It will be good to have another builder as well.
This list gives you all modules by level and, to some degree, function but not what you are looking for. You're best bet is to post a specific request (we have had some very specific requests here, better to allow some flexibiltiy) on this forum and let some of the players here quide you.
If you want a wizard mod then a very good one is The Wizards Apprentice by Matthew Reider.
Again welcome, hope to see lots of your posts,
PJ

Hello all, 1st post here. I just bought this game myself. I have played the first one for a couple years, and finally decided to get this game. Not because of the following of this game, but because I love role playing games. I remember the days of pen&paper dice games. I played many, and loved to be a dungeon master as well as a player. But then we were lucky to get one or two other people that liked to play. So I will be happy just to play a few people's mods, as well create a few myself that a few people can enjoy. This is the stage of the game where the game becomes a "cult classic" and is held as a gem to those who loved this sort of thing for years already, and the ability to play it with others via the internet.
Anyhow hope to get to know you all during my stay here. Can anyone point me towards a list of mods catagorized by genre? for instance if I wanted to play some thief mods, villan mods, wizard mods, etc etc...
Welcome aboard.
The following are the specialty mods that I can think of off the top of my head:
Villain Mod: Path of Evil
Thief Mod: Shadow Thief Crimmor (still in development, but will be released. Kamal has been working on it for awhile)
Ranger Mods: Last of the Danaan, Danaan Unvanquished, From this Comes Strength (to be released in 2012)
Cleric Mod: Maimed God Saga
Wizard Mod: The Wizard's Apprentice, The Wizard's Apprentice II (to be released late 2011/early 2012).
You can download them from NWVault.com.
Any of these titles will be worth your while. There are also many other excellent titles. Check the top 15 list on NWVault.com. Also check the Hall of Fame mods. These are the best that have been made so far.
For building I recommend the toolset notes by RJShae. There are other helpful little publications too that I can't think of right now. If you wan to do scripting, try Knightmare's Scripting for Noobs or NWN2Scripting.com. The NWNLexicon (the functions work for NWN2 as well) is also helpful. Good luck and if you get into trouble, post here and someone will help you out.

I would love to see builders make short well polished adventures that can be completed in one sitting.
I agree. One of the reasons I started my mini-module series was because I wanted to build something with a high level of polish that could actually be finished.

As far as guides to the toolset are concerned, the one that got me past the major issues of working out how to do the simplest things was the Hitchiker's Guide to the Toolset - you'll find it on the vault. Its simply written and covers everything that someone new to the toolset needs to know to get things moving and create simple adventures. Then the other guides mentioned above are great for helping answer all the "How do you do X, Y & Z?" questions that come up next.

I'm working on just such a thing, which will be uploaded when I can finally get this pesky last script sorted. As well as being a little piece of history, The Lichway is just long enough to last an evening's play (breaks out the polishing cloth ready for another session with the scripting tutorials...

Best thing a new builder can do is start small. Make a couple prefabs, learn from community feedback, and continue with more. Frankly, I hated the NWN2 toolset when I first opened it. After the initial freak outs I got better...now I can't seem to put it down.
Yeah. It was a slow start for me too. I started off with a fairly short module with no companions and minimal dialogue and plot. It was a good start to get my feet wet for a bigger project. Just remember that anything you do will probably take you 3-4 times longer than you think it will, but its no big deal because making stuff is really fun.

*(For the sake of factual accuracy, I was a newb about 6 years ago on the NWN boards, asking how to make a start at learning what to do. I opened the NWN toolset back then, (October of 2004 it might have been now that I think) and nearly cried real tears of frustration so hopelessly clueless I was.
Since that time, I have become a moderator, I run and admin (as co-admin) the NeverWinter Citadel Project (see my siggy) as well as can even now open the NWN2 toolset and feel confident that most of what I set out to do, technically, I can actually do.)
The best part of this place is the people (now zombies, I guess) that populate it. If it weren't for the super helpful, cool, and downright fun folks here on these boards (and the NWN boards, too) I would never have stayed and felt so welcome. So welcome to you new guys. Be cool, hang in there and just remember, these people are my friends, even though I've only met one of them in person. And believe me when I tell you, they are some of the best friends you can ever hope to have.
Once again, Deadnightowl wishes you a warm welcome and bids you stay.

It's a thing about forums, it take someone to post a topic like "the community is dead" for you to realize just how active the community really is. .
I was thinking the same thing.. I was really worried that since I came into the game so late that the NWN2 community would be completly dead. Looks like alot of life still in this ol gal...lol

And since with the toolset it is not just a game, but a game platform, it has potentially limitless life as it continues to attract new people -- both those who enjoy building things, and those who enjoy playing new content.
If there ever is a truly worthy successor, that may change. I don't foresee that happening soon.

I think that the fact that there is no worthy successor is sufficient on its own to belie any doomsaying at this time. I expect there are others like me who discover it late, and embrace it because we like this particular kind of game -- a kind which is not currently being made elsewhere.

I agree. NWN1 and 2 fill a niche of moddable DND computer games. Until something else fills that niche then anyone who wants to play DND on the computer has to come here... unless neverwinter or DND online or those can fill the niche, but I really just don't think they will have the same flavor as the custom mods in NWN1 and 2. Plus there is nowhere else to build for DND on the computer.
