I just took Bethany with me into the new DLC. Cut to Hawke, Tallis and the other companion arriving at the chateau. As soon as I get to speak to the Duke he says something along the lines of "Oh look at that. Another Hawke! How funny! I already have one here."

Am I the only one who is irritated why Bethany is at the party? Is it the same for Carver?

I maybe could understand it if they are Grey Wardens, but as Circle Mage or Templar? They don't even seem to have an escort. Why exactly should the Circle/the Templar Order send them to some orlesian hunting party?

Or should I just take it as some sort of "Your brother/sister normally couldn't be here, but they are anyway. Don't ask any questions" handwave?

Personally I think they should have had the Circle/Templar sibling arrive with you because they seem like the they are in a situation that would be easier for Hawke to ask them to come with them to the Chateau.

Why does it matter? Stupid thing to get irritated at. Use your imagination, and stop nitpicking.

This is what I wrote from my review

I had no explanation for the presence of Bethany, or I need someone who can tell me, because I heard absolutely nothing.

She is there, that's all. Not even an explanation from her or the Duke. "Oh my brother." When she sees me. That's all. And Prosper, says to me, another Amell is here, a warden, wow, but he doesn't explain me why she's at the party. Yes, why a warden, alone would be there ? At a party ?

Also question : , where do come from the mages in the dlc? There is no circle of mages in theses montains, no Templars to watch them, no chantry. we are in the middle of nowhere. They were free ? Apostate ?

So it seems they didn"t work on it.

Oh... okay. I'll go with the "Your brother/sister normally couldn't be here, but they are anyway. Don't ask any questions" handwave then.

Wynne seemed free to run off and do whatever she pleased, without Templar escort. Bethany seems pretty "well behaved" when she's in the Circle. I mean heck, she's the ONLY mage in Kirkwall who isn't a bloodmage. That's gotta win her something, like some leave to go to the party. As for Carver, maybe he'd earned a few days of vacation to "go train" or "hunt mages" in wyvern infested mountains? Use your imagination.

I seem to recall a dev post saying that Orlesians like having Mages at their parties.

This Duke fellow probably has quite a bit of pull with the Chantry.

It does say he's an extremely close personal friend of the Empress of Orlais, and Orlais is the center of the entire Chantry system.

I thought about those possibilities and they made sense for a Templar Carver, but not for a Circle Bethany in my opinion. We are talking about the Kirkwall circle here. If Bethany would be in the circle of Ferelden I would have no problem beliving it. But in Kirkwall? Especially if I play the DLC in act 3?
Meredith doesn't seem like the Knight Commander who would let her mages go anywhere in the city unattended, let alone to some party in the middle of nowhere, even before she goes into full blown tyrant mode in act 3.

I couldn't use my sibling in the DLC, they remained greyed out.

Are they dead in your game?

You can't take them to the meeting with Tallis at the High Town market. As soon as you're asked to select you party to set off to Chateau Haine, the sibling is available. Maybe you missed it, like I did on my first playthrough :)

It makes more sense if they're Wardens. Bethany because of her love for fancy noble things and Carver because... I don't know, elf fetish?

Ah, maybe that was it.. I probably assumed she was still unavailable the 2nd pass.

I agree with the OP. It just doesn't seem like Bethany. Especially CIRCLE Bethany.

Also. I feel the need to chime in that once again, as with 'Legacy', this DLC is proof that Carver is infinately more awesome than Bethany. Is Bethany's new snarkiness toward my Hawke an attempt to make her interesting? Because she's always really liked me before (which, I know, I complain that the fact that she's agreeable makes her boring, but now I complain that she's newly crabby at me). Maybe Carver has a different writer than Bethany and just gets better lines? I don't know.

I didn't find her snarky. Her "nice to see you" didn't feel as... sincere as I expected, I admit, but it came across as more, idk, distracted maybe, than anything. She didn't seem curt or pissed off the way she does during the Qunari crisis, or even friendly but snotty like Carver was (lol "maybe I should join the Qun").

The total lack of explanation for her being there was sixteen kinds of weak, though. Easy enough for me to handwave if she's Circled and it's Act II - you can use the console to unlock her then anyway and figure she's allowed to dick around Kirkwall Wynne/Finn style due to good behavior - but Wardened or Act III Circled it's... not so easy.

I don't mind it as the price of having her around, though. Probably the single worst writing choice in a game full of bad writing choices, IMO, was stripping off both siblings by the end of Act I, and if they're willing to try to rectify that a little I'm willing to overlook any clumsiness it requires of them.

Well for Templar Carver you could say he was sent to investigate rumors of mages at Chateau Haine because there were a few of them in the fight with the Chasind Guard (can't remember his name)
