossfire (driver version 11.9).
6G Ram
DirectX 11

Thanks for the suggestion; I was going to try that but I need 11.9 to test a game (11.8 doesn't work with said game). I've rolled back to DirectX 9 and it fixed everything for me, no more crashes, but not so beautiful graphics.

Not sure if it's actually DX11 that causes the problem or only one of the feature it enable. Since it causes such a dramatic effect on my computer, I'm not really willing to test which.

No, it wasn't mostly a Geforce thing.  I have an ATI card and had the problem since day one.  The problem is still current and still persists, there is no need for me to report the problem again, when many already have with no permanent solution provided yet.

But now that I think about it, Moondoggie is correct, when I originally played the game, I would get the pausing in the cutscene, but not the crashing.  Now with this second playthrough I'm doing....it now crashes.

And thanks to Tyrium for your driver rollback solution.  I did update my graphics drivers to 11.9 right before I started my second playthrough.  Will roll back to 11.8.

In the exact same situation, need 11.9 drivers to test (probably) the same game.  Can't figure out why dx11 worked before, but doesn't now.  Hopefully someone (BW, ATI, someone) puts out a fix for this sometime...dx9 looks icky =(

my setup is nearly identical to fred's, too.

seems we all have the HD 5800 series cards.
