Hail, friends!

My apologies for my past indiscretions. 'Tis not unsurprising given that I have ran afoul of a Nur’arakos! The undead beast unleashed with a full 1d8+5 plus charisma drain attack that left your fellow adventurer a little on the sore side.

I languished in that beast's lair for sometime till I recalled the potion of restoration I had secreted away whilst browsing a nearby merchant's wares. Now, as I sit in the tavern quaffing suzale, I do see that my past comments have been delivered with the bluntness akin to a mace +4 being wielded with the tact of a hungry ogrillon.

What I should have said was that the NWN2 community is undead. Like a powerful lich. Nae, a baelnorn! A creature of such power, the sight of which makes this humble adventurer gladdened to have packed a change of pantaloon. Let it be known once and for all that you truly have my respect and admiration.

Yours in adventure,
EE

Epic projects?

Dead community?

Pissy members?

I think there has been a bit of an up spike in activity recently. new names are appearing. Granted not all of us are posting on a regular basis but we are here, keeping our eyes on what is going on. We like to have conversations offer each other ideas and help, as well as offer constructive criticism. Grand proclamations like the "community is dead" is not productive.

If you feel it has run it course and you desire to move on then do so. But, you don't need to condemn the rest of us who still enjoy this as hanging onto a dead idea.

Let us not be Eric Cartman

People still play this game, and download content.

If you want to use the toolset, you still can and people will play it.  If you want to play new mods, they're still being produced.

But, if what you're interested in is having a massive download count on what you do, you missed the boat by a few years.  Having a massive download count on a mod isn't that much fun anyway.

Indeed! All this talk of download count and I am reminded of one such tale that I would gladly share.

The Count of Download was a minor noble charged with auditing King IGN's vault. Within a tenday of commencing work it was discovered that he had in fact performed a full audit on all three of the King's daughters instead!

At the time I was an aspiring bard who had just learned of his red dragon disciple heritage. This came as somewhat of a relief as it went someway to explaining my odd penchant for kobolds. With my new found prowess I decided to bring the scoundrel to justice.

After several unpleasant encounters with swamp rats and one pleasant encounter with a small band of fine looking kobolds, I tracked Count Download down and gave him to the count of five to surrender else I deliver the load from my crossbow and bring the Count down. How did it end, you ask? I took a bribe and his short sword as evidence, returned and collected my reward and the Count counted his lucky stars as he fled Download!

Onwards to adventure!

This thread is actually hilarious. I'm not making a module, but if I were, I would be doing it first and foremost for my personal enjoyment as a hobby.

that's it! imo eguinter is bitter because of the low download counts of his own mod. he wished for thousands and got only a handful. that's the only message in this thread -.-

besides the da:o toolset ain't more difficult nor complex than nwn2's toolset. in fact it's very similar in handling. it's the limited monster count, the bad support, the ****ty lighting renderer and the tons of bugs which almost killed the modding community so fast...

By Umberlee! You need not remind me of the time I spent stranded on those shores. The sand has a way of penetrating the deepest crevice and I spent the entire following Year of the Tankard trying to clean it out of my bag of holding. What's more, my rapier had a +3 enchantment with 1d6 acid damage and it still rusted!

I'm not a builder, but I always check this forum to see what's in the works, just as I check the Vault to see what's available. It seems to me there are only three reasons for undertaking something as complicated and time-consuming as building a NWN2 module: for fun, to make money and because someone ordered you to. Two the three don't apply.

You guys keep making them and I'll keep playing them. Thank you.

Yeah well the community is not massively active, but hey. Personally I don't really give a damn about how many modules are being procuded, etc, it's not like I have the time to play them all. In fact I'd rather there were only a few, high-quality epics in some ways. Though I haven't been doing so much recently, I spend my NWN2 time building and if I ever finished my epic campaign, then where would I be, huh? I'd have to start a new one, and cool as that would be, I'd just be in exactly the same position as before (albeit with a successful release under my belt).

Incidentally, if we are looking at activity stats and stuff, I always find it interesting to note the BG No-Reload Challenge, amongst other threads, which at the time of writing has reached 128 pages (admittedly they like to post a lot of screenshots there, but that's a hell of a lot). The BG2 one has reached 100 pages and it's the 25th such thread. This all in a game older than NWN(2), with a 2D graphics engine, 2nd Ed rules, and no toolset. It makes one think, that's all.

Wow, this is attracting people I hadn't seen for years. Next time I want to make a request for a module patch or something, I'll hide it behind a "this game is dead" thread.

Chiming in from the unproductive consumer corner.

I am here but kinda silent for the moment. My recent and disastrous move, the death of my car, the death of my gaming rig and the shaky status of my job have made things a tad difficult.

As Always, I appreciate the modders and their tireless work. It just may be a bit until I can really be active here again.

Edit: Also, holy ****. Dirtywick. Good to see you around again.

Edit 2: ANd Tsongo. At first I missed he was back because I mistook him for Kamal based on avatar.

Also this thread has been up for not even a day and it's got nearly two whole pages, which considering it's not really about anything, is not too bad for a dead community.

Equintir Eligtard.. I've just read your blog and as a " fan kiddie " I feel that all of this fuss is just about you not getting enough downloads on your module. You should just be happy that you made it, released it and people enjoyed it that's what really matters.

However I would like to point out that before you go telling the world to avoid NWN2 you should get your facts straight. The idea that modules in the top ten get 2 to 3 downloads per month is more fantasy than this game itself ask Kamal your "pissy" friend for an example.

Also the statement that "everyone" who released a mod that took over a year to create has given up modding is total rubbish. Serene took me a year and a half, I've made another big one since, The Last of the Danaan certainly wasn't, The Caravan Club has grown into a massive trailer park, Rumour has it there's a shadow thief in Crimmor following an Evil path and Conan's still writing his chronicles to name but a few.

. Tsongo..

It's rather amusing, the only reason I knew about that is that I am one of the followers of the blog so I received a notification of the new post.

Path of Evil took a bit over two years. After release I started on Crimmor. I'd finished a version of Crimmor in about a month (Arkazleth and NTB even playtested it), it was even mostly releasable. But then i decided i wanted to expand it greatly because I liked the setting. Im perfectly aware it won't get tons of downloads since a solo single class module with no fighting required is a niche module to begin with. Crimmor should see release in the next six months hopefully (I've already played one path through it to completion in testing). So that would be multiple projects of longer than a year. I've got ideas for after that, but a backlog of adventuring of my own to do.

And let's not forget virtually every PW that has launched (and many that never did) has more than a person year behind it on launch date. And those generally see continuing work happening on them after launch, resulting in even more person years. I wouldn't be surprised to see double digit person years behind some.

If I weren't helping run a PW already, I'd start a module. It's just a lot of fun with all the things you can do and all the things I've learned over the past few years have made it even more so. I've had some ideas over the past year for making one that almost make me wish I had the time (and ambition) to start it up, but I know that would be a bit too much of a stretch for me. But someday, maybe, if the PW is pretty much complete and only needs occasional updates.... then I might see what I can do. There will probably be less people around then, but I bet I could get all the other module builders to try it out.

if his module had the download count of path of evil, then he wouldn't be so bitter about it i think.

So Kamal, after Crimmor, a follow up to path of evil ?

My own observations:

Dead no, shrinking, yes. That's inevitable for any community as it ages. Furthermore it is worsened by being hampered by a loss of the prior forums (a major source google link-driving) excessive spamming by bots on the vault, and a reduction of new content being posted on the vault.

I watch and read the posts on the forums here with enough frequency, but I rarely post anymore. Why? Because a lot of it is the same stuff being repeated: Whats my best build for X? Whats wrong with my login? What mod am I working on? Who quit? Why Neverwinter sucks. Why Neverwinter doesnt suck, and of course "Is this community Dead?" It's been getting old, and not really much I care to add to that.

As for moderators, I just had some good BBQ w/ dunniteowl in Austin this week. he told me his life was quite disrupted by the massive wildfires that we have had here in central Texas, and on top of that has a busted computer. I'll let him go into further detail as he wishes. SO that explains one moderator. I don't know about any of the others.

There is lots of mods I wish I had the time to download and play. But my free time is directed toward the mod I do want to make. Despite the fact that I know its late in the game, I'm not making mine to get high downloads. I doing it to point it out of a resume as something to show for the gaming industry, and as a practice run for future non-NWN2 projects.

On the one hand my mod is the last thing I am gong to be doing for NWN2, but its gonna take a while. On the other hand, my next project after completing it going to be an attempt at NWN2's successor.

So...well what should I say? words seems insufficient so...

*blows a big raspberry at the thread*

Exactly so, check out the red line ... how's that for a path of evil Image IPB

Kamal_'s mod has kicked the pants out fo the download rate since it came out. Tsongo is doing well too.

There's life in the old game yet perhaps.

PJ

PS: Anyone who thinks collecting the download count of twenty plus mods every week and putting them on a graph is a little odd ... well that's me Image IPB
