When it comes to romances in ME2, it seems that the romanceable NPCs don't want to talk about anything but romance once you get to the point. Now, how to romance the character you want to is easy to figure out.

But how do you gently let the others down? If I don't want to romance Jack, but still want to be a friend (and maybe help her regain some mental stability), it feels a bit cruel to just break off the romance (and god knows what biotically charged grudge Jack, or Miranda, could reserve for me in ME3. They both seem to be the grudge-holding type...).

With Miranda, it seems to be easy - just don't choose the "I want to admire you" line, and she keeps the relationship friendly. Tali and Jack... not so. At least, I can't fine a way to let them down gently.

Any suggestions?

Take the responses in the middle of the dialogue wheel, not the top. Works for me.

short answer is as above.

you can't be too gentle, that's the trap everyone's fallen into when they complain about not understanding how they're suddenly in a romance. you can't muck around with them, tell them you're not keen right from the start and if you're sketchy about outcomes then be a bastard about it. most people are worried about loyalty ramifications but i haven't come across any so far, doesn't seem to have any effect at all.
