Why we have to debate on longer hair here, Bioware just did a masterpiece which took over 5 years of creation and we stop at " We want longer hair? " Ive seen some static longer hair in NWN, okay its an old game but it was crappy the second the head was moving or yawning, the hair poking out of the tummy..wow talk about realism here, anybody here wants to wait afew other months to have longer realistic hair if its possible for programmers to really think of the hair flow, dangle, with the character walking, running, the wind speed and yet some wants to call Bioware as fools. God..can we just enjoy this game without pointing out useless details? Like it been said, long hair aint good in combat and we created ladies going to battle against monsters not enjoying the 4 o'clock tea!!

Proper animations for every hairstyle that isn't cut short or tightly pinned would definitely not be something that could be whipped up in "maybe a day". Running, spinning, jumping, turning the head, looking up or down -- that's just off the top of my head. And the longer the hair, the more work it'd need to prevent clipping in any of these moves.

Plus, long open hair (and I find the existing shoulder-length styles to be plenty long, actually) is impractical for someone living the harsh and brutal adventuring life. It can snag in all sorts of crap including your own armor, it can get in the way and distract you at important moments, enemies can grab it to throw you off balance, subdue you or even break your neck ...

(Of course, the "realism" argument doesn't always apply in games. The default "armor" for human noble warriors -- if female -- just begs for crippling or killing blows to the exposed chest and neck areas. *rolls eyes*)

It may be a RP thing where women with long hair in combat would get it chopped off or tangled in something such that it kills them.

I enjoy posts like this from people who obviously have zero experience with software.

Coding realistic physics for long hair would maybe be a day of work?

Professional computer modellers work weeks to make hair look good in cutscenes.  To add real physics for hair would easily be a month of engineering and probably the same amount or more in QA.  And even then, the result would look cheesy at best on consumer hardware.

Make no mistake: there is no long hair in the game because it takes far too long to make long hair look even acceptable in game.

Sims 3 has "long" hair, but apparently people were complaining it wasn't long enough there as well.

Are people roleplaying Rapunzel?

I'd like at least a longish braid like the male elves get for females.Or a longer ponytail.

When i read the comments that i was not aware of what im typing.. I did some research..

I never expected that it was THAT difficult to get the physx right.. So sorry..

But anyway.. Itl can cost some time.. But im looking forward that a modder creates long hair with animations.. Hopefully..

Throwing my two cents in here.
BioWare plus women's hair equals sad face.
Seriously... in ME and DA:O, only a few of the hairstyles I can tolerate looking at, let alone like.
I think they need to have some more hair options, and some different styles. Like... ugh. I don't care if the hair is long or short, just give me some better hair.

I understand long hair and cloaks create all sorts of clipping issues that take ages to work around, but please, BioWare, if you don't give us long hair and cloaks, at least stop tormenting us with art work of your game featuring people with long hair and cloaks.
I saw the official wallpapers for the various origins the other day and wept a little inside.

I have to agree with Helena. Although, really, I'd be happy with long hair and cloaks that clip. Bioware, unfortunately, is too professional to give us stuff that clips. I say that with affection. <3

It will be modded in, give it time.

Well aside from all the technical reasons, It could also be because of the helmet, since your hair goes underneath the helmet, if your character would have hair coming out were it long hair, so in order to simplify things they only have short hair, that's just my opinion tho

Based on a totally different engine, so this might not be a good comparison; however, if you are interested, check out the MMORPG Aion's hairstyles. It offers a wide variety of hairs, and they seem to work just fine in all situations. (Doesn't seem like they are all rigged to the bones either) Jumping, running, or standing on moving platforms makes the hair flow in a natural direction. So it IS possible, although I'm not exactly sure how Aion's dev team managed to pull that off.

Not to mention that they have the absolutely best character customization option that I've seen in games so far :P

I sympathize with the girls who want longer hair, I for one would like my characters to have a long braid like Nynaeve al'Meara or long flowing golden hair on a female elf like Laurana from Dragonlance. Most of the characters in famous fantasy novels have long hair.

Heh, when it comes to the debate about long hair and how realistic it is, I think of the Manchu queue (the long 'rat-tail' braid that all males in pre-1900s Qing China were made to wear under pain of death). I have no idea how well they fought during battles as a result, but if you watch those old kungfu movies for inspiration, the warriors often wrap the queues around their necks before fighting so that said hair doesn't get in the way (makes sense to me). Of course, long hair is a pain to keep in general, so folks who have commented about the impracticality have a strong point IMHO.

But as others have said, the more practical and immediate reason as to why there's no long hair in DA:O - clipping issues. You probably would've gotten away with them in NWN1, where realism was less of a priority and could be visually ignored, but the anomaly would stick out like a sore thumb in the 3-D world of DA:O. Too bad.

I agree, or a THICKER ponytail.

The ponytails available are really thin/greasy/icky looking...and wtf is up with the 'v' neck hairline thing?

Lame.

Why only females? That seems a bit sexist to me... There should be longer hair for all characters. Also, long hair does not really affect combat and walking, because tying it solves that problem.

or our DAO heros are so good that they can "PWN" enemies even with long hair causing problems :D

nothing wrong with winning and looking good while doing it

and to me it is better to die looking good/cool too

I believe the male braided ponytail moves...

I think if they can work on getting a creatures hair (like the Lady of the Lake/Dryad) hairstyle to have physics/move with the body, then they can work on some longer hairstyles for the PC, but it is time consuming to animate everything.

It wouldn’t bother me much if it clipped a little, but if the hair was plastered on the head with no movement then I suppose it would be weird
